Most Navy Federal credit cards include rental car insurance in the form of an Auto Rental Collision Damage Waiver that covers theft of and physical damage to a rental vehicle at no extra cost. The benefit applies when you charge the entire rental to your Navy Federal card and decline the rental company’s own damage waiver. Inside the United States it pays as secondary coverage, picking up your auto insurance deductible and gaps your insurer won’t cover; outside the country it pays as primary coverage from the first dollar.1Navy Federal Credit Union. What the Waiver Pays For
The benefit covers physical damage to and theft of the rental vehicle itself. It also covers three charges rental companies routinely add after an incident: valid loss-of-use fees (what the company bills you while the car sits in the shop), reasonable towing to the nearest repair facility, and administrative fees.1Navy Federal Credit Union. Auto Rental Insurance Benefits Summary Loss-of-use charges catch people off guard because they can run hundreds of dollars, and having them included matters.
The waiver does not cover liability. If you injure someone or damage another vehicle, this benefit pays nothing toward those costs. You need either your personal auto policy’s liability coverage, which often extends to rentals, or a separate liability product from the rental company. If you don’t carry personal auto insurance at all, buying the rental company’s liability option is worth serious consideration.
Secondary vs. Primary Coverage
For rentals inside the United States, the Navy Federal waiver is secondary. You file first with your personal auto insurer; Navy Federal then reimburses what that policy didn’t pay, including your collision or comprehensive deductible and any loss-of-use or administrative charges your insurer denied.2Navy Federal Credit Union. Auto Rental Insurance Benefits Summary
If you don’t carry personal auto insurance, the benefit reimburses you directly for covered theft, damage, loss-of-use charges, administrative fees, and towing. With no other policy to go through, it effectively functions as your primary coverage.1Navy Federal Credit Union. Auto Rental Insurance Benefits Summary
When you rent outside your country of residence, the coverage becomes primary regardless of whether you carry personal insurance. Navy Federal pays the covered amount without requiring you to file through another insurer first.1Navy Federal Credit Union. Which Navy Federal Cards Include the Benefit
Several Navy Federal cards carry rental coverage, and the terms vary by card and by network:
- Visa Signature Flagship Rewards includes the Visa Auto Rental CDW.3Navy Federal Credit Union. Visa Signature Flagship Rewards Card Benefit Guide
- GO REWARDS covers physical damage, theft, towing, and loss-of-use charges for rentals of 15 days or less when you pay the full rental with the card.4Navy Federal Credit Union. GO REWARDS Credit Card
- More Rewards American Express covers damage or loss of a rental car rented in the United States or Canada only. This card’s rental coverage does not extend outside North America.5Navy Federal Credit Union. More Rewards American Express Card
The underlying waiver program comes from the card network (Visa, Mastercard, or American Express) rather than Navy Federal itself, so specific exclusions and limits can differ. Check the benefits guide for your exact card rather than assuming all Navy Federal cards work the same way.
What You Have to Do for Coverage to Apply
The benefit is not automatic. Four conditions have to be met, and missing any one of them can leave you uncovered:
- Charge the full rental to your Navy Federal card. The entire cost, including taxes and fees, has to go on the eligible card. Splitting payment or using a different card for the deposit can void the benefit.
- Decline the rental company’s CDW or LDW. If you accept the counter’s own damage waiver, the credit card benefit typically will not apply. This is the condition most people miss, because the agent will push hard to sell their coverage.6Visa. Auto Rental Collision Damage Waiver
- Be the primary renter. Your name has to be on the agreement as the primary renter. Additional drivers listed on the contract are also covered; someone who borrows the car without being on it is not.4Navy Federal Credit Union. GO REWARDS Credit Card
- Stay within the rental period limit. Domestic rentals are covered for up to 15 consecutive days; international rentals for up to 31 consecutive days. Longer rentals drop out of coverage entirely.1Navy Federal Credit Union. Auto Rental Insurance Benefits Summary
Vehicles, Platforms, and Countries That Are Excluded
Exclusions are broader than many cardholders expect, and the fine print is where claims get denied.
Vehicle Types
The Visa waiver excludes expensive and exotic cars, antique vehicles, trucks, motorcycles, mopeds, limousines, recreational vehicles, cargo vans, and any vehicle with an open cargo bed. Passenger vans designed to seat up to nine people including the driver are covered, but larger vans are not. A minivan for a family trip is fine; a 12-passenger van for a group is not.7Visa. Peer-to-Peer Platforms
Credit card waivers generally require the rental to come from a licensed commercial rental agency. Platforms like Turo and Getaround, where individuals rent out their personal vehicles, do not qualify. If you book through one of them, plan on buying the platform’s own protection; your card almost certainly will not back you up.
Countries
Both Visa and Mastercard exclude rentals originating in Israel, Jamaica, the Republic of Ireland, and Northern Ireland.7Visa. Guide to Benefits for MasterRental Coverage Coverage is also unavailable in any country where local law prohibits the benefit. In those places, you’ll need the rental company’s full coverage or a standalone travel insurance policy.
Filing a Claim
Start the process at the rental counter before you leave. Get the rental company’s incident report documenting the damage and a copy of your final rental agreement showing the full charge went to your Navy Federal card. If theft or vandalism is involved, file a police report at the scene.
Report the incident to the benefit administrator as soon as possible and no later than 45 days from the date of damage or theft. The administrator sends a claim form and a list of required documents, which typically includes the damage report, a repair estimate, the police report where applicable, and proof of rental payment.9Navy Federal Credit Union. Credit/Debit Card Benefits Guide
Then the deadlines tighten. Your completed and signed claim form has to be postmarked within 90 days of the incident. All remaining supporting documents have to be postmarked within 365 days or the claim can be denied.10Visa. Auto Rental Collision Damage Waiver Terms and Conditions The 90-day deadline is the one that bites, because getting final billing and repair estimates out of a rental company, especially overseas, can take longer than you’d expect. Chase the rental agency rather than waiting on their timeline. If the rental company has already charged your card for damages, include proof of those charges in your submission, and keep copies of every document along the way.
Confirming Your Coverage Before You Rent
Credit card benefits change. Networks renegotiate terms and issuers update benefits guides, so last year’s coverage may not match this year’s. Pull up your card’s benefits guide on Navy Federal’s website before any rental where you plan to rely on the card. Every card has a downloadable PDF that spells out the waiver terms, excluded vehicles, covered rental periods, and whether coverage is secondary or primary.
Give international rentals extra attention. Confirm that the country isn’t on the exclusion list, that your specific card’s coverage extends internationally at all (the More Rewards Amex, as noted, covers only the U.S. and Canada5Navy Federal Credit Union. More Rewards American Express Card), and whether the rental agency abroad requires any additional paperwork such as a written waiver. Five minutes before the trip can save a denied claim after the fender is already dented.
