Is Saturday a Business Day for Banks? Deposits, Holds, and Transfers

Saturday is not a business day for banks. Federal banking rules define business days as Monday through Friday excluding federal holidays, so a deposit, transfer, or payment you initiate on Saturday will not start processing until Monday. Your branch may be open for in-person services, and your mobile app will accept transactions around the clock, but the systems that actually move money between institutions treat Saturday as closed.

What the Federal Rule Actually Says

Regulation CC, at 12 CFR Part 229, controls when your money moves. It defines a business day as any calendar day other than Saturday, Sunday, or a federal holiday.1eCFR. 12 CFR Part 229 – Availability of Funds and Collection of Checks (Regulation CC)

The regulation also distinguishes a business day from a banking day. A banking day is any portion of a business day when the bank is open for substantially all of its functions. Because Saturday is never a business day, it can never be a banking day for fund-availability purposes, even if your branch unlocks its doors. The commentary says this directly: a bank open on Saturday may treat it as a banking day under some state commercial codes, but Saturday is never a banking day for Regulation CC purposes.1eCFR. 12 CFR Part 229 – Availability of Funds and Collection of Checks (Regulation CC)

What Happens When You Deposit on Saturday

Whether you deposit at a teller, an ATM, or through a mobile app on Saturday, your bank records the transaction but treats it as received on the next business day, which is Monday. The availability clock does not start until that Monday.1eCFR. 12 CFR Part 229 – Availability of Funds and Collection of Checks (Regulation CC)

The same rule can snare you on Friday. A bank’s cut-off time at a physical branch cannot be set earlier than 2:00 p.m. For ATMs and off-site locations, the earliest allowable cut-off is noon.2eCFR. 12 CFR 229.19 – Miscellaneous Mobile deposit cut-offs are set by the bank and are not bound by that floor, so your institution may use an earlier or later deadline for phone deposits.3Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. How Long Can a Bank or Credit Union Hold Funds I Deposited? A deposit you push through the app at 9:00 p.m. Friday is usually treated the same as a Saturday deposit: both count as received on Monday.

When Your Check Funds Actually Become Available

The Expedited Funds Availability Act and Regulation CC set the deadlines for when deposited check funds must be released. Those deadlines are counted in business days from the banking day of deposit, and because Saturday is never a banking day, every weekend check deposit starts counting on Monday.

Next-Day Items

Some checks must be available by the next business day after the banking day of deposit. The list includes U.S. Treasury checks, U.S. Postal Service money orders, cashier’s checks, certified checks, and government checks, as long as you deposit them in person into an account in your name. Checks deposited at a branch and drawn on the same bank also qualify if both branches sit in the same check-processing region.4eCFR. 12 CFR 229.10 – Next-Day Availability

For any other check, the bank must still release the first $275 by the next business day.4eCFR. 12 CFR 229.10 – Next-Day Availability Deposit a $5,000 personal check on Saturday, and the banking day is Monday. The bank must make $275 available by Tuesday.

The Standard Schedule

Most other check funds must be fully available by the second business day after the banking day of deposit.5eCFR. 12 CFR 229.12 – Availability Schedule Using the same Saturday example, the full $5,000 would be available by Wednesday.

Longer Holds

Banks can extend these timelines in certain situations. Total check deposits above $6,725 on a single banking day can be held an additional five business days on the amount over that threshold.6Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Availability of Funds and Collection of Checks (Regulation CC) Threshold Adjustments Other triggers include reasonable doubt about collectibility, redeposited items that were previously returned, and emergency conditions. New accounts, defined as those open less than 30 days, face stricter rules of their own.7Federal Reserve Board. A Guide to Regulation CC Compliance

Transfers Initiated on Saturday

The ACH network behind direct deposits, bill payments, and most bank-to-bank transfers runs only on business days. Standard ACH settlement happens at 8:30 a.m. ET on the next banking day,8Federal Reserve Financial Services. FedACH Processing Schedule and same-day ACH is likewise limited to business days.9Nacha. Same Day ACH An ACH transfer you queue up Friday night or anytime Saturday will sit until Monday morning.

Wire transfers follow the same pattern. The Fedwire Funds Service currently operates Monday through Friday from 9:00 p.m. ET the prior day to 7:00 p.m. ET, excluding Federal Reserve holidays. It does not operate on Saturdays.10Federal Register. Federal Reserve Action To Expand Fedwire Funds Service and National Settlement Service Operating Hours A wire submitted Saturday through your bank’s online portal will not settle until Monday. Your banking app may show a “pending” status, but that label only means the request has been recorded; the interbank networks still have to come online for settlement to happen.

The Weekend Exceptions: FedNow and RTP

Two newer networks do run around the clock, every day of the year, and can settle funds between banks instantly, weekends and holidays included.

The Federal Reserve’s FedNow Service is a real-time gross settlement system that processes payments 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, with no planned downtime. Participating banks are expected to make funds immediately available to customers at any hour, and the service uses a seven-day accounting model, so a Saturday transaction settles on Saturday rather than rolling to Monday.11Federal Reserve Banks. FedNow Service Operating Procedures Version 3.2 As of mid-2025, roughly 1,600 financial institutions had signed up for FedNow, though not all have turned it on for every transaction type.

The Clearing House’s Real-Time Payments (RTP) network also runs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Settlement is instant and final at any time, and the network supports payments up to $10 million.12The Clearing House. Real Time Payments

Whether you can actually use FedNow or RTP on a Saturday depends entirely on your bank. Many institutions have not adopted either network, and those that have may limit which transactions move through them. Ask your bank directly if you need to send or receive money over a weekend.

When Holidays Stack onto the Weekend

Because Saturday is already outside the business-day count, a federal holiday falling on Saturday creates no extra delay. Federal Reserve Banks stay open the preceding Friday in that case, so Friday processing is unaffected.13Federal Reserve Financial Services. Holiday Schedules

A holiday on Sunday is different. Under Regulation CC, the following Monday becomes a non-business day.1eCFR. 12 CFR Part 229 – Availability of Funds and Collection of Checks (Regulation CC) A Saturday deposit before that weekend would not be treated as received until Tuesday, and availability counts from there. The same pattern repeats every year with holidays that always fall on Monday, including Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents’ Day, Memorial Day, Labor Day, and Columbus Day: Saturday deposits move to Tuesday processing. Plan around long weekends.

The Overdraft Risk in the Saturday-to-Monday Gap

The lag between weekend activity and Monday processing can cause overdraft trouble. If you deposit on Saturday expecting it to cover a card swipe or an automatic bill that posts over the weekend, you may be caught short. Banks generally post deposits before withdrawals in overnight processing, but no law requires that order.14HelpWithMyBank.gov. Can the Bank Charge an Overdraft Fee While There Is a Deposit Pending?

A deposit made after your bank’s Friday cut-off may be treated as received Monday. If a debit transaction or auto-pay clears over the weekend against your pre-deposit balance, the bank can charge an overdraft or insufficient-funds fee before the deposit is credited.14HelpWithMyBank.gov. Can the Bank Charge an Overdraft Fee While There Is a Deposit Pending? To lower that risk, deposit before the Friday cut-off rather than waiting for Saturday, and leave enough cushion to cover any debits that may post over the weekend.

What’s Changing

The Federal Reserve has announced plans to expand Fedwire Funds Service and National Settlement Service operations from five days a week to six, running Sunday through Friday, including weekday holidays. Saturday was deliberately left out because banks and the Reserve Banks rely on that day for maintenance, testing, and cybersecurity work.10Federal Register. Federal Reserve Action To Expand Fedwire Funds Service and National Settlement Service Operating Hours The expansion will not take effect before 2028 and will be phased in over time.15Federal Reserve Board. Even once implemented, Saturday will remain a non-processing day for Fedwire. ACH and check-clearing timelines under Regulation CC run on their own regulatory track and would need separate updates to change.
