NFA Hours: Call Windows, eForms Status, and Processing Times

If you’re looking up NFA hours, you’re usually after one of three numbers: how long your application will take, when you can call the ATF’s NFA Branch, or when the eForms system is up. As of January 2026, an electronic Form 4 for an individual averages 10 days, the NFA Branch answers phones from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM Eastern Time on weekdays, and eForms is built to run 24/7 with a Help Desk staffed 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM Eastern on weekdays.

Current Processing Times by Form

The ATF publishes average processing times monthly, broken out by form and submission method. Electronic filing is faster across every category, though the gap between eForms and paper has narrowed from what it was a few years ago. Your own wait can run shorter or longer than the average depending on pending volume and whether your background check flags for review.

Form 4 Transfer Times

Form 4 covers transfers of a registered NFA item, such as a suppressor or short-barreled rifle, from a dealer to a buyer. January 2026 averages:

  • eForm 4, individual: 10 days
  • eForm 4, trust or legal entity: 11 days
  • Paper Form 4, individual: 28 days
  • Paper Form 4, trust or legal entity: 24 days

Trust and individual eForm times are now nearly identical, which was not always the case.1Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Current Processing Times

Form 1 Making Times

Form 1 is for making your own NFA firearm, such as building a short-barreled rifle from an existing receiver. January 2026 averages are 14 days for eForm 1 and 38 days for paper.1Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Current Processing Times You cannot legally begin the build until the Form 1 is approved. Starting early is a federal offense no matter how confident you feel about approval.

Form 3 Dealer-to-Dealer Times

Form 3 is a tax-exempt transfer between Federal Firearms Licensees holding Special Occupational Tax status. No individual background check is required, so these move quickly: eForm 3 averages 1 day and paper Form 3 averages 7 days.1Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Current Processing Times If you’re waiting for an item to arrive at your dealer, a Form 3 is rarely the bottleneck.

When You Can Call the NFA Branch

The NFA Branch takes calls from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM Eastern Time, Monday through Friday, excluding federal holidays.2Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Applications – eForms – Support The number is (304) 616-4500.

Have this information in front of you before you dial:

  • Your name
  • The name on the trust or legal entity, if applicable
  • The serial number of the item
  • The name of the transferor, which is usually your dealer

Without those details, representatives often cannot locate the application. Early morning Eastern Time and mid-week calls tend to produce shorter waits, though the ATF does not publish hold-time data. If you only need a status check on an electronic submission, the eForms portal shows current status without a call.

eForms System Availability

The eForms platform is designed to be available around the clock, seven days a week, for submitting applications and checking status.3Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. eForms Applications Scheduled maintenance and occasional unplanned outages do take the system down without much warning. A weekend evening outage is usually temporary.

Technical problems with the system itself go to the eForms Help Desk, staffed from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM Eastern Time, Monday through Friday. Reach the Help Desk at 1-888-283-6427 or eforms.admin@atf.gov.2Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Applications – eForms – Support The Help Desk handles login and system issues only. For status on a pending application, call the NFA Branch.

What Can Turn Days Into Weeks

Published averages assume a clean submission. A handful of common issues can reset your clock or extend your wait well past the posted numbers.

Errors on an eForm

Paper and electronic submissions handle mistakes very differently. With paper, the ATF can send the form back for correction and the application continues. With an eForm, there is no correction option. An electronic application containing an error must be disapproved entirely.4Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. eFormsNews

You cannot edit or copy a disapproved eForm. You have to file a new application with the corrected information and make a new tax payment. The tax from the disapproved form is reversed to your credit card within about 30 days, but it cannot be transferred to the new submission.4Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. eFormsNews Meanwhile the processing clock starts over. Check every field before you submit. The most common errors are misspelled names, wrong serial numbers, and trust names that do not match the trust document exactly.

The 10-Day Fingerprint Window

When you file an eForm 1 or eForm 4, you have 10 days from the date of electronic submission to get fingerprints to the ATF.5Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. NFA Form 1 Submission External Guidance with Q&A Missing this deadline can cause a rejection, and a rejection means starting over with a new submission and a new tax payment. Every responsible person listed on the application needs prints submitted, not just the primary applicant.

Two options are available:

  • A digital EFT file uploaded through the eForms system. No mailing, and the same file can be reused for every future application.
  • Paper FBI FD-258 cards, two per responsible person, mailed to the ATF with the cover letter that eForms generates. Postal delivery adds time and new cards are required for every application.

Digital fingerprinting typically runs $30 to $40, with prices from about $10 to $75 depending on the provider and whether they come to you.

False-Match Delays in the Background Check

Every NFA application runs an FBI background check through the National Instant Criminal Background Check System. The most common cause of a long delay is a name and date of birth that closely match someone with a disqualifying record.6Federal Bureau of Investigation. Challenges / Appeals If this keeps happening to you, the FBI offers the Voluntary Appeal File.

The Voluntary Appeal File assigns a Unique Personal Identification Number that you include on future NFA forms and on ATF Form 4473 transactions. The UPIN helps the system distinguish you from anyone with similar identifying information, which cuts down on false-match delays.7Federal Bureau of Investigation. Voluntary Appeal File Enrollment requires submitting a fingerprint card and application to the FBI, and approval currently takes about 60 days. A UPIN does not guarantee instant approval on every future check, but it is designed to prevent the extended delays that can add weeks or months to an NFA application.

Where the Official Numbers Live

Processing times shift from month to month, sometimes significantly. The ATF updates its Current Processing Times page monthly, and that is the number to trust before you file.1Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Current Processing Times Forum posts and social media threads tend to lag the real figures. Alerts for eForms maintenance and system outages are posted on the eForms landing page.3Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. eForms Applications Check both before you submit and you will have a realistic sense of what to expect.
