Is the Passport Card Sent Separately From the Book?

Yes. If you applied for both, the passport card is sent separately from the book. They travel in different envelopes through different mail services, so they almost never arrive on the same day. The book ships first through a trackable delivery service, and the card follows by First Class Mail with no tracking. A third envelope, containing the original citizenship documents you submitted, arrives later by First Class Mail and can take up to four weeks after the passport itself.¹

Three Envelopes, Three Mailings

When your application covered both documents, plan on three deliveries, not one.

The passport book goes out first through a trackable service. You get a tracking number by email once the status changes to “Mailed,” and that email is the only place the number appears.²

The passport card ships by First Class Mail. There is no tracking, and the State Department does not offer 1-to-3-day delivery for cards, even if you paid for expedited return shipping on the book. The $22.05 fast return option only covers the book, and only to addresses inside the United States.³

Your original citizenship evidence, such as a birth certificate or naturalization certificate, comes back in a third envelope by First Class Mail. That mailing can arrive up to four weeks after your passport book or card.⁴ A gap of several weeks between the passport itself and the return of your birth certificate is normal, not a sign anything went wrong.

If you applied for only the book, you’ll still get two envelopes: the book by trackable delivery, then your citizenship documents later by First Class Mail. A card-only application also produces two envelopes, both by First Class Mail.¹

How Long the Gap Between Book and Card Can Be

Because the two documents use different carriers, one commonly shows up several days before the other. There is no fixed delivery order beyond the general rule that the trackable book tends to move faster than a First Class card.

Overall timing depends on the processing speed you chose. The State Department lists routine service at 4 to 6 weeks and expedited service at 2 to 3 weeks. Neither figure includes mailing. Mail time can add up to two weeks on each end: two weeks for your application to reach the processing center, and two weeks for the finished documents to reach you.³ From the day you drop the application in the mail to the day you have both items in hand, realistic totals are roughly 8 to 10 weeks for routine service and 6 to 7 weeks for expedited.

Tracking Each Piece

You can check the application status online using your last name, date of birth, and the last four digits of your Social Security Number. It can take up to two weeks after you apply before any status appears in the system.²

The status moves through three stages:

In Process: your application is being reviewed at a passport agency or center.
Approved: the review is complete and your passport is being printed.
Mailed: your passport is on its way. If you applied for the book, the tracking number appears in the email status update.

If you provided an email address on your application, you’ll get automatic updates as the status changes. The card has no tracking number at any point; you’ll only see that it has been mailed.²

If One of Them Doesn’t Show Up

Because the book and card travel separately, receiving one and waiting on the other is common and usually resolves on its own within a few days. If more than two weeks have passed since the status showed “Mailed” and a document still hasn’t arrived, call the National Passport Information Center at 1-877-487-2778 (or 1-888-874-7793 for TDD/TTY).²

If a passport truly never arrives, you have 120 days from the issue date to report non-receipt using Form DS-86. That is a hard deadline. After 120 days, you have to reapply from scratch and pay the full fees again. Filing the DS-86 cancels the missing passport so it cannot be used by anyone for travel.¹

The third envelope has its own clock. If your original citizenship document (birth certificate, naturalization certificate) is lost in the mail, you must contact the State Department within 90 days of the date your passport was mailed to request reimbursement for replacing it. You’ll need a receipt showing the replacement cost.⁴

Check Both Documents When They Arrive

As each envelope shows up, look at the name spelling, date of birth, and photo. Small printing or data errors do happen, and catching them early matters.

To fix a printing or data error, submit Form DS-5504 by mail with the incorrect passport, a new photo, and evidence showing the correct information. There is no fee for this correction as long as the passport is still valid. If you report the error within one year of issuance, the replacement gets a full new 10-year validity period. Report it after one year, and the replacement only lasts until the original expiration date.⁵

The same check applies to both the book and the card when each one arrives, since they are printed and mailed on their own schedules.
