National Bank Holidays: Dates, Transfer Delays, and Due Dates

Banks in the United States will close on eleven federal bank holidays in 2026, and on each of those days the Federal Reserve’s settlement systems go dark, which means ACH transfers, wire payments, and check deposits all pause until the next business day. The dates run from New Year’s Day on Thursday, January 1 through Christmas Day on Friday, December 25, with one holiday (Independence Day) falling on a Saturday.

The 2026 Bank Holiday Dates

The Federal Reserve publishes its holiday schedule years in advance, and private banks almost universally follow it because they cannot settle transactions with other institutions while the Fed is closed.1Federal Reserve Board. Holidays Observed – K.8 The 2026 dates are:

  • New Year’s Day — Thursday, January 1
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Day — Monday, January 19
  • Washington’s Birthday (Presidents Day) — Monday, February 16
  • Memorial Day — Monday, May 25
  • Juneteenth National Independence Day — Friday, June 19
  • Independence Day — Saturday, July 4 (Federal Reserve Banks open Friday, July 3; Board of Governors closed)
  • Labor Day — Monday, September 7
  • Columbus Day — Monday, October 12
  • Veterans Day — Wednesday, November 11
  • Thanksgiving Day — Thursday, November 26
  • Christmas Day — Friday, December 25

These are the eleven legal public holidays set out in federal law at 5 U.S.C. § 6103.2Legal Information Institute. 5 U.S. Code 6103 – Holidays The statute governs federal employees, not private banks, but because the Federal Reserve observes all eleven, banks close alongside it. A branch that opened its lobby on Thanksgiving could take your paperwork, but it could not actually move money to another bank until the Fed reopened.

The Weekend Rule and July 4, 2026

Independence Day 2026 lands on a Saturday, and the Fed has a fixed protocol for weekend holidays. When a holiday falls on a Saturday, Federal Reserve Banks and their branches stay open the preceding Friday and process transactions normally, though the Board of Governors closes. So Friday, July 3, 2026 is a regular processing day at the Fed. Individual banks may still choose to close early or shut branches that Friday, so check with yours before relying on it for a time-sensitive transfer.

When a holiday falls on a Sunday, all Federal Reserve offices close the following Monday, which becomes the effective holiday for settlement. None of the 2026 holidays fall on a Sunday.

What Stops Working on a Bank Holiday

ACH Transfers and Direct Deposits

The ACH Network handles most routine electronic payments: payroll direct deposits, recurring bill payments, tax refunds, and transfers between accounts at different banks. None of these settle on Federal Reserve holidays because the Fed’s National Settlement Service is closed.3Nacha. ACH Payments Fact Sheet Both credits (a paycheck arriving) and debits (an automatic loan payment) are affected.

Thanksgiving 2026 illustrates the effect. Payroll sent by ACH for Thursday, November 26 will not settle until Friday, November 27 at the earliest. A Friday holiday like Juneteenth is worse: the settlement window closes Thursday evening and does not reopen until Monday. Peer-to-peer apps like Venmo and Zelle use ACH to move money into and out of your linked bank account, so those transfers face the same delays even though the app itself works fine on your phone.

Wire Transfers

The Fedwire Funds Service, which handles large-value and time-sensitive wires, operates Monday through Friday and shuts down on every Federal Reserve holiday.4Federal Reserve Financial Services. Wholesale Services Operating Hours and FedPayments Manager Hours of Availability A domestic wire that would normally clear within hours can stall for days if you send it before a holiday-adjacent weekend. If you are closing on a home purchase or hitting a settlement deadline, pick your transfer date around the calendar above.

Check Holds

Regulation CC, the federal rule on funds availability, defines “business day” to exclude Saturdays, Sundays, and every federal holiday in the statute.5Legal Information Institute. 12 CFR 229.2 – Definitions That controls how your bank counts the hold on a deposited check. Deposit a check Wednesday with a two-business-day hold, and you normally get access Friday. If Thursday is a holiday, access shifts to Monday because Thursday does not count.

Cash deposited in person and incoming ACH credits must be available by the next business day, and U.S. Treasury checks, in-person cashier’s checks, and checks drawn on the same bank also qualify for next-business-day availability.6eCFR. 12 CFR 229.10 – Next-Day Availability Every one of those timelines gets an extra calendar day when a holiday sits in the middle.

What Still Works

Plenty keeps running. ATMs dispense cash and accept deposits around the clock, though deposits do not post until the next business day. Mobile banking apps let you check balances, move money between accounts at the same bank, and photo-deposit checks, but the processing clock on that mobile deposit does not start until your bank’s next business day.

Debit and credit card purchases go through on holidays because they run on card networks like Visa and Mastercard rather than the Federal Reserve’s rails. You get an authorization in real time; the actual bank-to-bank settlement waits for the Fed to reopen, but the transaction works for you instantly.

The one payment channel that ignores holidays entirely is the FedNow Service, launched in 2023, which processes instant payments 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, including every federal holiday.7Federal Reserve Board. FedNow Service If both your bank and the recipient’s bank participate, a FedNow transfer settles in seconds on Christmas morning the same as any Tuesday afternoon. Not every bank has adopted it yet, so check with yours.

Payment Due Dates That Land on a Holiday

Credit Cards

Federal rules protect you when a credit card due date falls on a day your issuer does not process payments, including weekends and holidays. Your payment counts as on time as long as it arrives by 5 p.m. the following business day.8Federal Reserve. What You Need to Know: New Credit Card Rules A due date of Saturday, July 4, 2026 gives you until 5 p.m. on Monday, July 6 with no late fee and no penalty rate.

Tax Filing and Payment Deadlines

The IRS follows a similar rule under federal law. When the last day to file a return or make a tax payment falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday, you have until the next day that is none of those to act without penalty.9Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 U.S. Code 7503 – Time for Performance of Acts Where Last Day Falls on Saturday, Sunday, or Legal Holiday “Legal holiday” includes both the federal holidays observed in D.C. and statewide legal holidays in the state where your IRS office is located.

Mortgages and Other Loans

Mortgage payments usually carry a grace period, often 15 days, before a late fee applies, so a single holiday rarely creates a late payment problem. The bigger risk with an automatic ACH mortgage draft is timing: if the withdrawal date is a holiday, the pull happens the next business day and can hit your account when you have already spent the money, causing an overdraft. Scheduling a day or two early around holidays avoids the mismatch.

Planning Around the Calendar

If a payment or transfer needs to clear by a specific date and a 2026 holiday sits in the way, start it at least one business day earlier than you normally would. Give yourself two business days of cushion when the holiday falls next to a weekend, as with Juneteenth on Friday, June 19 or Christmas on Friday, December 25. For anything that cannot wait, ask whether your bank supports FedNow.
