Is Saturday a Business Day for Bank Transfers?

Saturday is not a business day for bank transfers under federal law. The Expedited Funds Availability Act defines a business day as any day other than a Saturday, Sunday, or federal holiday, so a transfer you request on Saturday generally will not start formal processing until Monday.1Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 12 U.S.C. Chapter 41 – Expedited Funds Availability There are real exceptions. Transfers between two accounts at the same bank, payments over the FedNow and RTP real-time networks, and peer-to-peer apps like Zelle can still move money on a Saturday. Everything else waits for the workweek.

Some branches open on Saturday morning, and that creates confusion. Regulation CC, the Federal Reserve rule that carries out the statute, addresses this directly: a Saturday might count as a “banking day” for some in-branch purposes, but it is never a business day for calculating when your funds become available.2eCFR. 12 CFR Part 229 – Availability of Funds and Collection of Checks (Regulation CC) – Section: Banking Day and Business Day Commentary A teller deposit on Saturday morning is legally treated as received the following Monday.1Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 12 U.S.C. When a Saturday Transfer Actually Processes

Money sent to a different bank moves through central clearing systems run by the Federal Reserve, and those systems close for the weekend. Fedwire currently runs Sunday through Friday, opening at 9:00 p.m. Eastern the evening before each business day and closing at 7:00 p.m. Eastern that day.3Federal Register. Federal Reserve Action to Expand Fedwire Funds Service and National Settlement Service Operating Hours From 7:00 p.m. Eastern Friday to 9:00 p.m. Eastern Sunday, no wire can settle.

The Automated Clearing House network runs on a similar schedule. Same-Day ACH has its final Friday settlement window at 4:45 p.m. Eastern, with funds settling by 6:00 p.m. Eastern that day.4Federal Reserve Financial Services. FedACH Processing Schedule The later evening windows available Sunday through Thursday do not run Friday night, so anything submitted after that deadline sits in queue until Monday.

The practical result: an ACH transfer you submit Saturday begins processing Monday and typically arrives Tuesday or Wednesday, since standard ACH takes one to two business days once processing starts.5Nacha. Same-Bank Transfers Move Instantly on Saturday

Transfers between two accounts at the same bank usually bypass the weekend delay because the bank controls both sides of the transaction and can update its own records without routing anything through the Federal Reserve. These transfers are typically credited immediately, weekends included.

Bank of America, as one example, credits transfers between its deposit accounts (checking, savings, and money market) instantly at any time. A Saturday, Sunday, or holiday transfer shows the next business day’s date in the transaction history, but the funds are included in your available balance right away.6Bank of America. Cutoff Times for Deposits, Transfers and Payments Policies vary by institution, but moving money between your own accounts at the same bank is usually the fastest free option over the weekend.

Networks That Do Run on Saturdays

Two newer payment rails now operate around the clock and can settle a transfer between different banks in seconds, weekends and holidays included.

The FedNow Service, launched by the Federal Reserve in 2023, processes and settles payments 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Participating banks must make funds available to recipients immediately after settlement. The per-transaction limit was raised to $10 million in 2025.7Federal Reserve. The RTP network, operated by The Clearing House, also runs 24/7/365 with a per-transaction limit of $10 million.9The Clearing House. Real Time Payments

The catch is participation. Both banks in the transfer must belong to the same network. If either side hasn’t joined, you fall back to ACH or wire and their weekday-only schedule. Ask your bank whether it supports FedNow or RTP for outbound payments.

Peer-to-Peer Apps on the Weekend

Payment apps offer another Saturday option, though the fine print matters.

Zelle transfers to someone already enrolled typically arrive within minutes, weekends included. If the recipient hasn’t registered yet, a hold is placed on your account and the first transfer can take up to two business days after they enroll.10Bank of America. Venmo’s Instant Transfer can push money to an eligible bank account or debit card at any hour, usually within 30 minutes, for a fee of 1.75% of the amount (minimum $0.25, maximum $25).11Venmo. Instant Bank Transfer FAQ

Standard, non-instant transfers out of these apps still ride the ACH network. Choose a free standard transfer on Saturday and the money will not land in your bank account until at least Monday or Tuesday.

Holiday Weekends Push the Delay Further

A federal holiday on Monday extends everything. That Monday is not a business day either, so the next business day becomes Tuesday. A transfer initiated Saturday before a holiday weekend won’t start processing until Tuesday, and a standard ACH transfer may not deliver funds until Wednesday or Thursday.

Regulation CC excludes ten federal holidays from the business day definition. When one of them falls on Sunday, the following Monday is also treated as a non-business day.12eCFR. 12 CFR Part 229 – Availability of Funds and Collection of Checks (Regulation CC) – Section: 229.2 Definitions Bill payments due on a weekend or holiday are typically collected on the next business day, while payroll due on those days is generally paid the prior Friday.5Nacha. Saturday Check Deposits

Depositing a check on Saturday is a separate question from sending money, and the method you choose changes how quickly the funds free up, even though the business-day clock does not start until Monday either way.

A check deposited with a teller follows the bank’s standard availability schedule once Monday arrives. A check deposited at an ATM can face an extra day of hold. Under Regulation CC, certain check types that qualify for next-day availability when handed to a bank employee are treated as second-day items when deposited at an ATM.13Federal Reserve Board. Applying Funds Availability Rules A government check handed to a teller on Saturday (treated as received Monday) is typically available Tuesday; the same check deposited at an ATM might not be fully available until Wednesday.

Mobile deposits taken over the weekend are treated as received on the next business day. Under the Expedited Funds Availability Act, the first $275 of a non-next-day check deposit must be made available by the next business day after the day of deposit.14Federal Reserve Board. A Guide to Regulation CC Compliance The rest follows the bank’s normal hold schedule.

Two exception holds can extend things further. If your total deposits for a single day exceed $6,725, the bank must make the first $6,725 available on its normal schedule but can hold the excess for up to five additional business days. If your account is less than 30 days old, the bank must provide next-day availability only for cash, electronic payments, and the first $6,725 of other next-day items; other check deposits can be held up to nine business days.14Federal Reserve Board. A Guide to Regulation CC Compliance A large check deposited at an ATM on Saturday into a new account could take well over a week to become fully available.

Avoiding Overdraft While You Wait

Weekend processing gaps create a real overdraft risk. Overdraft fees can run around $35 per transaction at many banks.15FDIC.gov. Overdraft and Account Fees If you schedule a bill payment expecting Saturday funds to be available, the payment may hit before the deposit clears.

A few practical moves keep you clear:

  • Move money between your own accounts at the same bank on Saturday for immediate availability.
  • Ask your bank whether it supports FedNow or RTP for inbound payments so weekend transfers from other participating banks arrive in seconds.
  • For external transfers, initiate before your bank’s Friday cutoff. Same-Day ACH has its final Friday settlement window at 4:45 p.m. Eastern.4Federal Reserve Financial Services. FedACH Processing Schedule
  • If you deposit a check over the weekend, schedule dependent bill payments for Tuesday or later.
  • Check your bank’s overdraft policies. Many large banks now offer grace periods, reduced fees, or accounts without overdraft charges.
