Is There a Grace Period for Expired Passports?

There is no grace period for expired passports when it comes to international travel. Once the printed expiration date passes, the passport cannot get you through an airline gate or a foreign border, whether it expired yesterday or five years ago. What people often call a grace period is something different: a simplified renewal window. If your most recent 10-year passport was issued less than 15 years ago, you can renew by mail, and in many cases online, instead of applying in person. That saves paperwork and a trip to an acceptance facility. It does not add a single day of validity to the old book.

Can You Travel on an Expired Passport?

For international trips, no. Airlines check expiration dates at the gate because they face fines when passengers are refused entry, and foreign border officers check again on arrival. The State Department treats a passport as valid only through its printed expiration date.

Domestic flights work differently. TSA accepts an expired U.S. passport or passport card as identification at airport checkpoints for up to two years past the expiration date. Since May 7, 2025, state driver’s licenses used for domestic air travel must be REAL ID-compliant, so an expired passport inside that two-year window is a useful backup if your license isn’t compliant.1Transportation Security Administration. The Six-Month Rule Can Block You Before You Expire

A passport with a future expiration date can still fail at check-in. Dozens of countries require your passport to be valid at least six months beyond your entry or departure date, including China, Thailand, India, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Indonesia. The Schengen Area in Europe requires at least three months of validity beyond your departure, though the U.S. Embassy in Greece recommends carrying six months whenever you travel to Europe because border officers sometimes assume you’ll stay the full 90 days.2U.S. Embassy & Consulate in Greece. Airlines enforce these rules at the counter. Check the State Department destination page for your country before you book.

What the Grace Period Actually Is: A 15-Year Renewal Window

The rule people confuse for a grace period lives in federal regulation. You can renew by mail rather than appearing in person as long as you apply within 15 years of your most recent passport’s issue date.3eCFR. 22 CFR 51.21 – Execution of Passport Application For a standard 10-year adult passport, that leaves roughly five years after expiration. Miss the window and you start over with an in-person Form DS-11 application.

The window matters because renewing by mail is easier. You skip the appointment, the acceptance agent, and the extra $35 facility fee that in-person applicants pay.4U.S. Department of State. Who Can Renew by Mail

To use Form DS-82, all of the following must be true:

  • Your most recent passport was issued when you were 16 or older.
  • Your most recent passport was issued less than 15 years ago.
  • You still have that passport and it isn’t damaged.
  • It’s in your current legal name, or you have documentation of the name change (marriage certificate, court order).

If any of that fails, you’ll need Form DS-11 and an in-person appointment at a passport acceptance facility.3eCFR. 22 CFR 51.21 – Execution of Passport Application Common disqualifiers: the passport was reported lost or stolen, it was issued before you turned 16 (child passports last five years and aren’t eligible for DS-82), or it’s too damaged to submit.

What Goes in the Mail Package

A DS-82 submission includes the completed form, your most recent passport, one 2×2 inch passport photo taken within the last six months, the fee by check or money order payable to “U.S. Department of State,” and any name-change documentation. Who Can Renew Online

Online renewal is the fastest route, with tighter eligibility. You qualify only if:

  • Your passport is expiring within one year or expired less than five years ago.
  • You are 25 or older.
  • You are not changing your name, sex, or other personal information.
  • You have the passport with you, undamaged, not reported lost or stolen.
  • You are in a U.S. state or territory when you submit.
  • You are not traveling internationally for at least six weeks, since only routine processing is available online.

You upload a digital photo, pay by credit or debit card, and keep your current passport during processing instead of mailing it in.6U.S. Department of State. Renew Your Passport Online One catch: online renewal only replaces the type of document you already hold. Switching between a passport book and a passport card, or adding one to the other, requires a mail application.

Fees

Renewal fees are the same online or by mail:

  • Passport book: $130
  • Passport card: $30
  • Both book and card: $160

Expedited processing, available only for mail applications, adds $60. Faster 1-to-3-day delivery of the finished passport adds $22.05. If you fall out of the renewal window and have to file DS-11 in person, the acceptance facility charges an additional $35 on top of the application fee.4U.S. Department of State. Passport Fees

How Long It Takes

As of early 2026, routine processing takes four to six weeks and expedited processing takes two to three weeks. Those figures cover time at the processing center only. The State Department adds an estimated two weeks of mail transit on each end, so a routine mail renewal can realistically run eight to ten weeks from mailbox to arrival.7U.S. Department of State. If You Already Have Travel Booked

If you have international travel within 14 calendar days, or need a foreign visa within 28 calendar days, you can request an appointment at a passport agency for urgent in-person processing.8U.S. Department of State. Make an Appointment at a Passport Agency or Center Appointments go quickly during peak season, so this is not a reliable backup. Once any application is submitted, you can track it on the State Department website.

The short version: don’t plan around a grace period, because there isn’t one. Plan around the renewal window, which gives you five years of easier paperwork after expiration and nothing more.
