Line 11400 CPP and QPP Benefits: Box 20, Sharing, and Lump Sums

On Line 11400 of your T1 return, you report the CPP and QPP benefits you received during the year by entering the amount shown in Box 20 of your T4A(P) slip. Box 20 is already a total: it bundles your retirement pension, disability benefit, survivor benefit, and any post-retirement benefit into one figure, so you don’t add the individual boxes yourself.1Canada.ca. T4A(P) Statement of Canada Pension Plan Benefits In Quebec, the equivalent figure comes from your Relevé 2 from Revenu Québec.

What Box 20 Already Includes

The Box 20 total on your T4A(P) rolls up several benefit types that appear separately in other boxes on the same slip:

Box 22 shows income tax already withheld from your benefits. That amount doesn’t reduce what goes on Line 11400; you claim it separately as tax paid on Line 43700.3Canada.ca. Line 43700 – Total Income Tax Deducted Most slips arrive by the end of February, by mail or through CRA My Account.4Canada.ca. When You Have to Adjust the Box 20 Figure

Child Benefit Paid to You for a Child

If a CPP or QPP child benefit (Box 17) was paid to you on behalf of a child, that amount is inside your Box 20 total, but it belongs on the child’s return, not yours.6Canada.ca. Line 11400 – CPP or QPP Benefits Subtract the child benefit portion from Box 20 before entering the number on your Line 11400, and report that portion on the child’s T1.

CPP Pension Sharing With a Spouse

If you and your spouse or common-law partner have arranged CPP pension sharing through Service Canada, your T4A(P) shows the benefits paid to you before the sharing adjustment. You have to adjust the Line 11400 entry to reflect your shared amount.7Canada.ca. Pension Sharing This is a separate mechanism from pension income splitting on Form T1032, which CPP benefits don’t qualify for.

What Doesn’t Belong on Line 11400

The CPP death benefit — a one-time lump sum of up to $2,500 — appears in Box 18 of the T4A(P), but it’s not reported on Line 11400 and it’s not reported on the deceased person’s final return either.8Canada.ca. Canada Pension Plan Pensions and Benefits Monthly Amounts If the estate receives it, it goes on line 12 of the estate’s T3 return. If a beneficiary receives it directly (or the estate passes it through), the recipient reports it on Line 13000 of their own T1.9Canada.ca. Death Benefits – Prepare Tax Returns for Someone Who Died

Lump-Sum Payments That Cover Earlier Years

A retroactive CPP or QPP payment — common after a delayed disability approval — goes on Line 11400 in full for the year you received it, even when part of it relates to prior years.6Canada.ca. Line 11400 – CPP or QPP Benefits

If $300 or more of the lump sum relates to previous years, the CRA automatically compares your current-year tax to what you would have paid had those portions landed in the earlier years, and applies the lower result. The calculation shows up on your notice of assessment. Attach the letter from Service Canada that breaks the lump sum down by year, unless that breakdown is already printed on your T4A(P).

How Line 11400 Feeds the Rest of Your Return

The amount on Line 11400 flows into Line 15000, your total income, and from there into several downstream calculations.

OAS Recovery Tax

If your net income exceeds $95,323 in the 2026 tax year, you’ll start losing Old Age Security through the OAS recovery tax.10Canada.ca. Old Age Security Pension Recovery Tax CPP benefits count toward that threshold, and combined with a workplace pension, RRIF withdrawals, or investment income, they can push a return over the line faster than expected.

RRSP Deduction Room

CPP disability benefits count as earned income when calculating your RRSP and PRPP deduction limit.6Canada.ca. Line 11400 – CPP or QPP Benefits If you’re receiving disability payments and have contribution room, an RRSP contribution can offset some of the tax on those benefits.

Pension Income Amount

CPP and QPP benefits do not qualify for the pension income amount on Line 31400.11Canada.ca. Line 31400 – Pension Income Amount If CPP is your only pension income, you can’t claim that credit.

Fixing a Wrong Entry After You File

If you entered the wrong number — forgot to back out a child benefit, missed a pension-sharing adjustment, or left the amount off entirely — the fastest fix is “Change my return” in CRA My Account, which usually processes within two weeks. ReFILE through certified tax software works if you filed that way.12Canada.ca. Changing a Tax Return – Personal Income Tax

A paper T1-ADJ takes about eight weeks for straightforward requests, and up to 45 weeks for complex ones (multiple years, deceased taxpayers, carrybacks). You have 10 calendar years from the end of a tax year to request a refund by adjustment.

If you’re repaying CPP benefits you previously reported — for instance, because Service Canada determined there was an overpayment — claim the repaid amount as a deduction on Line 23200.13Canada.ca. Line 23200 – Other Deductions

What Happens if You Leave CPP Off

Filing late with a balance owing triggers a late-filing penalty plus compound daily interest starting the day after the due date, and can delay other benefit and credit payments.14Canada.ca. Interest and Penalties on Late Taxes

A separate repeated-failure penalty kicks in if you fail to report $500 or more of income on your current return and also failed to report income on any of the three preceding returns. The penalty is the lesser of 10% of the unreported amount, or 50% of the difference between the understated tax and any tax already withheld on that income.15Canada.ca. False Reporting or Repeated Failure to Report Income Because CPP typically has tax withheld at source in Box 22, the penalty may be reduced, but the risk is real: Service Canada sends the CRA the same slip you got, so unreported CPP income is easy to spot.
