If your IRS refund check is lost, stolen, or never arrived, you can ask the IRS to cancel it and send a replacement by requesting what’s called a refund trace. Start by calling 800-829-1954 to use the automated system, calling 800-829-1040 to speak with a representative, or mailing a completed Form 3911 to the IRS service center for your state.1Internal Revenue Service. Refund Inquiries What happens next depends on whether the original check was cashed, and two separate deadlines can shut the door on the money if you wait too long.
Confirm the Check Was Actually Sent
Before starting a trace, check where the refund stands. The IRS “Where’s My Refund?” tool at irs.gov and the IRS2Go mobile app both show whether your refund has been issued and the date it was mailed.2Internal Revenue Service. Refunds You’ll need your Social Security number or ITIN, your filing status, and the exact whole-dollar amount of the expected refund.3USAGov. Undelivered and Unclaimed Tax Refund Checks
The Taxpayer Advocate Service recommends waiting at least six weeks after mailing your paper return before requesting a trace, since processing and delivery both take time.4Taxpayer Advocate Service. Lost or Stolen Refund Once the tool confirms the check was mailed and enough time has passed for it to arrive, you’re ready to request a trace.
How to Request a Refund Trace
You have three channels, and joint filers have fewer of them. Individual filers can call 800-829-1954 and use the automated system, call 800-829-1040 to reach a representative, or submit Form 3911 by mail or fax. The automated phone system does not work for joint returns; joint filers must either speak with a representative or file the paper form.1Internal Revenue Service. Refund Inquiries

What Happens After the Trace
The trace resolves in one of two ways depending on whether the original check was cashed.
If the check was never cashed, the IRS cancels it and issues a replacement. The IRS does not publish an exact timeline for this scenario, and the replacement goes out by the method the agency selects.1Internal Revenue Service. Refund Inquiries Most lost-check situations end here.
If someone did cash the check, the case moves to the Bureau of the Fiscal Service. The Bureau sends you a claim package with a copy of the cashed check, so you can look at the endorsement signature. You complete the forms in the package to establish that you did not receive or authorize the payment, and the Bureau’s review can take up to six weeks.1Internal Revenue Service. Refund Inquiries The Bureau is effectively running a signature and endorsement check before deciding whether to issue a replacement, so patience matters at this stage.
Two Deadlines That Can Cost You the Refund
Treasury Checks Expire After 12 Months
A U.S. Treasury check becomes void if it isn’t cashed within 12 months of the date it was issued. This is federal law, not just IRS policy: a Treasury check must be negotiated at a financial institution within that 12-month window, or the government is no longer obligated to honor it.7Office of the Law Revision Counsel. United States Code Title 31 – 3328 Paying Checks and Drafts
If you find an old refund check tucked in a drawer past that date, don’t try to deposit it. Contact the IRS to have it reissued. The underlying refund isn’t gone just because the check expired, but you still have to act inside the broader statute of limitations described below.
The Three-Year Refund Claim Window
The general statute of limitations for claiming a tax refund is three years from the date you filed the return, or two years from the date you paid the tax, whichever is later.8Taxpayer Advocate Service. Tens of Millions of Taxpayers May Be Eligible for Significant Tax Refunds – If They Act by July 10 Once that window closes, the money reverts to the Treasury and you lose the right to claim it.
Someone who filed a 2023 return on April 15, 2024 generally has until April 15, 2027 to claim or trace a lost refund from that year. If the return was never filed at all, the three-year clock does not start, but you still have to file to get the refund. If you’re several years behind, this deadline is the one to watch: after it passes, no trace request or phone call will recover the money.
If You Moved After Filing
Don’t count on the post office to forward a refund check. USPS policy calls for forwarding first-class mail for up to a year, but government checks don’t always follow that rule. Some postal facilities return federal checks to the IRS as undeliverable instead of forwarding them.9U.S. Government Accountability Office. Undelivered Tax Refunds: IRS Handling of Undelivered Income Tax Refund Checks Your check may be sitting back at the IRS while you wait for it at the new address.
File Form 8822, Change of Address, to update your mailing address with the IRS.10Internal Revenue Service. About Form 8822, Change of Address Do this as soon as possible after moving, especially if you’re expecting a refund, and confirm the address on any Form 3911 you send. A mismatch between your IRS records and your actual address will produce the same problem all over again.
When a Direct Deposit Fails
Not every missing refund starts as a paper check. If you asked for direct deposit but the bank rejected it, for example because the account was closed or the routing number was wrong, the IRS automatically converts the refund to a paper check mailed to the address on your return. You cannot update your bank information after filing to fix the problem. The conversion typically takes a few weeks, and if the paper check doesn’t arrive after a reasonable waiting period, follow the same refund trace steps above.
