You can handle an NJ state ID renewal online through the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission’s MyMVC portal at mymvc.state.nj.us, and the transaction usually takes about ten minutes. Both the standard non-driver ID and the REAL ID version are eligible, the fee is $24, and the new card arrives by mail within two to four weeks.1New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. Who Can Renew Online
The portal only works if your record is already in order. You need to be at least 14, the minimum age for a New Jersey non-driver ID.2New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. Non-driver Identification Card The MVC must also have a current digital photo of you that meets its standards. If the system flags your photo as outdated, it will send you to an in-person appointment instead.
Two other conditions matter. Your legal name on file must match your current name. Marriage, divorce, or a court-ordered name change all disqualify you from the online path and require a walk-in visit to a Licensing Center.3New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. NJ MVC Agency Services And your mailing address must be current, since the card ships to whatever the MVC has on record. If you’ve moved, use the MVC’s online change-of-address tool before you start the renewal. State law requires you to report an address change within one week anyway.4New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. Address Change
What to Have Ready
Before you open the portal, gather your current non-driver ID card number and either your Social Security number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number. The system uses these to match against the records created when you first went through the 6 Points of ID process.5New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. 6 Points of ID You’ll also need a credit or debit card for the fee and a working email address for the confirmation. Online renewal does not accept cash, checks, or money orders.
Confirm you’re on the official MyMVC site before typing anything. The MVC’s online services page links to the correct renewal path for each card type.6New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. NJ MVC Online Services
Steps in the Portal
Go to the MVC’s online services page and choose the renewal link matching your card, standard or REAL ID. The system verifies your identity by checking your card number and SSN or ITIN against its database. Next, it displays the residential address on file. Confirm it or fix it through the address portal before continuing.
Payment comes next. Authorize the $24 charge on a credit or debit card and submit. The MVC runs a background check against its records, and a successful submission produces a confirmation page with a unique transaction number. Print it or save the digital copy right then. That receipt is your evidence that the renewal is in progress and that your ID status is still valid while the new card is produced.1New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. NJ MVC License Renewal
Fee and the Disability Waiver
The renewal fee for a standard non-driver ID is $24. Residents with a qualifying disability pay a $6 fee for the initial card and nothing for renewals. Qualification requires a physician to complete the MVC’s certification form (GU-12). The first application must be filed in person, but every renewal after that is free.2New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. Non-driver Identification Card
When the Card Arrives
New cards are produced centrally and mailed by USPS. Plan on two to four weeks from submission to delivery.1New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. NJ MVC License Renewal During that window, the printed or saved confirmation receipt works as temporary proof that your identification is current, and state agencies and law enforcement generally accept it.
The receipt does not work at the airport. TSA does not accept temporary ID receipts for boarding domestic flights.7Transportation Security Administration. Acceptable Identification at the TSA Checkpoint If you’re flying soon, renew far enough ahead that the physical card arrives, or bring a valid U.S. passport to the checkpoint.
Your renewed card is valid for four years. New Jersey does not charge a late fee for renewing past the expiration date, but if you let it lapse too long you may be pushed back into a full in-person application with new 6 Points of ID documents instead of a simple online renewal.
When You Have to Go In Person Instead
A handful of situations block online renewal and require a Licensing Center visit:
- First-time applicants, who must appear in person by appointment with original 6 Points of ID documents.2New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. Non-driver Identification Card
- Name changes from marriage, divorce, or court order, handled as walk-in transactions.3New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. NJ MVC Agency Services
- Gender marker changes, also walk-in transactions.3New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. NJ MVC Agency Services
- Upgrading a standard ID to a REAL ID, which requires an appointment and original identity and lawful status documents.8New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. NJMVC REAL ID
- Any case where the MVC’s system flags your photo as outdated or non-compliant.
Standard ID or REAL ID at Renewal
Renewing online keeps whichever version you currently hold. That matters because of a federal deadline. Since May 7, 2025, a standard non-driver ID no longer works for boarding domestic flights or entering federal facilities like military bases and nuclear plants.9Transportation Security Administration. REAL ID A REAL ID card is marked with a gold star in the upper corner and satisfies the federal rule.
A standard card is still valid state identification for banking, age verification, and dealing with state agencies. If you don’t fly domestically without a passport, renewing your standard card online is fine. If you do fly and want to stop carrying a passport, use this renewal cycle as the moment to upgrade. The upgrade itself has to happen at a Licensing Center by appointment, but once you hold the REAL ID version, subsequent renewals return to the online path.6New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission.
