Origination Scan: Meaning, USPS Tracking, and Delivery Time

An origination scan on your passport tracking means the U.S. Postal Service has taken physical custody of your finished passport and scanned it into the mail network for the first time. It’s a USPS event, not a Department of State status, and it marks the start of the shipping leg. From this point, delivery usually takes one to three days if you paid for Priority Mail Express, or roughly a week to ten days by standard mail.

What the Scan Actually Tells You

The scan is logged when USPS receives and processes the envelope at its initial facility. Before that moment, your passport was in federal custody at a production center, already printed and verified. After the scan, responsibility shifts to the postal system. You’ll start seeing familiar tracking updates like “In Transit to Next Facility” and eventually “Out for Delivery.”

The origination scan itself is just the handoff. It doesn’t tell you where the package is going next or when it will arrive. It only confirms the passport is no longer sitting in a government building.

State Department Status vs. USPS Tracking

Two separate systems are involved, and they’re easy to mix up. The Department of State portal at passportstatus.state.gov shows application-level updates. The one that matters for shipping is “Passport Mailed,” which is when the State Department releases the tracking number by email to the address you gave on your application.1U.S. Department of State. The origination scan won’t appear on the State Department portal at all. To see it, click through to the USPS tracking link using the number in that email or in the portal itself. If you didn’t provide an email address, the portal is your only route to the tracking number, though you can add or update an email there.

Informed Delivery Can Show It First

If you have a free USPS Informed Delivery account, the passport shipment sometimes appears in the “Packages” section of your dashboard before the State Department email arrives. Users have reported seeing it listed under a description like “PASSPORT SERVICES/DOS TUCSON,” with a tracking link built in.

When Your Passport Should Arrive

Delivery timing after the origination scan depends on which shipping option you selected on your application.

  • Standard shipping generally arrives within about a week to ten days, varying by distance from the production facility and local mail conditions. The State Department does not publish a guaranteed window.
  • The optional $22.05 upgrade sends the passport by Priority Mail Express and should arrive within one to three days after the scan.2United States Postal Service. Passport Appointments, Renewals, and Photo Services

The delivery upgrade is separate from the $60 expedited processing fee, which speeds up the State Department’s review before the passport is ever printed. You can pay for one without the other.3U.S. Department of State. Passport Fees

Passport Cards and Documents Ship Separately

If you applied for both a passport book and a passport card, they won’t arrive together. The card always ships by First Class Mail regardless of what you paid for the book, so it usually arrives a week or two later. The origination scan you’re tracking is for the book. Your returned supporting documents, such as a birth certificate or naturalization certificate, also ship separately by First Class Mail.1U.S. Department of State. Changing the Address After the Scan

Once the origination scan has been recorded, the State Department can no longer change the delivery address. The label and routing are locked. Your only option at that point is USPS. The Package Intercept service can sometimes stop or redirect a shipment before final delivery, and your local post office may be able to help once the package reaches your area, though a fee may apply. Move quickly, because options narrow sharply once a delivery attempt is made.

If It Doesn’t Show Up

If tracking shows “Delivered” but the envelope isn’t there, check with household members and look around the delivery area first. Passport envelopes sometimes end up in unexpected places.

If the passport genuinely didn’t arrive, you have 120 days from the issue date to file Form DS-86, the Statement of Non-Receipt, and receive a replacement at no additional fee. Miss that window and you have to reapply from scratch and pay the full fees again.4U.S. Department of State. Form DS-86 Statement of Non-Receipt of a U.S. Passport

The State Department recommends waiting at least 14 days from the issue date before filing, to allow for normal mail delays. Before submitting the form, call the National Passport Information Center at 1-877-487-2778 to get the issue date, tracking number, and the name of the agency that issued your passport. You’ll mail the completed DS-86 with a photocopy of your government-issued photo ID to that specific agency.4U.S. Department of State. Form DS-86 Statement of Non-Receipt of a U.S. Passport

Filing DS-86 flags the missing passport as lost, which invalidates it permanently. If the original shows up later, don’t use it. Return it to the State Department.
