Proving Your Number While You Wait
Banks, insurers, schools, and government agencies almost always just need the nine digits. You can give the number verbally or write it on a form. The card exists to prove the number belongs to you, but for day-to-day purposes, knowing it is enough.
If you’ve forgotten the number, look it up through a free my Social Security account at ssa.gov. The account uses multi-factor authentication, so you’ll sign in with a password plus a one-time code sent to your phone or email.3Social Security Administration. Starting a Job Before the Card Arrives

Employment eligibility verification through Form I-9 is stricter. Every new employee has to present documents from government-approved lists to prove identity and work authorization. Form I-9 Acceptable Documents Combined with a List B identity document like a driver’s license, it completes the I-9.
The 90-Day Receipt Rule
This is what most people waiting on a card don’t know. If your card was lost, stolen, or damaged and you’ve applied for a replacement, the receipt from that application is valid for I-9 purposes for 90 days from your first day of work.2U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Receipts Within that window, you need to show your employer either the actual replacement card or another acceptable document. Replacement cards currently arrive within 5 to 10 business days, so the 90-day window has plenty of cushion.7Social Security Administration. Replace Social Security Card

Where the Receipt Rule Doesn’t Reach
The 90-day receipt is for replacement cards. If you’ve never had a Social Security number and are applying for your first one, you don’t have a receipt that works this way, because you haven’t been assigned a number yet. Adult first-time applicants generally have to appear in person at an SSA office and can face longer processing while the agency verifies immigration status with the Department of Homeland Security.8Social Security Administration. What to Do Right Now
If you’re waiting on a card and someone is asking to see one, work backward from what they actually need. If they need the number, give the number, and pull it from a W-2, a tax return, or your my Social Security account if you can’t remember it. If a school, bank, or agency needs paper, ask whether an SSN printout from an SSA field office will do, and be ready with a backup if it won’t. If a new employer needs I-9 documentation, apply for the replacement immediately so you have a receipt, and pair it with a driver’s license or state ID; if the card doesn’t arrive in 90 days, present a certified birth certificate or another List C document instead. The card is coming. Until it does, the number and the receipt cover almost everything the card would.
