Every U.S. passport application is assigned a nine-digit locator number that identifies your file inside the State Department’s system. The quickest way to find your passport application locator number is through the Online Passport Status System at passportstatus.state.gov, which displays the number once your application has been entered into the federal database.1U.S. Department of State. Checking Your Passport Application Status The first two digits tell you which passport agency or processing center has your file, and the remaining digits identify the application itself.
How to Retrieve the Number
To pull up your record on the status portal, enter your last name (including any suffix such as Jr. or III), your date of birth, and the last four digits of your Social Security number.2U.S. Department of State. U.S. Passport Application Status Once the system finds your application, it displays the nine-digit locator number along with your current processing status.
Some applicants also spot the number on their acceptance facility receipt or on a canceled check after the State Department processes payment, but the status portal is the only method the State Department itself recommends.1U.S. Department of State. Checking Your Passport Application Status If you applied through the online renewal system, your locator number will begin with 96, which distinguishes it from applications submitted by mail or at an acceptance facility.
What the First Two Digits Mean
The prefix identifies where your application landed.1U.S. Department of State. Checking Your Passport Application Status That matters because the large processing centers handle bulk mail-in renewals on routine timelines, while regional passport agencies mostly serve applicants with in-person appointments for urgent travel.

Using the Number to Track Your Application
You don’t actually need the locator number to check status. The Online Passport Status System accepts the same three pieces of information used to retrieve the number in the first place: last name, date of birth, and last four digits of your Social Security number.2U.S. Department of State. U.S. Passport Application Status If you included an email address on your application, you’ll also receive automatic status updates as your file moves through each stage.
The statuses the portal displays:
- In Process. Your application is under review at a passport agency or center.
- Additional Information Needed. The State Department has sent a letter or email requesting more documentation. Your application is on hold, and you have 90 days from the date on that letter to respond.1U.S. Department of State. Checking Your Passport Application Status
- Information Received, In Process Again. You’ve sent the requested documents and your application is back under review. Processing may run longer than normal because of the hold.
- Approved. Review is complete and your passport is being printed.
- Passport Mailed. Your completed passport is on its way to the address on your application.
When status changes to “Passport Mailed,” the State Department sends a USPS tracking number to the email address on your application. That email is the only place the tracking number appears; it isn’t shown on the status portal.1U.S. Department of State. Checking Your Passport Application Status
When the Portal Shows Nothing Yet
Almost everyone hits this. You apply, wait a few days, check the system, and get nothing back. That’s normal. It can take up to two weeks from the day you apply before your application shows as “In Process.”1U.S. Department of State. Checking Your Passport Application Status During that window, your package moves through a mail sorting facility, then to an intake center where payment is processed, and finally to a passport agency or center for review. Even if USPS tracking reads “delivered,” that only means the package reached the sorting facility. The State Department doesn’t have it in the system yet.
The clearest signal your application has actually arrived is your payment being taken. When your check is cashed or your card is charged, the processing clock has started. If two weeks have passed and payment still hasn’t been processed, the State Department most likely hasn’t received your application. Check your USPS tracking number and contact USPS to locate the package. If you applied at an acceptance facility such as a post office or clerk’s office, contact that facility directly to confirm they sent it.1U.S. Department of State. If payment cleared but there’s still no status two weeks later, there may be a data entry error on your application. Common culprits are misspelled names, missing suffixes, and hyphens entered inconsistently. Call the National Passport Information Center at 1-877-487-2778 to sort it out.1U.S. Department of State. If You Lose Your Locator Number
Losing the number isn’t a problem. Check status by entering your last name, date of birth, and last four digits of your Social Security number, and the portal will show the number again alongside your current status.1U.S. Department of State. Checking Your Passport Application Status The number is useful for identifying which facility has your file, but it isn’t required to track progress.
If the portal still can’t find you, try variations of your name: with and without hyphens, with or without suffixes. When that fails, call the National Passport Information Center. Representatives can look up your application using your name and date of birth and help resolve whatever is blocking the search.3U.S. Department of State. Contact U.S. Passports
