Missed Social Security Payment? Report, Trace, and Reissue

If your Social Security payment didn’t show up on its scheduled date, confirm the date first, then call your bank, then contact the Social Security Administration at 1-800-772-1213 to trace it. A missed Social Security payment usually traces back to one of a handful of causes: a bank processing delay, a paper check still in the mail, an eligibility or paperwork issue, or a garnishment or offset that reduced or held the payment. Each has a different fix, and a few checks on your end will point you at the right one before you spend time on hold.

Confirm Your Payment Date First

Most “missed” payments aren’t actually late. Social Security retirement and disability payments go out on the second, third, or fourth Wednesday of the month based on your birth date. Birthdays from the 1st through the 10th are paid the second Wednesday, the 11th through the 20th the third Wednesday, and the 21st through the 31st the fourth Wednesday.1Social Security Administration. Supplemental Security Income runs on a different calendar. SSI is paid on the 1st of each month. If you receive both, the Social Security portion arrives on the 3rd and the SSI on the 1st.1Social Security Administration. Quick Checks Before You Call

If the scheduled date really has passed, do three things before picking up the phone.

Call your bank first. A processing delay can hold a deposit for a day or two, and your bank can tell you whether the deposit is pending, was received, or was rejected. The SSA itself directs you to contact the bank before contacting them.5Social Security Administration. What You Need to Know When You Get Supplemental Security Income

If you receive a paper check, verify the mailing address the SSA has on file. A recent move or a postal misdelivery is one of the more common explanations.

Check your mail and your my Social Security account for recent letters. When the SSA changes, reduces, or suspends a payment, it sends a notice. A letter you set aside can explain the whole thing without a call.

Why Payments Go Missing

When the schedule isn’t the problem, the reason usually falls into one of the following categories.

Administrative Holds

The SSA sometimes places internal holds during audits or when a processing error flags an account. These are temporary, but the payment won’t release until the underlying issue is cleared. If nothing else fits, this is often what a representative will tell you when you call.

Eligibility Changes

SSI has strict income and resource limits. Countable resources are capped at $2,000 for an individual and $3,000 for a couple.6Social Security Administration. 2026 Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) Fact Sheet If your countable income exceeds the allowable limit, you cannot receive SSI for that month.7Social Security Administration. SSI Income A new source of income, a change in living arrangement, or a change in marital status can shift eligibility, especially if the change wasn’t reported.

For SSDI, returning to work is the usual trigger. After a nine-month trial work period, cash benefits are suspended for any month earnings exceed the substantial gainful activity threshold, which in 2026 is $1,690 per month, or $2,830 if you’re blind.8Social Security Administration. Disability Benefits – Your Continuing Eligibility Benefits can also stop if a medical review finds your condition has improved.

Missed Paperwork

Both SSDI and SSI require periodic reviews. Failing to cooperate with a Continuing Disability Review is grounds for stopping benefits.9Social Security Administration. How We Decide if You Still Have a Qualifying Disability SSI recipients also face annual financial redeterminations. If a request for information is missed, payments stop until you respond. A letter in a pile of mail is a common way people find out too late.

Overpayment Recovery

If the SSA determines you were previously paid more than you were owed, it recovers the difference from future benefits. Your payment may shrink sharply rather than vanish. For new overpayments identified after March 27, 2025, the default withholding rate for Social Security benefits is 100% of the monthly payment, meaning your entire check can be withheld until the debt is repaid. The rate for SSI overpayments remains 10%.10Social Security Administration. Social Security to Reinstate Overpayment Recovery Rate

If you can’t absorb that withholding, call 1-800-772-1213 or visit a local office to negotiate a lower rate. You can also request a full waiver if the overpayment wasn’t your fault and repaying it would leave you unable to cover ordinary living expenses. Waiver requests use Form SSA-632-BK.11Social Security Administration. Ask Us to Waive an Overpayment

Garnishments and Treasury Offsets

Your payment can be reduced before it reaches your account. The IRS can levy 15% of your monthly benefit through the Federal Payment Levy Program to collect delinquent tax debt. SSI payments, benefits paid to children, and lump-sum death benefits are exempt.12Internal Revenue Service. Social Security Benefits Eligible for the Federal Payment Levy Program The IRS must send a Final Notice (CP 91 or CP 298) at least 30 days before the levy begins.

Social Security benefits can also be garnished to enforce court-ordered child support, alimony, or restitution.13Social Security Administration. Can My Social Security Benefits Be Garnished or Levied Federal law caps support-related garnishment at 50% to 65% of disposable earnings, depending on whether you’re supporting another spouse or child and whether the order includes back payments.14Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1673 – Restriction on Garnishment Separately, the Treasury Offset Program can intercept part of your payment to collect other federal debts, including past-due student loans. If your payment shrank without warning, an offset or garnishment is a likely cause.

How to Report a Missing Payment

Once the scheduled date has passed, your bank shows nothing pending, and any allowed mailing time has run out, contact the SSA. You have three options:

  • Phone: 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778), Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. local time. When prompted, say “check delivery.”15Social Security Administration. Contact Social Security By Phone
  • Online: sign in to your my Social Security account at ssa.gov to see your payment schedule and whether a payment was issued.16Social Security Administration. View Benefit Payment Schedule
  • In person: your local Social Security office, by appointment.17Social Security Administration. Contact Social Security

Have your Social Security number, the expected payment date and amount, and your bank account details ready. The representative will check whether the payment was issued, where it was sent, and whether it was returned. If SSA confirms it was sent but the bank can’t locate it, the next step is with the bank to determine whether the deposit was rejected or routed to the wrong account.

How Payments Get Traced and Reissued

Direct Deposit

Electronic problems resolve fastest. If a bank rejected the deposit because of a closed or incorrect account, the funds return to the U.S. Treasury and the SSA can reissue electronically once you supply correct account information. If you changed banks and forgot to update your deposit information, that is almost always the story.

Paper Check

Tracing a paper check takes longer. The SSA submits a non-receipt claim to the Treasury Department’s fiscal service, which verifies whether the original check was cashed before a replacement can issue. If it wasn’t cashed, Treasury places a stop payment and the SSA reissues it. A replacement through this process can take three to five weeks.

If Treasury determines the check was fraudulently cashed by someone else, you’ll sign an affidavit so Treasury can pursue recovery. Claims must be filed within one year of the check’s issuance date, and the investigation can stretch to several months.

Emergency Payments if You Can’t Wait

If a delayed or missing payment leaves you unable to cover food, shelter, clothing, or medical care, the SSA can issue expedited funds. Two options exist for SSI:

  • Emergency advance payment for new SSI claimants facing a financial emergency while benefits are delayed. The amount is the lesser of the monthly federal benefit rate ($994 for an individual in 2026), the total amount owed, or the amount needed for the emergency.18Social Security Administration. Expedited Payments (SSI)19Social Security Administration. SSI Federal Payment Amounts for 2026
  • Immediate payment for new claimants and current SSI recipients whose benefits are delayed or missing and who face a financial emergency. The cap is $2,000.18Social Security Administration. Expedited Payments (SSI)

Both are advances against future benefits and will be deducted from a later check. Retirement and SSDI recipients have more limited emergency options, but explaining the severity of the situation on the phone can sometimes speed processing.

If Your Benefits Were Suspended or Stopped

When a missing payment turns out to be a suspension or termination, you have the right to appeal. The SSA provides four levels:20Social Security Administration. Appeal a Decision We Made

  • Reconsideration, a fresh review by someone not involved in the original decision. This is the required first step.
  • A hearing before an administrative law judge, who will take testimony and review evidence.
  • Appeals Council review of the hearing decision.
  • A civil action in U.S. District Court as a last resort.

You generally have 60 days from the date you receive a decision to file at any level. Don’t miss it. If the suspension came from incorrect information or a paperwork mix-up, reconsideration often resolves it without going further.
