An overnight payoff address is the street address a lender designates for courier-delivered loan payoffs, separate from the P.O. Box where regular monthly payments are mailed. You need it because FedEx, UPS, and DHL cannot deliver to a P.O. Box, and sending a cashier’s check by overnight courier is how borrowers close out a mortgage, auto loan, or other large debt without letting per diem interest accumulate through days of standard mail transit. The address appears on the payoff statement your lender is required to provide, and federal law gives mortgage servicers no more than seven business days to deliver an accurate one after a written request.1Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1639g – Requests for Payoff Amounts of Home Loan
Why the Overnight Address Is Different From the Payment Address
Loan servicers route monthly payments to a P.O. Box or a lockbox facility built for high-volume mail. That works for the Postal Service. It does not work for a courier, which needs a building with a dock or a front desk where a driver can obtain a signature. The overnight payoff address points to that physical location, often in a different city from the lockbox.
Sending an overnight package to the regular payment address is the most common mistake in this process. Couriers cannot deliver to a P.O. Box, so the package sits until someone sorts out where it should go, and interest keeps accruing the whole time. Even a single day of delay on a large mortgage balance can cost $50 to $200 in additional per diem interest. Confirm the overnight-specific address on your payoff statement before you ship anything, and use it exactly as printed, including any suite number, floor, or department code.
Getting Your Payoff Statement First
The payoff statement tells you what you owe to the penny as of a specific date. Request one through the lender’s online portal, by phone, or through the title company handling your closing. For mortgage loans, the servicer has up to seven business days to respond, though most are faster.2eCFR. 12 CFR 1026.36 – Prohibited Acts or Practices and Certain Requirements for Credit Secured by a Dwelling
The statement lists your principal balance, accrued interest, outstanding fees, and a per diem interest figure. That per diem number is your daily interest charge. Every day between the statement date and the day the lender actually receives your payment adds another per diem charge to what you owe.
The Good-Through Date
Every payoff statement includes a good-through date, the last day the quoted amount remains valid. Lenders build in a buffer to account for mail transit, so the quote may be good through ten or fifteen days from the statement date, with the per diem interest for those extra days already priced in. If your payment arrives before that date, you get a small refund for the unused days. If it arrives after, you owe more interest and may need a fresh statement.3Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. What Is a Payoff Amount and Is It the Same as My Current Balance
Give yourself cushion. Ask for a payoff amount good through a date five to seven days past when you plan to ship. If you’re closing on a house, the title company handles this timing precisely.
Consider a Wire Transfer Before You Ship
Before you package a check, check whether your lender accepts wire transfers. Many mortgage servicers do, and a wire removes the transit-time problem entirely. Funds sent before the lender’s cutoff (often around 5 or 6 PM Eastern) are received the same business day and credited immediately.
Wire instructions appear on the payoff statement or the lender’s website: routing number, account number, and reference fields for your loan number. Your bank will charge roughly $25 to $30 for a domestic wire. The receiving lender may add an incoming wire fee up to $25, though many waive it for payoffs. Overnight courier costs run $37 to $90 for an envelope depending on carrier and distance, so the total cost is comparable and the certainty is worth it for a high-stakes closing.
The tradeoff: wires are irreversible once accepted. Wiring to the wrong account or the wrong amount takes days or weeks to unwind. Verify every digit against the payoff statement before authorizing. Some borrowers call the lender to confirm the wire instructions verbally.
Preparing and Sending the Check
If a wire isn’t an option or you prefer a paper trail, the overnight check works reliably. Lenders almost always require guaranteed funds, meaning a cashier’s check or certified check rather than a personal check. A cashier’s check runs roughly $8 to $15 at most banks. Write your loan account number clearly on the memo line so the processing team can match the payment without guessing.
Place the check inside a secure envelope along with a copy of your payoff statement. That gives the receiving department everything it needs to credit your account on arrival. Fill out the courier’s label with the overnight payoff address exactly as printed, including any mail code. A missing suite or department line can route the package to the wrong desk inside a large servicer’s building and add a day or more to processing.
Cutoff Times and Cost
Every courier location has a daily cutoff for overnight shipments. FedEx cutoffs can be as early as mid-afternoon at retail locations and as late as early evening at hub locations.4FedEx. How to Ship a Package Overnight Call the drop-off point to confirm; missing the cutoff by a few minutes pushes delivery to the next business day and adds another day of per diem interest.
FedEx Standard Overnight for an envelope runs around $40. UPS Next Day Air starts near $37 for shorter distances and climbs above $80 coast to coast. Keep the tracking receipt. That tracking number is your only proof the package entered the system.
How Delivery Turns Into a Credited Payment
Tracking confirmation tells you the package arrived, but arrival and account crediting are not the same event. Under federal rules, servicers can set a daily cutoff for crediting mailed payments. A 5:00 PM cutoff at the servicer’s designated location falls within the regulatory safe harbor.5Consumer Compliance Outlook. Regulation Z Payment Crediting Rules for Open-End Credit, Credit Cards, and Closed-End Mortgage Payments A package arriving at 4:30 PM should credit that day. Arriving at 5:15 PM may push crediting to the next business day and cost you one more day of interest.
Once the payment clears internal verification, the lender zeros out your balance. For straightforward payoffs, that internal processing takes roughly two to five business days.6Freddie Mac. Payoff Process Pre- and Post-Securitization If you overpaid because your payment arrived before the good-through date, expect a small refund for the unused days, though it can take a few weeks.
Lien Release After the Balance Is Zero
Paying the balance is only half of the transaction. The lender still has a lien recorded against your property or vehicle title, and that record has to come off.
For a mortgage, the lender files a satisfaction of mortgage or a deed of reconveyance with the county recorder, publicly documenting that the debt is paid. Most states require this release within 30 to 60 days of full payment. Lenders that miss the deadline face financial penalties in many states, sometimes escalating with continued delay.
For a vehicle loan, the lender releases the lien on the title. In states with electronic lien systems, the release happens automatically through the motor vehicle department and a clean title arrives by mail. In paper-title states, the lender marks the title satisfied and mails it to you, and you may need to bring it to the motor vehicle office to update state records.
Either way, you should get written confirmation the debt is fully satisfied. If several weeks pass without documentation, contact the lender in writing. For mortgages, you can also check with the county recorder to see whether the satisfaction has been filed.
Getting Your Escrow Balance Back
If your mortgage included an escrow account for property taxes and insurance, there is almost certainly money left in it after payoff. Federal law requires the servicer to refund the remaining balance within 20 business days of receiving your payoff.7Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Timely Escrow Payments and Treatment of Escrow Account Balances You’ll also receive a short-year escrow statement within 60 days showing the final accounting.8Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. 1024.17 Escrow Accounts
Mark your calendar. If 20 business days pass with no refund, contact the servicer and reference the RESPA requirement. The CFPB treats a failure to refund within that window as a servicing error you can dispute formally in writing.9Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. If the Package Goes Missing
Overnight delivery is reliable, but packages do occasionally disappear. If tracking shows no delivery after two business days, ask the courier to open a trace and call the lender to explain. Interest keeps accruing while the payment is in limbo.
Replacing a lost cashier’s check is not like voiding a personal check. Your bank will likely require you to purchase an indemnity bond, essentially insurance protecting the bank if the original surfaces and someone tries to cash it. Even with the bond, banks often impose a waiting period of 30 to 90 days before issuing a replacement.10HelpWithMyBank.gov. I Purchased a Cashiers Check From the Bank and Then Lost It Interest accrues the whole time.
This is where a wire has a clear edge. An electronic payment cannot get lost on a truck. If your balance is large enough that a month or more of extra interest would sting, the wire fee is cheap protection.
