The federal mini split tax credit expired December 31, 2025, but if your system was installed and running by that date you can still claim up to $2,000 on your 2025 return using IRS Form 5695. Systems placed in service on January 1, 2026 or later do not qualify.1Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 25C – Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit
How Much the Credit Is Worth
The credit, authorized under Internal Revenue Code Section 25C, equals 30 percent of the combined cost of qualifying equipment and professional installation labor.1Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 25C – Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit Heat pumps, including ductless mini-splits, fall under a $2,000 annual sub-limit, which they share with biomass stoves and boilers. If you installed both a mini-split and a qualifying biomass system in the same year, the combined credit for those items still can’t exceed $2,000.2Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 25C – Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit
The credit is nonrefundable. It can reduce your tax to zero but cannot generate a refund, and any unused portion is lost — there is no carryforward to a future year.3ENERGY STAR. Federal Tax Credits for Energy Efficiency
Who Qualifies
For a heat pump, the home only has to be located in the United States and used by you as a residence. That is broader than the rule for windows, doors, and insulation, which require your principal residence that you own. A renter can claim it for a rental they live in, and a homeowner can claim it for a vacation home they personally use, provided the property isn’t rented out exclusively.4Internal Revenue Service. Two boundaries to note. Landlords who never live in the property cannot claim the credit. And new construction is excluded; the mini-split has to go into an existing home or into an addition or renovation of one.4Internal Revenue Service. Installation date matters too. The system must be placed in service — fully installed and operational — during the tax year you’re claiming. Equipment bought in December 2025 but not commissioned until January 2026 belongs on a 2026 return, and there is no credit available for 2026.
Which Mini-Splits Qualify
Not every mini-split makes the cut. The system had to meet or exceed the highest efficiency tier — excluding any advanced tier — set by the Consortium for Energy Efficiency as of the beginning of the calendar year of installation.5ENERGY STAR. Air Source Heat Pumps Tax Credit
Starting January 1, 2025, ENERGY STAR simplified this by tying eligibility to its Most Efficient designation. Two pathways exist: one for cold-climate or heating-dominated applications (labeled ENERGY STAR Cold Climate) and one for cooling-dominated or dual-fuel setups such as a heat pump paired with a furnace. You can use either pathway regardless of where you live.5ENERGY STAR. Air Source Heat Pumps Tax Credit
Before you file, confirm that your specific model number carries the ENERGY STAR Most Efficient label for the year it was installed. The ENERGY STAR website maintains searchable databases of qualifying products.
Electrical Panel Upgrades That Come With the Job
Mini-split installations sometimes require an electrical panel upgrade, especially in older homes with service below 200 amps. That panel work can qualify for its own piece of the credit if it is installed alongside qualifying energy property, wired to the National Electric Code, and rated for a load capacity of at least 200 amps.6Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 5695 (2025)
The panel sub-limit is $600, separate from the $2,000 heat pump limit. Combined, a mini-split plus panel upgrade could yield as much as $2,600 in credits on the same return.7Internal Revenue Service. Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit
Documentation to Keep
The IRS doesn’t ask you to submit proof with your return, but if the return is audited you’ll need the paperwork.
The core document is the manufacturer’s certification statement, a written declaration that your specific model meets the efficiency standards for the installation year. You also need a valid Qualified Manufacturer Identification Number, or QMID, which is entered directly on Form 5695. Your installer or the manufacturer’s website should provide it.6Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 5695 (2025)
Keep invoices that break out equipment cost from installation labor. Both count toward the 30 percent calculation for heat pumps.8Internal Revenue Service. Frequently Asked Questions About Energy Efficient Home Improvements – Labor Costs The invoice should show the property address, installation date, and taxpayer name. If you did the installation yourself, only the equipment and materials count; you cannot assign a dollar value to your own labor.
Hold the records for at least three years from the date you filed the return, or two years from the date you paid the tax, whichever is later.9Internal Revenue Service. How Long Should I Keep Records
Filing the Credit on Your Return
You claim the credit on IRS Form 5695, Residential Energy Credits.10Internal Revenue Service. About Form 5695, Residential Energy Credits
- Enter the total qualifying expenditure (equipment plus installation labor) on the heat pump line in the Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit section of Form 5695. The form calculates 30 percent and enforces the $2,000 cap.
- Enter the QMID on the applicable line.
- Carry the final credit amount to Schedule 3 of Form 1040, where nonrefundable credits are summarized.
- The credit then flows into your 1040, reducing your income tax liability dollar for dollar.
Form 5695 includes a worksheet that compares your credit against your actual tax liability. If your total tax is $1,400 and your calculated credit is $2,000, you get $1,400. The remaining $600 disappears.6Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 5695 (2025)
A Worked Example
You had a qualifying mini-split installed in October 2025 for $7,500 total: $4,200 for equipment, $3,300 for labor. Thirty percent of $7,500 is $2,250, but the heat pump sub-limit caps your credit at $2,000. If your 2025 federal income tax liability is at least $2,000, you claim the full amount on Form 5695, carry it to Schedule 3, and reduce your tax bill by $2,000. Upgrade the panel to 200 amps at the same time for $1,800, and 30 percent of that is $540, which fits under the $600 panel sub-limit. Total credit: $2,540.2Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 25C – Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit
State Rebates If You Missed the Federal Deadline
For a 2026 installation, the federal credit is gone, but state-administered rebate programs funded through the Inflation Reduction Act may still be available. The Home Efficiency Rebates (HOMES) and High-Efficiency Electric Home Rebate Act (HEEHRA) programs are distributed through individual states, and many had not fully deployed their funding when the federal credit ended. These are point-of-sale rebates or post-purchase reimbursements rather than tax credits, and eligibility rules vary by state, often including income thresholds tied to area median income. Your state energy office is the place to check current program status.
