Yes, VA disability is paid a month behind. The VA pays disability compensation “in arrears,” meaning each deposit covers the prior month’s benefits. A payment landing in your account on the first business day of February is compensation for January, not February. This one-month lag applies to every VA disability payment, from your very first check to every deposit that follows, regardless of your rating.
How the Arrears Rule Works
The VA deposits disability compensation on the first business day of the month after the month you earned it. September benefits arrive around October 1. October benefits arrive around November 1. When the first of the month falls on a weekend or federal holiday, the deposit moves to the last business day of the previous month rather than the next available day forward.
This is not a processing quirk. Federal regulation states that payment cannot be made for any period before the first day of the calendar month after the award becomes effective.1eCFR. 38 CFR 3.31 – Commencement of the Period of Payment The lag is written into the rule itself, and it applies to original awards, rating increases, and supplemental claims alike.
When Your First Payment Arrives After a Claim Is Approved
The arrears rule causes the most confusion at the start of benefits, because the effective date, the award decision, and the first deposit are three separate events happening at three different times.
The effective date is when your benefits legally begin. For a direct service-connection claim, it is the later of the date the VA receives your claim or the date the disability began. If the VA receives the claim within one year of your separation from active duty, the effective date can reach as far back as the day after you left service.2Veterans Affairs. Disability Compensation Effective Dates
Even after the effective date is assigned, no payment is issued for the month the effective date falls in.1eCFR. 38 CFR 3.31 – Commencement of the Period of Payment If your effective date is September 15, your first payable month is October, and the October payment does not deposit until the first business day of November. From effective date to first deposit is roughly six weeks in that scenario, assuming the VA processes the award immediately.
Most initial claims take months, not weeks, to reach a decision. That delay sits on top of the arrears rule but works out in your favor at the end: when the VA issues its decision, it pays retroactively back to the first full month after your effective date. An eight-month claim produces a lump-sum back payment covering all those months, followed by regular monthly deposits going forward.
2026 VA Disability Payment Dates
Because the VA pays on the first business day of each month, and shifts to the last business day of the prior month when the first is a weekend or holiday, the 2026 deposits fall on these dates:
- January 2026 benefits: deposited January 30, 2026 (February 1 is a Sunday)
- February 2026 benefits: deposited February 27, 2026 (March 1 is a Sunday)
- March 2026 benefits: deposited April 1, 2026
- April 2026 benefits: deposited May 1, 2026
- May 2026 benefits: deposited May 29, 2026 (Memorial Day shifts the date)
- June 2026 benefits: deposited July 1, 2026
- July 2026 benefits: deposited July 31, 2026 (August 1 is a Saturday)
- August 2026 benefits: deposited September 1, 2026
- September 2026 benefits: deposited October 1, 2026
- October 2026 benefits: deposited October 30, 2026 (November 1 is a Sunday)
- November 2026 benefits: deposited December 1, 2026
- December 2026 benefits: deposited December 31, 2026 (January 1, 2027 is a holiday)
Several months contain two deposits close together because a payment shifted backward off a weekend. That can make one month feel flush and the next feel tight, so budget from the deposit dates rather than the calendar month they cover.
The 2.8% cost-of-living adjustment for 2026 took effect December 1, 2025, so the January 30, 2026 deposit is the first one at the new rate.3Social Security Administration. 2026 Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) Fact Sheet
Why a Payment Might Be Late or Smaller Than Expected
The arrears schedule is predictable. What actually hits your account can still vary for a few reasons.
Rating or Dependent Changes in Progress
When your rating increases or you add a spouse or child, the VA has to recalculate before the new amount shows up. You keep receiving the old amount during that window, then get back pay for the difference once the change is processed. Adding a spouse or child can take longer than other updates, especially when both spouses are veterans.4Veterans Affairs. Manage Dependents for Disability, Pension, or DIC Benefits Report changes as soon as they happen so the effective date of any increase is as early as possible.5Veterans Affairs. VA Debt Offsets
If you owe the VA money, from an overpayment or another benefit adjustment, the VA can withhold part of your monthly deposit to collect. For certain military service debts, the offset cannot exceed 15% of your net monthly payment.6eCFR. 38 CFR 1.912a – Collection by Offset From VA Benefit Payments Collection can start even while you dispute the debt.
If you think the debt is wrong or repayment would cause hardship, you can request a waiver using a Financial Status Report (VA Form 5655) with a personal statement. Requesting the waiver within 90 days of the first debt letter stops collection while the VA reviews. By law, the waiver request itself must be filed within one year of that first letter.7Veterans Affairs. Waivers for VA Benefit Debt
Banking Problems
A wrong account or routing number will bounce the payment. If you changed banks recently, update your direct deposit information on VA.gov before the next payment date. Veterans who receive benefits through a Direct Express prepaid debit card can reach Direct Express customer service at 1-888-741-1115 for cards starting with 5332, or 1-886-606-3311 for cards starting with 5115.8Bureau of the Fiscal Service. What to Do If Your Deposit Is Missing
Check the schedule first. A payment you expected on the first may have shifted to the last business day of the prior month, or the reverse. Then confirm your direct deposit details on VA.gov are current, and review your payment history online to see whether the VA actually sent the deposit.9Veterans Affairs. View Your VA Payment History
If your payment history shows the deposit was sent but nothing has posted, give it a couple of business days. If it still does not appear, or if there is no record of the deposit at all, call the VA benefits hotline at 800-827-1000, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. ET.10Veterans Affairs. Helpful VA Phone Numbers Have your VA file number and Social Security number ready before you call.
One boundary worth knowing: if you also receive military retired pay or Combat-Related Special Compensation, those payments come from the Defense Finance and Accounting Service on a separate schedule, not from the VA. Two deposits landing on different days of the month is normal when both are in play.
