Ontario Tax Rebates: Credits, Eligibility, and How to Claim

Ontario tax rebates are a set of refundable and non-refundable credits that put money back in residents’ pockets through the annual tax return: the Ontario Trillium Benefit (which bundles the sales tax credit, energy and property tax credit, and Northern Ontario energy credit), the Ontario Child Benefit, the Ontario Seniors Care at Home Tax Credit, the Ontario Senior Homeowners’ Property Tax Grant, and the Low-Income Workers Tax Credit (LIFT). The Canada Revenue Agency administers all of them. You do not file separate provincial applications; you file your federal return along with two Ontario schedules, and the CRA calculates what you’re owed.

The Ontario Trillium Benefit

The Trillium Benefit combines three credits into one payment. You complete a single form and the CRA sorts out your entitlement under each component.1Canada Revenue Agency. Ontario Trillium Benefit Questions and Answers If your total annual entitlement is $360 or less, you receive it as a lump sum, usually in July. Otherwise, payments come monthly.

Ontario Sales Tax Credit

This piece offsets some of the HST you pay on everyday purchases, and the CRA calculates it from your income without any receipts. For the 2026 benefit year (July 2026 through June 2027), you must be an Ontario resident and, before June 1, 2027, meet one of these conditions: be 19 or older, be or have been married or in a common-law relationship, or be a parent who lives or has lived with your child.2Government of Ontario. Ontario Trillium Benefit The maximum is $378 per adult and per child, and it phases out as income rises.

Ontario Energy and Property Tax Credit

This credit helps with property taxes and home energy costs. The rules mirror the sales tax credit, except the minimum age is 18 rather than 19.3Canada Revenue Agency. Ontario Energy and Property Tax Credit Questions and Answers You must have lived in a principal Ontario residence for which you or someone on your behalf paid rent or property tax during the previous year.4Canada Revenue Agency. Province of Ontario

For 2026, the maximum credit is $1,307 for non-seniors ($290 energy plus $1,017 property tax) and $1,488 for seniors ($290 energy plus $1,198 property tax).3Canada Revenue Agency. Ontario Energy and Property Tax Credit Questions and Answers The actual amount depends on your rent or property tax paid and your adjusted family net income. Watch for one common problem: students living in university residences that are exempt from municipal property tax can only claim a $25 occupancy cost, not the full residence fee.

Northern Ontario Energy Credit

If you live in a designated northern Ontario community, you can claim an additional credit for higher heating costs. For 2026, a couple or family can receive up to $290, reduced by 1% of adjusted family net income above $65,356 and eliminated entirely above $94,355.5Canada Revenue Agency. 2026 Northern Ontario Energy Credit Calculation Sheet Singles receive a lower maximum, calculated on a separate CRA worksheet. This credit is rolled into the same Trillium payment, not paid separately.

Rebates for Seniors

Ontario Seniors Care at Home Tax Credit

Seniors aged 70 or older can claim this refundable credit for medical expenses and home care costs. Eligible expenses include items like hospital beds, walking aids, and in-home care services, provided they meet the definition of qualified medical expenses under the tax code. The credit equals 25% of eligible expenses up to $6,000, for a maximum of $1,500 per year. Because it is refundable, you receive the full amount even if you owe no provincial tax. The credit starts to shrink once family net income exceeds $35,000, reduced by 5% of income above that threshold.

Ontario Senior Homeowners’ Property Tax Grant

This grant is separate from the property tax component of the Trillium Benefit. To qualify for the 2026 grant, you must have been at least 64 years old on December 31, 2025, an Ontario resident on that date, and you or your spouse must have owned and occupied a principal residence for which property tax was paid.6Canada Revenue Agency. Ontario Senior Homeowners’ Property Tax Grant Questions and Answers

The maximum grant is $500 or the eligible property tax you actually paid, whichever is less. For single, separated, divorced, or widowed seniors, the grant decreases by 3.33% of adjusted net income above $35,000 and disappears at $50,000. For married or common-law couples, it decreases by 3.33% of adjusted family net income above $45,000 and disappears at $60,000.6Canada Revenue Agency. Ontario Child Benefit

Families with children under 18 can receive up to $1,727 per child per year.7Government of Ontario. Ontario Child Benefit The payment is based on your adjusted family net income from the previous year’s return and decreases as income rises. There is no separate application. The CRA calculates it when you file, and payments generally arrive with the federal Canada Child Benefit each month.

In shared custody situations, each parent receives 50% of the amount they would have received with full custody, calculated on their own adjusted family net income. The CRA does not use other percentages or redirect the full amount to one parent.8Government of Canada. Canada Child Benefit – How Much You Can Get Both parents must file a return for the CRA to process payments, so even a parent with little or no income should file.

Low-Income Workers Tax Credit (LIFT)

LIFT reduces or eliminates Ontario personal income tax for workers with modest earnings. It is non-refundable, so it can bring your provincial tax bill to zero but will not generate a cash refund on its own. The maximum is $875, or 5.05% of employment income, whichever is lower.9Government of Ontario. Low-Income Workers Tax Credit

You get the full credit if your individual adjusted net income is $32,500 or less, or your family adjusted net income is $65,000 or less. Above those amounts, the credit shrinks by 5% of the excess and disappears once individual income reaches $50,000 or family income reaches $82,500.9Government of Ontario. Low-Income Workers Tax Credit One limit worth knowing: LIFT cannot offset the Ontario Health Premium, a separate charge built into your return that starts once taxable income exceeds $20,000 and scales up to $900 above $200,000.10Canada Revenue Agency. How to Claim Ontario Tax Credits

Most Ontario rebates flow from your annual return through two forms:

Gather your documents before you start. For the Trillium Benefit, you need the total rent or property tax paid during the previous calendar year. For the Seniors Care at Home credit, collect receipts for all qualifying medical expenses. The CRA requires you to keep supporting records for at least six years from the end of the tax year they relate to, so hold on to receipts after filing.13Justice Laws Website. Income Tax Act – Section 230 You will also need Social Insurance Numbers for yourself, your spouse or common-law partner, and any dependents. The Ontario Child Benefit needs no separate form; the CRA calculates it from your return and your Canada Child Benefit registration.

When Payments Arrive

File electronically if you can. The CRA’s service standard is a notice of assessment within two weeks of receiving an online return, while paper returns take up to 12 weeks.14Canada Revenue Agency. You do not report them as income on your federal return, and receiving them does not affect your tax bracket.17Canada.ca. Canada Child Benefit The same applies to the Senior Homeowners’ Property Tax Grant and the Seniors Care at Home refund.

What Filing Late Costs You

Filing late has two separate consequences. If you owe a balance, the CRA charges a late-filing penalty of 5% of the amount owed plus 1% for each full month the return is late, up to 12 months.18Canada Revenue Agency. Interest and Penalties on Late Taxes – Personal Income Tax The part people miss: the CRA cannot calculate or issue your Ontario benefits until it processes your return. Late filing delays or suspends your Trillium Benefit, Ontario Child Benefit, and other credits until the return is in. Even with no income, filing on time keeps the payment stream running.
