REAL ID requirements are now in effect nationwide. Every state, the District of Columbia, and all five U.S. territories issue REAL ID-compliant driver’s licenses and identification cards, and federal enforcement began on May 7, 2025.1Transportation Security Administration. REAL ID Frequently Asked Questions2Federal Register. Minimum Standards for Drivers Licenses and Identification Cards Acceptable by Federal Agencies You need one (or an acceptable substitute) to board a domestic flight, enter most federal facilities, or enter a nuclear power plant. For everything else in daily life, your existing license still works.
When You Actually Need a REAL ID
Federal regulations name exactly three “official purposes” that trigger the REAL ID requirement: boarding a domestic commercial flight, entering a federal facility, and entering a nuclear power plant.3eCFR. 6 CFR Part 37 – Real ID Drivers Licenses and Identification Cards Nothing else does.
At the airport, TSA has been checking for the compliance marking since May 7, 2025.4Transportation Security Administration. Acceptable Identification at the TSA Checkpoint A compliant card carries a gold or black star on its upper portion; a card without that star will not be accepted on its own at a checkpoint.1Transportation Security Administration. REAL ID Frequently Asked Questions Federal facilities covered by the rule include military bases, federal courthouses, and other secure government buildings.
When You Don’t Need One
A REAL ID is not required to drive, cash a check, vote, or apply for Social Security or veterans benefits.5Department of Homeland Security. Real ID Public FAQs A standard, non-compliant driver’s license remains fully valid for operating a vehicle, proving your age, and any other state-level use.6Transportation Security Administration. About REAL ID You also do not need a REAL ID to receive federal benefits.7Department of Homeland Security. ID Requirements for Federal Facilities If you rarely fly and don’t visit federal buildings, you may never need to upgrade.
Documents Acceptable Instead of a REAL ID
Several other IDs work at TSA checkpoints and other official-purpose locations, so if you already carry one of these you don’t need to get a REAL ID at all:
- A valid U.S. passport or U.S. passport card.
- A DHS trusted traveler card — Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI, or FAST.
- A U.S. Department of Defense ID, including dependent cards.
- A permanent resident card (green card).
- An Enhanced Driver’s License or Enhanced ID from a state that issues them.
- A Transportation Worker Identification Credential, Veteran Health Identification Card, HSPD-12 PIV card, U.S. Merchant Mariner Credential, or Employment Authorization Card (I-766).
- A photo ID issued by a federally recognized Tribal Nation, including Enhanced Tribal Cards.
- A foreign government-issued passport.

Documents You Need to Get a REAL ID
Applications require paperwork in three main categories, plus name-change documents if applicable.
Identity and Lawful Status
You need at least one document proving both who you are and that you’re lawfully present. A valid U.S. passport or a certified birth certificate from a state vital records office are the most common choices. Others include a Consular Report of Birth Abroad, a permanent resident card, an unexpired Employment Authorization Document, a Certificate of Naturalization, or a Certificate of Citizenship.8eCFR. 6 CFR 37.11 – Application and Documents the Applicant Must Provide
Social Security Number
Your state must verify your SSN with the Social Security Administration, but a 2020 federal law removed the requirement that states demand a paper document proving it.1Transportation Security Administration. REAL ID Frequently Asked Questions Some states still ask you to bring a Social Security card, W-2, SSA-1099, or pay stub anyway. Check your state motor vehicle agency’s site before you go.
Proof of Address
You must bring at least two separate documents showing your current in-state home address.8eCFR. 6 CFR 37.11 – Application and Documents the Applicant Must Provide Federal rules leave the specifics to each state. Utility bills, lease agreements, mortgage statements, and bank statements are typical. States often require documents to be recent, commonly within the last 60 to 90 days.
Name Change Documents
If your current legal name differs from the name on your identity document, bring proof of each change in between. Marriage certificates, divorce decrees, and court orders are the usual paperwork.1Transportation Security Administration. REAL ID Frequently Asked Questions You only need to bridge the gap between the identity document and your current name, not account for every name you’ve ever used.
How to Apply
You have to apply in person at your state’s motor vehicle agency. It cannot be done online or by mail because a clerk needs to inspect your original documents and take a new photo. Many states require or strongly recommend booking an appointment first.
At the counter, the clerk reviews and scans your originals. Once your documents check out and the fee is paid, most states issue a temporary paper document while the permanent card arrives by mail, typically in two to four weeks. Fees vary by state; some charge the same as a standard license, others add a surcharge.
REAL ID for Non-Citizens
Non-citizens with temporary legal status can get a REAL ID, but it is issued as a limited-term card. Its expiration date cannot extend past the end of your authorized stay. If your status has no set expiration, the card can be issued for up to one year at a time. To renew, you must show current evidence that your lawful status remains in effect or that you continue to qualify.9eCFR. 6 CFR 37.21 – Temporary or Limited-Term Drivers Licenses and Identification Cards Lawful permanent residents use their green card as the identity and status document and are not subject to limited-term restrictions.
How Long a REAL ID Lasts
Federal regulations allow a REAL ID to be valid for up to eight years.3eCFR. 6 CFR Part 37 – Real ID Drivers Licenses and Identification Cards States can set shorter periods under their own licensing rules. When your card nears expiration, some states let you renew online or by mail if nothing has changed; others require another in-person visit.
What Happens If You Show Up to the Airport Without One
Arriving at TSA without a REAL ID or an acceptable alternative doesn’t automatically get you turned away. Starting February 1, 2026, TSA offers a service called ConfirmID: you pay a $45 fee, and TSA attempts to verify your identity through other means.4Transportation Security Administration. Acceptable Identification at the TSA Checkpoint The fee can be paid online before you get to the airport. If TSA can confirm who you are, you continue through screening. If not, you don’t pass the checkpoint.
