Is Venmo Going to Send Me a 1099-K Form?

Venmo will send you a 1099-K only if your goods-and-services payments in a calendar year top $20,000 and you have more than 200 such transactions. Both conditions have to be met. Miss either one and no form is issued, though the income itself remains taxable and belongs on your return.

The Two Thresholds Venmo Uses

Federal law requires third-party payment apps to file a 1099-K only when a user crosses both a dollar threshold and a transaction count. For Venmo, that means more than $20,000 in gross goods-and-services payments and more than 200 transactions during the year.1Internal Revenue Service. The “and” matters. If you receive $25,000 across 150 transactions, no form is required, because you did not cross 200 transactions. If you receive 300 payments that add up to $15,000, no form either, because the dollar total came up short.2Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 U.S. Code 6050W – Returns Relating to Payments Made in Settlement of Payment Card and Third Party Network Transactions

Only payments marked as goods and services count. Payments tagged as personal, whether that is a friend paying you back for concert tickets or a family member sending a gift, do not count toward either threshold and are not business income to begin with.3Internal Revenue Service. One boundary worth naming: this $20,000 and 200-transaction rule applies to payment apps like Venmo. If a customer swipes a credit or debit card with you directly, the card processor reports every dollar regardless of volume.3Internal Revenue Service. Understanding Your Form 1099-K

Why the Threshold Almost Dropped to $600

You may have read that Venmo would start reporting anything over $600. That was the plan under the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021, which lowered the threshold sharply and removed the transaction minimum. The IRS delayed the change three years running and floated a $5,000 transitional figure for 2024, but none of it took effect.4Internal Revenue Service. The One, Big, Beautiful Bill, signed into law in 2025, put things back the way they were. It retroactively restored the $20,000 and 200-transaction thresholds as if the ARPA change had never happened.1Internal Revenue Service. Your State May Have a Lower Threshold

A handful of states set their own 1099-K thresholds well below the federal number. Some require reporting at just $600 in gross payments with no transaction floor. If you live in one of those states, Venmo can be required to issue you a 1099-K even when your activity is nowhere near $20,000. Check your state department of revenue for the number that applies where you file.

When and How the Form Arrives

If you do cross both thresholds, Venmo has to send the 1099-K by January 31 of the following year.3Internal Revenue Service. Understanding Your Form 1099-K It will also appear electronically in the app. A copy goes to the IRS at the same time, so the agency already has the number before your return is filed.

The figure on the form is your gross payments. It does not subtract Venmo’s fees, refunds you issued, chargebacks, or any of your business expenses. Your taxable profit is almost always lower than the total on the 1099-K, and you reconcile the difference on your return.

Give Venmo Your Taxpayer Information First

Before Venmo can issue a 1099-K, it needs your taxpayer identification number. For most people that is a Social Security number; for a business entity it is an Employer Identification Number.5Internal Revenue Service. Taxpayer Identification Numbers (TIN) Venmo collects this through an in-app prompt that functions like a digital Form W-9.6Internal Revenue Service. Ignore the prompt or enter the wrong number and Venmo is required to withhold 24% of your incoming payments and send that money to the IRS. This is backup withholding, and it kicks in immediately.7Internal Revenue Service. Backup Withholding The withheld amount is not lost. It appears in Box 4 of your 1099-K and you claim it as a credit when you file, but the cash is out of reach until then.8Internal Revenue Service. If No 1099-K Arrives, You Still Owe Tax

Not getting a form is not permission to skip the income. Any payment you took through Venmo for goods, services, freelance work, product sales, or rent is taxable whether the total was $500 or $50,000.9Internal Revenue Service. Self-employed filers report their business income and expenses on Schedule C, listing gross receipts and subtracting ordinary business costs to arrive at net profit.10Internal Revenue Service. Because no tax is withheld on payments you receive through Venmo, the IRS expects you to send quarterly estimated payments if you will owe $1,000 or more for the year. The deadlines are April 15, June 15, September 15, and January 15 of the following year.12Internal Revenue Service. Estimated Taxes

Fixing a 1099-K That Overstates Your Income

Mistakes happen. A friend tags a reimbursement as a business payment, or a personal item you sold at a loss gets swept into your total. Start by contacting Venmo directly. The issuer’s name and phone number appear in the upper left corner of the form, and you can ask for a corrected 1099-K.13Internal Revenue Service. Actions to Take if a Form 1099-K Is Received in Error or With Incorrect Information

If a corrected form is not going to arrive before your filing deadline, you can neutralize the error on Schedule 1. Enter the erroneous amount on Line 8z as “Other Income — Form 1099-K Received in Error,” then enter the same amount as an offset on Line 24z. The two entries cancel out and your adjusted gross income is unaffected.13Internal Revenue Service. Actions to Take if a Form 1099-K Is Received in Error or With Incorrect Information The same Schedule 1 pairing works for personal items sold at a loss. A personal item sold at a profit is a capital gain and goes on Form 8949 and Schedule D instead.14Internal Revenue Service. Form 1099-K FAQs: Common Situations

Keep copies of every message you exchange with Venmo about the disputed amount. If the IRS later asks why your reported income does not match the 1099-K, those records answer the question.

What Happens If You Skip It

The IRS matches 1099-K totals against filed returns automatically. A discrepancy sets off a notice, and from there the penalties add up. Significantly understating your income can bring a 20% accuracy-related penalty on the unpaid tax, with “significant” generally meaning an understatement above the greater of $5,000 or 10% of the tax that should have been reported.15Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 U.S. Code 6662 – Imposition of Accuracy-Related Penalty on Underpayments

A separate failure-to-pay penalty runs 0.5% of the unpaid balance per month, capped at 25%, and interest compounds daily on top of that.16Internal Revenue Service. Failure to Pay Penalty If the IRS concludes income was hidden on purpose, the civil fraud penalty is 75% of the underpaid tax.17Internal Revenue Service. Return Related Penalties

Report the income whether or not a form shows up. The IRS treats an honest return far better than one that leaves money out.
