JumboCash Charge: How It Works, Spending, and Withdrawals

A JumboCash charge on a credit card, bank statement, or Tufts student account is almost always a deposit into a Tufts University student’s campus spending account. JumboCash is the closed-loop prepaid balance tied to a Tufts ID card, and the four ways to load it (online credit card, direct student-account billing, cash at a campus kiosk, or a mailed check) each leave a paper trail on whichever funding source was used. If the charge came from jumbocash.net on a credit card, someone with the card number, or someone the student shared it with, added money to the account.

How to Confirm the Deposit

Every Tufts student gets a JumboCash account automatically at matriculation. The account works as a prepaid debit balance: swipe or tap the Tufts ID at a participating location, and the purchase amount comes off the balance. The same ID handles building access and library use, so there is no separate card to look for.

Deposits made online at jumbocash.net through a Visa or Mastercard are generally processed instantly, so a matching balance increase should appear in the student’s JumboCash account right around the time of the charge.1Tufts University JumboCash. JumboCash Terms and Conditions The student can log in at jumbocash.net to see the transaction history and confirm the deposit posted. Undergraduates not on a meal plan face a $100 minimum for their initial deposit, which explains a first-time charge that looks larger than expected.2Tufts University JumboCash. Charges billed to a Tufts student account rather than a credit card come from a different route: undergraduates on a meal plan and all graduate students on the Medford/Somerville campus can authorize deposits billed directly to their student account between late August and early April, with a $25 minimum per deposit. Financial aid balances can be used this way.2Tufts University JumboCash. JumboCash Deposit Information

What the Money Can Be Spent On

JumboCash is accepted at more than 20 on-campus locations across the Medford/Somerville, Boston, and Grafton campuses, plus a rotating list of nearby off-campus merchants. On campus, it covers dining halls, the Tufts Bookstore, vending machines, laundry (at a 14% discount versus coins), and printing and copying. Off campus, participating businesses include restaurants and retailers near the Medford and Somerville campuses; the current list lives at jumbocash.net.3Tufts University JumboCash. Some things the balance cannot buy: alcohol, tobacco, gift cards, lottery tickets, firearms, or obscene materials.4Tufts University JumboCash. If the Charge Wasn’t Authorized

If the Tufts ID has been lost or stolen, or if the JumboCash deposit charge doesn’t match anything the student or family authorized, the first step is to log into jumbocash.net and deactivate the card. Then call the campus police non-emergency line at 617-627-3030 for the Medford/Somerford campus.7Tufts University Dining. Dining Meal Plan Policies Deactivation blocks further JumboCash spending on the card.

Tufts’ cardholder rules put the baseline risk of loss on the cardholder. The university states it is not responsible for losses from lost, stolen, or unauthorized use of the card. Once the student reports the loss in writing to JumboCash@tufts.edu, though, liability for further unauthorized transactions ends within two business days of Tufts receiving that report.1Tufts University JumboCash. JumboCash Terms and Conditions Only the cardholder is authorized to use the card; any other use is treated as fraud under program rules. If the account is overdrawn, the negative balance has to be resolved within 10 days of notice from the university.2Tufts University JumboCash. JumboCash Deposit Information

Getting Money Back Out of the Account

JumboCash does not allow partial cash withdrawals under any circumstances. Refunds are available only when a student graduates, permanently withdraws from Tufts, or ends employment with the university.1Tufts University JumboCash. JumboCash Terms and Conditions The remaining balance has to be more than $10, and any funds designated for printing and copying are non-refundable.6Tufts University Dining. JumboCash

To claim a refund, the student submits a JumboCash Account Closure form. Medford/Somerville students receive the credit on their Student Information System (SIS) account; Boston and Grafton students and employees receive a check, which can take two to three weeks.8Tufts University Dining. Request for JumboCash Account Closure Fall graduates must file by the fall Reading Period, spring graduates by the Friday before commencement, and other qualifying students by the spring Reading Period. Tufts also reserves the right to close an account and refund any balance over $10 if the account has been inactive for 18 months or the holder is no longer affiliated with the university.1Tufts University JumboCash. What Federal Prepaid-Card Protections Apply

Because JumboCash is a closed-loop system usable only at Tufts locations and a defined group of nearby merchants, it does not fall under the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s 2019 Prepaid Accounts Rule, which specifically exempts “a college stored value card limited to campus venues.”9National Consumer Law Center. New CFPB Rule Provides Enforceable Protections for Prepaid Cards The federal error-resolution and fee-disclosure rights that cover a general-purpose reloadable prepaid Visa do not automatically extend to JumboCash. Separate Department of Education rules effective July 2016 govern campus cards used to disburse financial aid and prohibit certain fees, but the day-to-day protections a JumboCash holder has (including the two-business-day liability cutoff after reporting a loss) come from the university’s own cardholder agreement.10National Consumer Law Center. New Rules Limit Fees and Use of Campus Prepaid Cards A disputed JumboCash charge on a credit card statement, however, is still a credit card transaction, and the cardholder’s normal chargeback rights with their card issuer are unaffected by JumboCash’s status.
