Parental leave in France lets either parent pause work or move to part-time for up to three years after a child is born or adopted, provided they have at least one year of service with the same employer. The leave itself is unpaid, but the Caisse d’Allocations Familiales (CAF) pays a monthly allowance called the PreParE, worth up to €459.70 in 2025. Both parents have the same right to take it, and a qualifying employer cannot refuse.
Who Can Take It
Any private-sector employee with at least twelve months of continuous service at the same company qualifies. The clock is measured on the child’s date of birth or, for adoptions, the day the child joins the household.1Légifrance. France Code du travail L1225-47 – Congé Parental d’Éducation et Passage à Temps Partiel Adopted children must be under sixteen at arrival.
If you meet the seniority threshold, your employer has no legal grounds to refuse. The right applies equally to both parents regardless of gender or marital status. Fall short of twelve months and the employer can turn you down, so check your start date before you file.
How Long the Leave Runs
Leave opens with an initial period of up to one year and can be renewed. Total duration depends on the family situation.2Code du travail numérique. Le Congé Parental d’Éducation
- One child: renewable twice, ending no later than the child’s third birthday.
- Twins: continues until the children enter école maternelle, typically around age three.
- Triplets or more: renewable up to five times, ending no later than the children’s sixth birthday.3Légifrance. France Code du travail – Congés d’Éducation des Enfants
For adoptions, the clock starts on the day the child arrives. If the adopted child is under three, leave can run for up to three years from arrival. If the child is over three but not yet at compulsory school age, leave is capped at one year from arrival.3Légifrance. France Code du travail – Congés d’Éducation des Enfants
Both parents can take parental leave for the same child, together or in sequence. The total time available to the family does not increase either way. For children born on or after January 1, 2015, PreParE is structured to encourage sharing rather than one parent taking the full period.
Full Leave or Reduced Hours
You can stop working entirely or shift to part-time. Under a full leave (congé total), your employment contract is suspended and your position is legally protected. Under part-time (activité à temps partiel), you keep working on a reduced schedule, with a floor of sixteen hours per week and a ceiling of 80% of the company’s standard full-time hours.1Légifrance. France Code du travail L1225-47 – Congé Parental d’Éducation et Passage à Temps Partiel
One point catches people out. Your employer cannot refuse the part-time arrangement itself, but they can push back on the specific schedule you propose. If you cannot agree on days or hours, the employer’s preferred distribution may prevail. Raise the schedule question in your initial notification letter to avoid delays.
What You Get Paid: PreParE
Parental leave is technically unpaid, but the CAF pays a monthly benefit called the Prestation Partagée d’Éducation de l’Enfant (PreParE) to offset lost wages.4Cleiss. The French Social Security System – Family Benefits The 2025 amount depends on how far you cut your hours:
- Full cessation of work: €459.70 per month.
- Part-time at 50% or less of full-time: €297.17 per month.
- Part-time between 50% and 80% of full-time: €171.42 per month.5Service-Public.fr. Prestation Partagée d’Éducation de l’Enfant (PreParE)
Both parents in a couple can receive PreParE at the same time if both reduce their work, but their combined payments cannot exceed €459.70 per month.5Service-Public.fr. Prestation Partagée d’Éducation de l’Enfant (PreParE)
PreParE also carries a minimum work-history requirement measured in validated old-age insurance quarters. The number of quarters needed, and the lookback window used to count them, depend on how many children you have; the window is roughly the last two years for a first child and longer for subsequent children. The CAF checks your record when you apply, so confirming your status with them before you file avoids surprises. The amounts are modest against a full salary, and while some employers top them up through collective agreements, that is not guaranteed.
How to Apply
Start with your employer. Written notice is required, and the timing depends on the sequence:
- If parental leave starts immediately after maternity or paternity leave: notify at least one month in advance.
- In every other case: notify two months before the intended start date.6Service Public. Parental Leave for Part-Time Education for a Private Sector Employee
Send the notification by registered mail with acknowledgment of receipt, or hand-deliver it against a signed receipt. State when the leave will begin, how long it will last, and whether you want full leave or part-time. If part-time, include the schedule you propose.
Then apply to your local CAF for PreParE, most easily through the online portal. You will need your social security number, proof of the child’s birth or adoption, and details of your partner’s professional status. Payments are not backdated to cover a gap caused by a late application, so file promptly.
Your Job When You Come Back
French law guarantees a return to your previous job or a comparable position with equivalent pay.7Service Public. Maternity Leave for a Private Sector Employee The leave cannot be used to demote you. You are also entitled to a salary increase reflecting the individual raises, or the average raises, given to employees in your professional category while you were away.
Your employer must also offer a professional interview after your return. It is not a performance review. The discussion covers training needs, career prospects, and your rights under the personal training account (CPF), and your employer must give you a written record of it. The requirement exists to keep parents from being sidelined after a long absence.
If Your Child Is Seriously Ill
Standard parental leave is for the period after birth or adoption when the child is well. A separate leave, the congé de présence parentale, covers parents caring for a child with a serious illness, disability, or the aftermath of a severe accident, and it operates under its own rules and its own medical certification.8Service-Public.fr. Congé de Présence Parentale du Salarié dans le Secteur Privé If that is your situation, the standard rules above are not the ones you need.
What Changes in 2026
The Social Security Financing Act for 2026 creates a new supplementary birth leave starting January 1, 2026. Each parent can choose one or two months, and both parents can take it at the same time or alternate.9Service Public. Maternity Leave in the Public Service It is separate from, and in addition to, maternity, paternity, and parental leave. As of early 2026 the implementing regulations that set out how the leave works and how it is compensated had not been issued, so the leave cannot be taken until those rules are finalized.
