NC Food Stamp Schedule: Deposit Dates by SSN and Holiday Rules

North Carolina loads Food and Nutrition Services benefits onto your EBT card on the same day every month, somewhere between the 3rd and the 21st. Your exact day on the NC food stamp deposit schedule is set by the last digit of the head of household’s Social Security number, and it does not shift once you’re enrolled. Federal rules cap the gap between any two monthly issuances at 40 days, so the state spreads deposits across a 19-day window rather than releasing everyone’s benefits at once.1eCFR. 7 CFR 274.2 – Providing Benefits to Participants

  • Last digit 1: 3rd of the month
  • Last digit 2: 5th of the month
  • Last digit 3: 7th of the month
  • Last digit 4: 9th of the month
  • Last digit 5: 11th of the month
  • Last digit 6: 13th of the month
  • Last digit 7: 15th of the month
  • Last digit 8: 17th of the month
  • Last digit 9: 19th of the month
  • Last digit 0: 21st of the month

The number that controls your date is the one listed as head of household on your case, not necessarily the number of the person who filled out the application. If you applied jointly and aren’t sure which SSN is on file, call your county Department of Social Services to confirm.

What Happens on Weekends and Holidays

Your deposit date does not move for weekends or federal holidays. EBT issuance runs on an automated system that doesn’t follow banking hours, so if your date lands on a Saturday, Sunday, or holiday, the funds still post that day.2North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services. How to Confirm the Deposit Landed

North Carolina gives you three ways to check your balance any time of day:3North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services. Electronic Benefit Transfer

  • ebtedge.com. Click “More Information” under the EBT Cardholders section and use your 16-digit card number to register or log in.
  • The ebtEDGE mobile app, free on the Apple App Store and Google Play, which shows the same balance and transaction history as the website.
  • The EBT Call Center at 1-888-622-7328. Enter your card number at the prompts to hear your current balance.

Your last receipt from an authorized retailer also prints the remaining balance at the bottom.

Unused Benefits Between Deposits

Anything you don’t spend rolls over to the next month. Receive $298 in January, spend $200, and the leftover $98 is still there when February’s deposit posts on top of it. There’s no monthly use-it-or-lose-it rule.

A long stretch of inactivity is a different story. If the card sits unused for nine consecutive months, or 274 days, the state can permanently remove the remaining balance from your account. You’ll get a notice at least 30 days before the funds are pulled. Any purchase, even a small one, resets the clock. If your household is temporarily receiving very little or nothing, a single grocery run every few months keeps the balance safe.

When You Can Get Benefits Faster

New applicants in severe financial hardship don’t have to wait for the standard timeline. Expedited processing puts a working EBT card in your hands within seven calendar days of applying, and North Carolina must approve qualifying cases by the fourth calendar day after the application date.4North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services. FNS 425 Expedited Service Processing You qualify if any of the following fits your household:

  • Gross monthly income under $150 and liquid resources (cash, checking, and savings) of $100 or less.
  • Combined monthly gross income and liquid resources that come out to less than your rent or mortgage plus utilities.
  • A destitute migrant or seasonal farmworker household with liquid resources of $100 or less.

Identity is the only factor that has to be verified before approval, and that can be done with a driver’s license or even a phone call to someone who can vouch for you. Keeping Your Deposits on Schedule

Two things can interrupt an otherwise predictable deposit date: missed reporting and missed recertification.

North Carolina requires you to report certain household changes by the 10th of the month after the change happens. That includes income rising above your household’s reporting threshold, an able-bodied adult’s work hours dropping below 80 per month, and any lottery or gambling winnings over $4,250.5NCDHHS. Online FNS and SNAP Change of Circumstance

Most FNS households in North Carolina are certified for six months at a time. You can file your recertification online starting the first day of the month your certification expires; if your certification ends June 30, you can submit as early as June 1.6NCDHHS. Online FNS and SNAP Recertifications Miss the deadline and benefits stop. Restarting means a fresh application and potentially several weeks with no deposit on your usual day.
