Military unit awards are decorations given to an entire organization — a ship, squadron, battalion, or task force — for combat heroism or sustained superior performance, and every service member assigned to the unit during the cited dates shares in the recognition equally. If you were present for duty during those dates, or attached by orders for at least 30 consecutive days of the period, you keep the ribbon on your uniform for the rest of your career and it belongs on your permanent record. If you arrived after the fact, you wear it only while assigned to that unit.
The Awards, Ranked From Highest
Every branch layers its unit awards the same way: a top tier for combat heroism, a middle tier for gallantry just short of that standard, and lower tiers for sustained meritorious service or exceptional peacetime work.
Presidential Unit Citation
The Presidential Unit Citation is the highest honor a military unit can receive. It was established by Executive Order 9075 in 1942 and redesignated by Executive Order 10694 in 1957, and it recognizes extraordinary heroism in action against an armed enemy.1Air Force’s Personnel Center. Presidential Unit Citation The degree of heroism required matches what would earn an individual the Distinguished Service Cross, the Navy Cross, or the Air Force Cross.
Army
Below the PUC, the Army awards the Valorous Unit Award for gallantry matching the standard of an individual Silver Star — marked distinction under difficult and hazardous conditions that clearly sets the unit apart from other units in the same conflict.2U.S. Army Human Resources Command. Valorous Unit Award
The Meritorious Unit Commendation covers at least six continuous months of exceptionally meritorious conduct, at a standard comparable to the individual Legion of Merit, and applies primarily to combat service support activities. The Army Superior Unit Award fills a different niche, recognizing outstanding peacetime performance during missions carried out under extraordinary circumstances well beyond the unit’s normal operations.3GovInfo. 32 CFR 578.60 – Army Superior Unit Award
Navy and Marine Corps
The Navy Unit Commendation goes to units demonstrating outstanding heroism (Silver Star level) or extremely meritorious service (Legion of Merit level) that falls short of the PUC. The Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation sits one step below for distinguished service at a lower threshold.
Air Force and Space Force
The Air and Space Outstanding Unit Award goes to numbered units for exceptionally meritorious service or an outstanding achievement of national or international significance. The Secretary of the Air Force approves it, and qualifying actions include combat, operations involving hostile forces, and peacetime performance that clearly sets the unit above similar organizations.4Air Force’s Personnel Center. Air and Space Outstanding Unit Award
Coast Guard
The Coast Guard Unit Commendation recognizes valorous or extremely meritorious service in support of Coast Guard operations, at a standard matching the individual Meritorious Service Medal. The Coast Guard Meritorious Unit Commendation sits below it, at a standard matching the Coast Guard Achievement Medal. Both explicitly require the whole unit to have performed as a team; a large command cannot receive either based solely on what one sub-unit did.5United States Coast Guard. Medals and Awards Manual COMDTINST M1650.25D
Joint Meritorious Unit Award
Units operating in multi-service environments compete for the Joint Meritorious Unit Award, which falls just below the PUC in order of precedence. It recognizes conduct superior to what would normally be expected under combat, a declared national emergency, or extraordinary circumstances involving national interests. To share individually in the award you need permanent assignment or attachment by official orders, plus direct participation for at least 30 days of the cited period (or the whole period if it was shorter). Commanders can waive the 30-day floor for reservists and TDY personnel. Service members who merely supported a joint task force without being assigned or attached to it by orders are not eligible, even if they were under its operational control.6Air Force’s Personnel Center. Foreign Unit Awards
Allied nations sometimes decorate U.S. units, but a foreign unit award is not automatically wearable. Accepting and wearing one requires a formal approval process routed through your chain of command and, for awards not on the service’s pre-approved charts, a determination by the appropriate awards branch.7U.S. Army Human Resources Command. Foreign Award Info Foreign awards approved for honorary or token acceptance only, rather than wear, do not get posted to the personnel record.
What a Unit Has to Do to Earn One
The common thread across every unit award is that the organization must have performed well above what similar units accomplished under comparable conditions. A few standout individuals cannot carry the recommendation. The entire command has to have contributed, and the recommendation package has to prove it.
For valor awards, the unit’s combat performance is tested against the individual-decoration threshold that matches the award. The Presidential Unit Citation demands Distinguished Service Cross-level heroism from the organization as a whole. The Valorous Unit Award demands Silver Star-level performance.2U.S. Army Human Resources Command. Valorous Unit Award
Meritorious awards require sustained excellence across a defined period. The Army’s Meritorious Unit Commendation, for instance, requires at least six continuous months of exceptionally meritorious conduct.8GovInfo. 32 CFR 578.59 – Meritorious Unit Commendation Normal performance of duty, even at a high level, does not qualify. The unit must have gone meaningfully beyond what was reasonably expected of it.
Permanent Versus Temporary Entitlement
Whether you keep a unit award on your uniform for the rest of your career or wear it only while assigned to a particular unit depends on one question: were you there when the unit earned it?
A service member who was assigned to and present for duty with the unit during the cited period, or attached by official orders for at least 30 consecutive days of that period, earns permanent entitlement. That ribbon stays on the uniform through every future assignment.9U.S. Army. DA PAM 670-1 – Guide to the Wear and Appearance of Army Uniforms and Insignia
Temporary entitlement applies to anyone assigned to the unit later, after the cited period ended. They wear the award only while assigned to that unit and remove it when they transfer. Temporary unit awards also cannot be worn in official photographs or for promotion and selection boards.9U.S. Army. DA PAM 670-1 – Guide to the Wear and Appearance of Army Uniforms and Insignia That distinction matters. Getting it wrong at an inspection or a board appearance draws the wrong kind of attention.
How to Wear a Unit Award
In the Army, unit award emblems are worn on the right side of the uniform, no matter which service or agency issued the award. For male personnel, the bottom edge sits one-eighth of an inch above the right breast pocket flap. Female personnel center the emblem on the right side with the bottom edge one-half inch above the nameplate. Awards are arranged in order of precedence from the wearer’s right to left, in rows of no more than three, with the laurel leaves of any frame pointing upward.10U.S. Army. DA PAM 670-1 – Guide to the Wear and Appearance of Army Uniforms and Insignia
Many unit awards sit inside a gold laurel-leaf frame that distinguishes them from individual ribbons. Unit awards received from other services that come with a frame are worn with the Army’s larger citation frame when displayed on an Army uniform. Awards from other services that do not normally carry a frame are worn without one.10U.S. Army. DA PAM 670-1 – Guide to the Wear and Appearance of Army Uniforms and Insignia Unit awards may be worn with full-sized medals or service ribbons, but not with miniature medals.
When a unit receives the same award more than once, you do not wear duplicate ribbons. Small metal devices mark additional entitlements. Army and Air Force wearers use a bronze oak leaf cluster for a second or subsequent award of the same citation, with a silver oak leaf cluster replacing five bronze clusters at the sixth entitlement. Navy and Marine Corps wearers use bronze and silver stars in the same numerical pattern. Only one ribbon for the same unit award is worn at a time, with the appropriate device attached to show the total.
Checking and Fixing Your Record
Your DD Form 214, issued at separation, lists the decorations, unit awards, badges, and campaign ribbons earned across all periods of service, and that makes it the natural starting point for confirming what you are entitled to wear.11National Archives. DD Form 214 Discharge Papers and Separation Documents The catch: awards approved after you separated will not appear on the original document.
For Army units, the Center of Military History maintains Lineage and Honors information and prepares Lineage and Honors Certificates for active units at battalion level and above. Smaller units receive a Statement of Service containing the same information. Requests must be submitted in writing on unit letterhead.12U.S. Army Center of Military History. Lineage and Honors Information The Marine Corps History Division runs the equivalent program. Matching your assignment dates against the citation dates in the unit’s history is how you confirm permanent entitlement.
Veterans and next of kin can also request military service records through the National Personnel Records Center in St. Louis, either online through the National Archives (identity verification through ID.me is required) or by mailing a Standard Form 180. You will need the veteran’s full name as used in service, service number, Social Security number, branch, and dates of service.13National Archives. Request Military Service Records
Currently serving Army soldiers view their records through the iPERMS portal using a CAC or DS Logon. Soldiers cannot submit corrections directly; they work with their HR professionals or Military Personnel Division to add, correct, or remove documents through the Scan Operator upload process.14U.S. Army Human Resources Command. Soldier Self Service – iPERMS National Guard members go through their state HR professionals.
Veterans who have already separated and discover a missing or incorrect unit award follow a more formal path. After exhausting the standard administrative correction procedures, the veteran can file a DD Form 149 with the Board for Correction of Military Records for their branch. Federal law gives the Board authority to correct any military record when it finds an error or injustice.15Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 10 USC 1552 – Correction of Military Records The request must be filed within three years of discovering the error, though the Board can waive the deadline in the interest of justice. The burden of proof is on the applicant, and the DD 149 instructions warn: do not assume a document is already in your record.16Executive Services Directorate (WHS). DD Form 149 – Application for Correction of Military Record Under Title 10 USC 1552
If the Award Was Never Submitted
A different problem is a unit that clearly earned an award but never had one recommended. Army recommendations for the Presidential Unit Citation, Valorous Unit Award, Meritorious Unit Commendation, and Army Superior Unit Award must enter official channels within two years of the action being recognized.17Army Publishing Directorate. Army Regulation 600-8-22 – Military Awards After that, the standard approval route is closed.
Late recommendations still have one path. Under federal law, a Member of Congress can request that the relevant service Secretary review a proposal for a decoration not submitted in the normal window. The Secretary evaluates it on its merits against the same standards that apply to timely submissions and reports the determination to the Armed Services Committees.18Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 10 USC 1130 – Consideration of Proposals for Decorations Not Previously Submitted in a Timely Fashion That congressional route is the only way to move a proposal that has aged out.
