Liberty Tax Refund Advance: Loan Tiers, Costs, and Approval

The Liberty Tax refund advance is a short-term loan from Republic Bank & Trust Company that gives you part of your expected federal refund before the IRS processes your return. For the 2026 filing season, advance amounts run from $100 to $6,250, and one tier carries no finance charge at all. The loan is repaid automatically when your refund arrives, so you never write a check.1Republic Bank. Easy Advance

You apply through a participating Liberty Tax office at the same time your return is prepared. Republic Bank runs a soft credit check that won’t affect your score, looks at the size of your expected refund, and decides within minutes. If approved, funds are typically available within 24 hours of the IRS accepting your e-filed return, delivered either to a DeepBlue Debit Account prepaid card or by ACH transfer to your bank account.2Liberty Tax Service. The Three Loan Tiers for 2026

Liberty Tax offers three separate advance products this season. The right one depends on how much you need, when you need it, and how big your refund is.

Holiday Advance Loan

The earliest option, available December 8, 2025 through January 17, 2026. Amounts run from $200 to $1,200. To qualify for the full $1,200, your expected federal refund after authorized fees must be at least $9,950. You have to file your 2025 federal return through Liberty Tax to get it, even though the IRS filing season isn’t yet open when this product launches.3Liberty Tax. Special Offers

Easy $100 Loan

The smallest advance and the cheapest. It carries no finance charge and no interest, so it’s effectively a zero-cost loan. Republic Bank issues it, and it’s available from the start of the IRS filing season through April 15, 2026. You still have to file through a participating Liberty Tax office and agree to the Refund Transfer product.2Liberty Tax Service. Easy 100 Loan

The larger product, ranging from $500 up to $6,250. It’s available January 2, 2026 through February 28, 2026, a narrower window than the other tiers. Qualifying for the $6,250 maximum requires an expected federal refund of at least $8,400 after authorized fees.3Liberty Tax. Who Qualifies

The lending decision belongs to Republic Bank, not Liberty Tax. The biggest factor is the size of your expected federal refund: each tier has a minimum, and the refund also has to cover the loan itself plus tax preparation fees and the Refund Transfer fee.

The bank runs a soft credit inquiry, which doesn’t affect your score, but it does review your credit history to gauge whether your refund is likely to arrive intact. If you owe debts that could trigger a refund offset, such as child support, defaulted student loans, or past-due federal or state taxes, the bank may decline even when your refund on paper is large enough.4Taxpayer Advocate Service. Bring these to your appointment:

  • A government-issued photo ID for identity verification.
  • Proof of income, meaning W-2s, 1099s, or whatever documents cover your situation.
  • Bank account details if you want the leftover refund deposited by ACH. Otherwise you can receive funds on a DeepBlue Debit Account prepaid card.2Liberty Tax Service. Easy 100 Loan

You can’t apply online or independently. The loan application is built into the tax preparation process, and your preparer transmits it to Republic Bank at the same time your return is e-filed.

How Fast You’ll See the Money

Republic Bank’s underwriting is automated and usually returns a decision within minutes of your preparer submitting the application. Approval isn’t instant cash, though. The funds become available after the IRS formally accepts your e-filed return, which can take a few hours or a couple of days during peak season. Once acceptance happens, approved proceeds are typically available within 24 hours.1Republic Bank. Easy Advance

The prepaid card is generally faster than ACH because it doesn’t wait on interbank processing.

What It Actually Costs

Repayment is automatic. You authorize Republic Bank to open a Refund Transfer account, and the IRS deposits your full refund there. The bank then deducts what it’s owed and forwards the balance to you.

The deductions stack up. First the loan principal and any finance charge come out. Then the Refund Transfer fee, which Republic Bank charges at $44.95 for the standard product, plus $14 for any subsequent deposits into the temporary account.5Republic Bank. Pricing Plans Then your Liberty Tax preparation fees. What’s left is yours.

So your take-home refund is smaller than the number on your return. On a $3,000 refund with a $500 Easy Advance that carries a finance charge, plus the $45 Refund Transfer fee, plus storefront preparation fees of $50 to $100, you can easily lose $200 or more before the money reaches you. That’s money you’d keep in full by waiting for the IRS to process the return directly.

Before you sign, Republic Bank must give you a written Truth in Lending disclosure showing the finance charge in dollars, the APR, the total you’ll pay, and an itemized breakdown.6GovInfo. Refund Anticipation Loans (GAO-08-800R) The APR on a refund advance can look alarming because it’s an annualized rate on a loan that lasts only a few weeks. For a loan this short, the dollar figure of the finance charge matters more than the percentage.

What Happens if Your Refund Falls Short

Republic Bank structures the Easy Advance as a no-recourse loan. If your actual refund ends up smaller than expected and doesn’t fully cover what you borrowed, the bank won’t pursue you for the difference and won’t send you to collections.1Republic Bank. Easy Advance

Shortfalls can happen for reasons you don’t see coming. The Bureau of the Fiscal Service can offset your refund to pay child support, defaulted student loans, past-due federal or state taxes, and state unemployment debts.4Taxpayer Advocate Service. Bureau of the Fiscal Service (BFS) Offsets for Non-Tax Debts The IRS can also adjust the refund downward if it finds errors. In either case, Republic Bank absorbs the loss. You’ll receive a notice from the IRS explaining any offset and which agency received the money.

The no-recourse structure is part of why the bank screens applicants carefully upfront.

Why Applications Get Denied

Denials are more common than most applicants expect. The usual reasons:

  • Expected refund too small to meet the tier’s minimum after authorized fees.
  • Outstanding government debts that could trigger a refund offset, which makes you a high-risk borrower for a no-recourse loan.
  • Credit history concerns. Even on a soft inquiry, maxed-out lines, significant delinquencies, or signs of financial distress can lead to denial.
  • A prior unpaid advance where a past refund didn’t cover what was borrowed.

Being denied doesn’t affect your return. Your return still gets filed and your refund still arrives on the normal IRS timeline. You just wait for it instead of getting early access.

Is the Advance Worth It

If you genuinely need cash before your refund lands, the Easy $100 Loan is the least expensive tier because it carries no finance charge. When $100 bridges the gap, you pay only the tax preparation fee and the Refund Transfer fee rather than the finance charge attached to the larger advances.
