Is Social Security Sending Out Extra Money? COLA, Scams, and Back Pay

Social Security is not sending out extra money in 2026 beyond what current law already provides. There is no fourth stimulus check, no special senior bonus, and no new one-time payment for retirees or disability recipients. The only across-the-board increase this year is the 2.8% cost-of-living adjustment that took effect in January, which raised the average retired worker’s monthly payment to roughly $2,071.1Social Security Administration. Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) Information Some people do see a large unexpected deposit, but that is almost always a retroactive benefit or an underpayment correction owed to that individual, not a new payout for everyone.

What the 2026 COLA Actually Adds to Your Check

The 2.8% COLA is a legally required inflation adjustment, not bonus money. It applies to Social Security retirement, survivor, and disability benefits, and to Supplemental Security Income. In dollar terms:

The number is not chosen by the agency. Federal law ties it to the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers, comparing the third-quarter average from this year to the third-quarter average of the last year a COLA took effect. For 2026, that calculation produced 2.8%.4Social Security Administration. Latest Cost-of-Living Adjustment If prices had not risen, there would be no increase and benefits would stay flat, as has happened a few times in recent decades.

Why Your Net Check May Have Gone Up Less Than 2.8%

If your January deposit was bigger than December’s but not by as much as 2.8%, Medicare is the usual reason. Most beneficiaries age 65 and older have their Part B premium pulled straight from their Social Security payment. The standard Part B premium for 2026 is $202.90 per month.5Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. 2026 Medicare Parts A and B Premiums and Deductibles

A federal “hold harmless” rule keeps your net Social Security check from dropping year over year when the Part B increase would otherwise outrun your COLA dollars. So you won’t go backward, but if your monthly benefit is on the smaller side, most of the raise can be absorbed by the premium. No Fourth Stimulus, No Senior Bonus Check

The three rounds of Economic Impact Payments issued between 2020 and 2021 are finished. The IRS has confirmed all first, second, and third payments have been distributed.6Internal Revenue Service. Economic Impact Payments No fourth stimulus payment has been enacted. No $2,000 senior bonus exists.

For any new payment to go out, Congress would need to pass a bill and the President would need to sign it.7Library of Congress. U.S. Constitution – Article I Section 7 Until that happens, the Social Security Administration has no authority to send money beyond what current law provides. Viral posts, texts, and ads promising otherwise are either misinformation or scams.

When a Large Unexpected Deposit Is Legitimate

A big surprise deposit from Social Security is real in some cases. It is not a bonus. It is money you were already owed.

Retroactive Benefits After a Late Application

If you apply for benefits after you were first eligible, the agency can pay you for some months before your application date. Disability benefits, widow or widower benefits based on disability, and certain dependent benefits tied to a disabled worker’s record can be paid retroactively for up to 12 months before the application. Retirement benefits, survivor benefits not based on disability, and parent’s benefits can be paid for up to 6 months before the application.8eCFR. 20 CFR 404.621

These back payments can run into the thousands and are often the reason someone sees a large deposit after a long disability process.

Earnings Record Corrections

The agency also runs internal audits. If an employer reported your wages incorrectly, or a period of work was missing from your record, your benefit gets recalculated and you receive a corrective payment for the underpaid months. If you suspect an error, you can request a formal review or file Form SSA-561 to ask for reconsideration of a determination about your payment amount.9Social Security Administration. Extra Cautions if You Receive SSI

Supplemental Security Income treats lump sums very differently from regular Social Security, and the rules can bite fast.

First, past-due SSI cannot always be paid at once. When back benefits (after any attorney fees and state reimbursements) equal or exceed three times the current maximum monthly SSI payment, the agency must pay in installments. For 2026 that threshold is $2,982 for an individual, or three times $994.10Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 42 USC 1383 – Procedures for Payment of Benefits Above that, the amount is split into up to three installments, six months apart, with the first two each capped at three times the maximum monthly benefit. The full amount can go out at once only if you have a medical condition expected to result in death within 12 months, or if you have become ineligible for SSI and are expected to remain ineligible for at least 12 months.

Second, SSI has strict resource limits: $2,000 for an individual and $3,000 for a couple.11Social Security Administration. 2026 Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) Fact Sheet A back payment sitting in your bank account counts as a resource beginning the month after you receive it. If it pushes you over the limit and you do not spend it down on allowable expenses such as housing, food, medical needs, or debts, you can lose SSI eligibility. Missing that window by even a month can trigger a suspension.

How to Tell an “Extra Payment” Pitch Is a Scam

Messages promising bonus Social Security checks, unclaimed benefits, or a new stimulus round are one of the most common fraud tactics aimed at beneficiaries. The Social Security Administration contacts people through U.S. mail or through the secure my Social Security portal. Legitimate notices include specific details about your record and never ask you to hand over your bank account number, Social Security number, or login credentials by text, email, or phone.

If someone tells you that you qualify for a special payment and just need to “verify” personal information, treat it as a scam. Hang up or delete the message, log in directly at ssa.gov to check your account, and report the contact through the agency’s scam reporting page.12Social Security Administration.
