Non-TD ATM Fee Charge: Who Pays, How to Avoid It, and Disputes

A “NONTD ATM FEE” line on a TD Bank statement is TD Bank’s own charge for using an ATM outside its network. The non-TD ATM fee is $3 per cash withdrawal or transfer at any machine that isn’t a TD Bank ATM.1TD Bank. Personal Fee Schedule It’s separate from the surcharge the ATM’s owner collects at the machine, so a single out-of-network withdrawal can hit you twice: once from TD, once from the ATM.

How the Fee Works

Two charges can land on the same withdrawal. TD’s $3 fee is one of them. The other is whatever the ATM’s owner sets, usually in the range of about $2 to $4, collected at the point of the transaction.2Bankrate. How to Avoid ATM Fees

The $3 TD charge applies only to withdrawals and transfers at an ATM. Balance inquiries at non-TD machines don’t trigger it, though the ATM’s operator may still charge for the inquiry.3TD Bank. Which TD Accounts Pay It

Whether you owe the $3 depends on your checking account, and sometimes your age or balance.

TD Beyond Checking is the only account that reimburses other operators’ surcharges. On every other account, even when TD waives its $3, you’ll still pay whatever the ATM owner adds on.

How to Avoid It

Use a TD Bank ATM. TD operates more than 2,600 of them across 16 states and Washington, D.C., concentrated along the East Coast from Maine to Florida, and every TD checking account allows free transactions at these machines regardless of balance.6TD Bank. Find a TD Bank Near You

Getting cash back at a store checkout with a debit card purchase is another way around the fee, since it isn’t treated as an ATM transaction.8TD Bank. Avoiding Overdraft and ATM Bank Fees If you use out-of-network ATMs often, TD Beyond Checking may be worth considering. It carries a $25 monthly maintenance fee, waived with $5,000 in monthly direct deposits, a $2,500 minimum daily balance, or $25,000 across linked TD accounts.9TD Bank. TD Beyond Checking

How It Compares

TD’s $3 fee sits above the national average for a bank’s own out-of-network charge, which Bankrate’s 2025 study put at $1.64. Combined with the average operator surcharge of $3.22, the typical out-of-network withdrawal nationwide reached a record $4.86.10Bankrate. Disputing a Fee You Think Is Wrong

If a non-TD ATM fee shows up for a transaction you believe was actually at a TD ATM, or for a debit card purchase rather than a cash withdrawal, federal law gives you a dispute path. Under Regulation E, you have 60 days from the date the statement containing the error was sent to notify the bank. The notice can be oral or in writing and should include your account number, the transaction, and why you think it’s an error.12Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Regulation E Section 1005.11 – Procedures for Resolving Errors

Once you notify TD, it generally has 10 business days to investigate and resolve the dispute. The bank can take up to 45 days if it needs more time, but it has to provisionally credit the disputed amount to your account within the first 10 business days. If an error is confirmed, TD must correct it within one business day and refund any related fees, and it can’t charge you for the dispute process.12Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.
