Ohio OT License Renewal Requirements: Deadline, CEUs, and Fee

Ohio OT license renewal happens every two years through the eLicense Ohio portal. Occupational therapists renew by June 30 of each odd-numbered year; occupational therapy assistants renew by June 30 of each even-numbered year. You’ll need 20 contact hours of continuing education for the cycle and a $73.50 payment. Miss the deadline and the license expires automatically, with no late-renewal option.

When Your Renewal Is Due

OTs and OTAs sit on opposite two-year cycles. Occupational therapists must renew by June 30 of each odd-numbered year, and occupational therapy assistants by June 30 of each even-numbered year.¹ The next OTA deadline is June 30, 2026; OTs are due next on June 30, 2027.²

If your license was issued on or after March 1 of the relevant renewal year, your initial license runs through the end of the next full renewal cycle, so your first renewal is deferred.¹ Renewal notices go to the email address on file with the board, so keep it current.

The 20-Hour Continuing Education Requirement

Each cycle requires 20 contact hours of continuing education. At least one hour must cover ethics, jurisprudence, or cultural competence.³ The other 19 hours can address any topic within your professional scope.

Your first renewal after getting your initial license is different: the 20-hour requirement is waived entirely for that first cycle. It’s a blanket exemption, not a prorated calculation. The full 20 hours apply beginning with your second renewal.³

One quick note if you’re working from older materials: the previous CE rule, 4755-9-01, was rescinded in August 2023. The current rule is 4755:1-3-01. Employer checklists and study guides written before that change may still reference the old citation.

Fee

Renewal costs $70, plus a $3.50 eLicense processing charge, for a total of $73.50 paid by credit card in the portal.⁴ The amount is the same for OTs and OTAs. Ohio’s administrative code caps the biennial renewal fee at $100.⁵

How to Renew Through eLicense Ohio

All renewals go through elicense.ohio.gov.⁶ Sign in and click “Renew” next to your active license. The system walks you through confirming personal information, entering CE credits, and updating employer and practice location details.

Enter each course individually, matching the completion certificate: course title, completion date, and contact hours. Review your entries, pay the fee, and submit. You’ll get a confirmation email, and the updated status will appear in the board’s public registry. Your eLicense login credentials count as your electronic signature on the application.¹

If You Miss June 30

Ohio does not allow late renewal. If the application, fee, and CE hours aren’t in by June 30, the license expires automatically.⁴ You cannot practice in any capacity with an expired license, including under supervision.

Getting the license back means filing a reinstatement application, which is substantially more involved than a routine renewal. Reinstatement requires passing the OT laws and rules jurisprudence exam, a BCI/FBI criminal background check, a certification of entry-level education, verification of any other state licensure you hold, and an employment history form.⁷ The reinstatement fee is capped at $100.⁵

Practicing with an expired license is a misdemeanor under Ohio Revised Code 4755.99 and grounds for disciplinary action under 4755.11.¹ Potential consequences include suspension, revocation, fines, probation, or required corrective courses.⁸

CE Audits After Renewal

After each renewal period, the board randomly selects a percentage of licensees for a continuing education audit. The eLicense system generates the selection automatically, and notice letters go out after the June 30 deadline.⁹ Licensees with active disciplinary actions are automatically included.

If you’re selected, respond within the timeframe on your notice and provide certificates for every reported hour. Each certificate should show your name, the sponsor or presenter, the completion date, and the contact hours awarded. For graduate or undergraduate coursework, submit an unofficial transcript along with the catalog description. Documentation goes through eLicense or to CEAudit@otptat.ohio.gov in PDF, JPEG, or TIFF format.⁹ Failing to respond, or coming up short on hours, can lead to disciplinary action. Hold onto your CE records well past the cycle they cover.

NBCOT and Compact Privilege Are Separate

Renewing your Ohio license does not renew your NBCOT certification, and holding a compact privilege in another state does not renew your Ohio license. NBCOT runs on a three-year cycle with 36 units, renewal season is January through March, and the online fee is $65.¹⁰¹¹¹²⁵ Your biennial Ohio renewal still stands on its own.
