OPT photo requirements call for two identical 2-inch by 2-inch color passport-style photos, taken recently against a plain white or off-white background, showing your full face with a neutral expression and no glasses. The photos accompany Form I-765, and getting them wrong is one of the more common reasons applications stall.1U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Size, Color, and Print Quality
Prints must measure 2 inches by 2 inches (51 mm by 51 mm), in color, on thin paper with a glossy finish. Black-and-white photos are not accepted. Both prints must be identical, unmounted, and unretouched, meaning no filters, no skin smoothing, no color correction, and no digital editing of any kind.1U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Face, Framing, and Expression
Your face must appear in full frontal view, centered against a plain white or off-white background with no shadows, textures, or lines.3U.S. Department of State. Photo Requirements Head height, measured from the bottom of your chin to the top of your hair, should be between 1 inch and 1 3/8 inches (25 mm to 35 mm). Your eyes should sit between 1 1/8 and 1 3/8 inches from the bottom edge of the photo.1U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Form I-765 Instructions – Application for Employment Authorization
Keep a neutral expression. Both eyes open, mouth closed, head straight, looking directly at the camera. Even lighting across your face, no shadows. Smiling or squinting distorts the facial geometry that USCIS biometric software relies on and can produce a Request for Evidence.
Clothing, Glasses, and Head Coverings
Wear what you normally wear. The one clothing restriction is no uniforms or clothing that looks like a uniform. Religious garments worn daily are fine.3U.S. Department of State. Photo Requirements
Eyeglasses are not allowed, even if you wear them every day. The only exception is when they cannot be removed for medical reasons, such as after ocular surgery, and you’ll need a signed statement from a medical professional. Even then, the frames cannot cover your eyes or produce glare.3U.S. Department of State. Photo Requirements
Hats and head coverings are not permitted unless worn daily for religious reasons. The I-765 instructions describe this as headwear “required by your religious denomination.”1U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Form I-765 Instructions – Application for Employment Authorization If you wear one, your full face must remain visible from the hairline to the chin, and the covering cannot cast shadows.3U.S. Department of State. Photo Requirements Headphones, earbuds, and wireless devices are prohibited. Hearing aids and similar medical devices are acceptable.
Hair
Your hair does not need to be pulled back, but it cannot cover your face. Short bangs above the eyebrows are fine. Longer bangs that would block your eyes or eyebrows should be pinned back. If you wear your hair up, the full hairstyle needs to fit within the photo frame. The more of your face that shows, the fewer problems you’ll have.
How Recent the Photo Has to Be
The I-765 instructions say the photo must be “taken recently” without specifying a month count.1U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Form I-765 Instructions – Application for Employment Authorization The State Department standard for visa photos is within six months of filing.3U.S. Department of State. Photo Requirements Practically, the photo needs to look like you do now. If you’ve changed hair color, grown or shaved a beard, or otherwise significantly changed how you look, take a new one.
Paper Filing: Prints and Labels
Paper filings need two identical prints. On the back of each, lightly write your full name and A-Number (if you have one) in pencil or felt-tip pen.1U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Form I-765 Instructions – Application for Employment Authorization Ballpoint pens can leave indentations that show through to the image side. Do not staple the photos to the form; USCIS warns against heavy-duty staples in general.4U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Tips for Filing Forms by Mail Slip the prints into a small envelope or plastic bag to keep them safe in transit.
Online Filing: Uploading a Digital Photo
Filing online means uploading a digital image instead of mailing prints. USCIS says you can scan an existing passport-style print or take a new photo with your phone, using the highest resolution setting available.5U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Tips for Filing Forms Online Photographing a printed photo tends to degrade the image and is worth avoiding. Every composition rule still applies: white background, neutral expression, no glasses, no retouching.
If Your Photo Gets Rejected
A rejected photo is not something you fix by mailing a replacement. When USCIS flags a photo problem on an I-765, the typical response is a Request for Evidence directing you to an Application Support Center where a digital photo is taken on-site. Bring your appointment notice (Form I-797C) and a valid photo ID such as a passport or driver’s license. If you cannot make the date, reschedule through your USCIS online account at least 12 hours before the appointment; missing it without rescheduling can cause your application to be treated as abandoned and denied.6U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Preparing for Your Biometric Services Appointment That whole detour is avoidable, which is why the framing and background rules are worth checking twice before you submit.
