Just Energy Cancellation Fees: Costs, Waivers, and Rescission

Just Energy cancellation fees apply only to fixed-rate plans and only when you leave before the term ends and outside the rescission window. The exact dollar amount sits in your Electricity Facts Label (EFL) or equivalent contract disclosure, not in the general terms of service.1Just Energy. Residential Terms of Service – Just Energy Texas L.P. Variable-rate and month-to-month customers pay nothing to leave. Four paths get a fixed-rate customer out without the fee: cancel during the rescission period, let the contract expire, qualify under the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act, or negotiate a waiver.

How the Fee Works

Only fixed-rate contracts carry an early termination fee. Just Energy’s terms of service confirm that variable-rate and month-to-month customers are not charged an exit fee.1Just Energy. Residential Terms of Service – Just Energy Texas L.P. If you’re on a fixed-rate plan, the fee can be a flat dollar amount or scale with months remaining. Across retail energy providers these fees commonly fall in the $50 to $200 range, with longer-term contracts sometimes running higher.

Pull your EFL before you do anything else. It lists your exact fee, your contract end date, and any special cancellation terms. If you can’t find the document, call customer service and ask them to email a copy. Paying the fee doesn’t close the account on its own: you still owe any outstanding balance and any utility disconnection or reconnection charges.1Just Energy. Residential Terms of Service – Just Energy Texas L.P. Build those into any comparison between staying and leaving.

Cancel During the Rescission Window

If you enrolled recently, this is the cleanest escape. Just Energy offers a short post-enrollment window during which you can cancel with no termination charge, and the length varies by market. In British Columbia (FortisBC territory), it is 10 days from enrollment.2Just Energy. How Much Will I Be Charged If I End My Contract Early? In deregulated U.S. states, the window typically runs three to seven business days, depending on your state’s utility commission rules and the terms printed in your contract.

If a representative signed you up at your door, federal law adds another layer. The FTC’s Cooling-Off Rule gives you three business days to cancel any home sale over $25, and the seller must have handed you a cancellation form at the time of sale.3Federal Trade Commission. Cooling-off Period for Sales Made at Home or Other Locations If they didn’t, your window may extend further, and if you were enrolled without clear consent you have grounds to dispute the contract itself rather than negotiate a fee.

Wait for the Contract to Expire

The free exit everyone qualifies for is simply running out the clock. Just Energy sends expiration notices before your term ends. In Texas, the company sends three notices, with the final one arriving at least 14 days before the contract expires.4Just Energy. Terms of Service Residential and Small Commercial – Just Energy Texas Timing varies by state, but you get advance warning everywhere Just Energy operates.

Put your end date on the calendar now rather than trusting that you’ll notice an envelope months from now. Miss the window and you default into a month-to-month variable-rate product.4Just Energy. Terms of Service Residential and Small Commercial – Just Energy Texas That holdover plan has no termination fee, so you can still leave at any time, but holdover rates from energy suppliers can run 50% to 100% above competitive fixed rates. Every month you delay costs you.

Expiration notices sometimes include renewal offers for a new 12- or 24-month fixed term at a rate higher than your original deal. Treat those as a quote to shop against, not a form to sign.

Negotiate a Waiver

Representatives have some discretion to waive or reduce the fee when you have a specific reason. Relocation to an area Just Energy doesn’t serve, job loss, serious illness, and other financial hardship all give you leverage. Framing matters. “I’m moving out of your service area next month” works better than “I found a cheaper rate.” If you’re relocating, have the new address ready and be prepared to send a lease or closing statement.

If the first representative won’t budge, call back and ask for a supervisor or the retention team. Get any agreement in writing by email before you hang up, and note the date, the representative’s name, and any confirmation number.

One workaround some customers try: ask to be moved from the fixed-rate plan to a variable-rate or month-to-month plan. Since variable customers face no exit fee, you can then cancel the following billing cycle. Not every representative will agree, and the company may require a minimum stay on the variable plan, but it costs nothing to ask.

Military Servicemembers

Active-duty servicemembers have a federally guaranteed right to cancel without the fee. The Servicemembers Civil Relief Act lets you terminate when you receive orders for a permanent change of station or a deployment of 90 days or more to a location that doesn’t support the contracted service.5U.S. Army Judge Advocate General’s Corps. SCRA – Termination of Certain Consumer Contracts The provider cannot charge a termination fee, though you still owe for service already delivered.

Send Just Energy written notice of your intent to cancel along with a copy of your orders. Use certified mail or a tracked private carrier so you can prove receipt.6Military OneSource. Military Clause: Terminate Your Lease Due to Deployment or PCS If the company pushes back, your installation’s legal assistance office handles SCRA violations routinely and can intervene quickly.

Making the Call

There is no online cancellation portal. You have to call. California customers use 1-877-226-5368. Everyone else in the U.S. and Canada calls 1-866-587-8674.7Just Energy. How Can I Cancel My Just Energy Contract?

Have your EFL open so the conversation stays grounded in your actual contract terms rather than whatever a representative recalls. Write down the date, the representative’s name, and any confirmation number. If anyone agrees to waive or reduce a fee, ask for written confirmation by email before the call ends. Verbal promises from retail energy representatives are hard to enforce later.

If Just Energy Won’t Budge

When direct negotiation fails, outside agencies can help, but they don’t all do the same thing.

  • Your state public utility commission is usually the most effective first stop. State PUCs regulate retail energy providers and can investigate individual complaints, mediate disputes, and order corrective action. Most have online complaint forms.
  • Your state attorney general or consumer protection office can mediate and bring enforcement actions when a company’s practices violate consumer protection law.8Federal Trade Commission. Solving Problems With a Business: Returns, Refunds, and Other Resolutions
  • The FTC collects reports at ReportFraud.ftc.gov but does not resolve individual disputes. Filing still matters because it feeds pattern detection, but don’t expect mediation.9Federal Trade Commission. Contact the Federal Trade Commission

Small claims court is a last resort for a disputed fee the company refuses to waive. Filing fees vary by jurisdiction and you don’t need an attorney. Before filing, send a written demand letter by certified mail. Companies often settle once they see you’re willing to appear in court, because sending a representative to defend a $150 fee is rarely worth their time.
