Is Klarna Bad for Your Credit Score and Report?

Klarna is not automatically bad for your credit score. Its most popular product, Pay in 4, isn’t reported to the credit bureaus at all, so paying on time won’t help your score and paying on time won’t hurt it either.1Klarna. Credit Score and Credit Checks The damage starts when you fall behind: once an unpaid balance is sent to a collection agency, even a small Klarna debt can leave a negative mark on your credit report for seven years. Whether Klarna helps or hurts you comes down to which product you use and whether you keep up with payments.

Which Klarna Products Show Up on Your Credit Report

Klarna treats its products very differently when it comes to credit reporting, and this is where most of the confusion lives.

Klarna does not report anything to the credit bureaus for these products:1Klarna. Credit Score and Credit Checks

  • Pay in 4, four interest-free installments over six weeks
  • Pay in 30, full payment due within 30 days
  • Pay in full, one-time purchases with no installments
  • Klarna Card, both virtual and physical card activity

None of these appear on your report. Not the on-time payments, not the account itself. You get zero credit-building benefit from paying them perfectly.

Klarna does report its monthly financing product, Pay over time, to TransUnion and Experian. For these longer-term loans, Klarna shares whether you opened the account, whether you’re paying on time, and whether you’ve defaulted.1Klarna. Credit Score and Credit Checks On-time payments on a financing account can build your payment history, which makes up 35% of your FICO score.2myFICO. What’s in Your Credit Score Late payments on that same account hurt it.

The asymmetry is the core issue with Pay in 4. You take on a real financial obligation, but paying it responsibly does nothing for your credit. You only hear from the credit bureaus if things go badly wrong.

Does Klarna Do a Credit Check

Klarna runs a soft credit inquiry when you use Pay in 4, Pay over time, or apply for its credit card.3Klarna. Does Klarna Perform a Credit Check A soft pull doesn’t touch your score. Other lenders can’t see it when they pull your report, so there’s no penalty for checking whether you qualify.

That’s a meaningful difference from applying for a traditional credit card or personal loan, which usually triggers a hard inquiry. According to FICO, a single hard inquiry typically costs fewer than five points.4myFICO. Do Credit Inquiries Lower Your FICO Score Hard inquiries stay visible for two years, though their scoring impact fades well before that.5Experian. Hard Inquiry vs Soft Inquiry: What’s the Difference Signing up for Klarna’s standard products won’t ding your score the way opening a new credit card would.

How Missed Klarna Payments Damage Your Credit

Klarna charges a late fee of up to $7 for each missed Pay in 4 installment. That fee doesn’t show up on your credit report, but it increases what you owe and makes default more likely. A $100 purchase split into four payments can grow to $121 if you miss three installments. Not catastrophic on its own, but it adds up across multiple orders.

If you stop paying entirely, the account typically goes into default after 60 to 90 days. Klarna may then transfer or sell the debt to a third-party collection agency, and the collector can report the delinquency to the credit bureaus. That’s when the real damage lands.

A collection entry is one of the most severe negative marks a credit report can carry. Depending on your starting score, a single collection can drop it by 50 to 100 points or more. Someone with an otherwise clean report in the mid-700s feels the impact harder than someone who already has negative marks. Collections stay on your report for seven years from the date of the original missed payment, whether or not you eventually pay.6TransUnion. How Long Do Collections Stay on Your Credit Report A $40 unpaid Klarna balance gets the same seven-year treatment as a $4,000 credit card default.

Overdrafts from Automatic Payments

Klarna pulls installment payments automatically from your linked debit card or bank account. If your balance is too low when a payment hits, your bank may charge an overdraft or non-sufficient funds fee on top of Klarna’s late fee.7Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. You Have Protections When It Comes to Automatic Debit Payments From Your Account The bank charges you, Klarna charges you, and the original purchase keeps getting more expensive. Keeping a buffer in your checking account or tracking payment dates manually is the simplest defense.

How Klarna Affects Mortgage and Car Loan Applications

Even when Klarna balances don’t appear on your credit report, they can still affect your ability to get a mortgage or car loan. Lenders reviewing your finances look at bank statements and see recurring Klarna withdrawals. Those payments count as debt obligations when calculating your debt-to-income ratio.

Federal rules require mortgage lenders to verify that you can repay a loan before approving it, and to consider your income, existing debts, and other obligations during that review.8Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Ability-to-Repay/Qualified Mortgage Rule There is no single regulatory debt-to-income cutoff that applies to all mortgages, but many lenders set internal limits in the low-to-mid 40% range.9Federal Register. Qualified Mortgage Definition Under the Truth in Lending Act Regulation Z General QM Loan Definition Several active Klarna plans eat into the room you have under that ceiling.

An underwriter seeing multiple buy now, pay later transactions on your bank statements may also read into the pattern. A habit of splitting routine purchases into installments can signal cash-flow stress, which makes lenders cautious even when the dollar amounts are small. If you’re planning to apply for a mortgage or auto loan in the next few months, clearing out active Klarna balances beforehand removes a potential complication.

Will Klarna Ever Count Toward Your Credit Score

Right now, none of the three major credit bureaus feed buy now, pay later account data into standard FICO score calculations. Even when a bureau has BNPL data on file, current scoring models ignore it.10myFICO. How Will a Buy Now Pay Later Account Impact My FICO Scores Your Pay in 4 history is essentially invisible to the algorithm.

That’s starting to shift. FICO has developed a newer model called FICO Score 10T, which uses trended credit data and is the first FICO score designed to incorporate buy now, pay later information. The model aggregates short-term loans to reflect responsible borrowing without penalizing consumers for having multiple small loans.11FICO Score. Innovation If lenders adopt it widely, consistent on-time Klarna payments could eventually help your score rather than sit invisibly. Adoption is slow, though. Most lenders still use older FICO versions, and the timeline for widespread use of FICO 10T remains unclear.

What to Do If You’re Falling Behind on Klarna

Klarna offers a financial hardship program for customers struggling to keep up. Through the app or website you can select an unpaid purchase, report a problem, and describe your situation. Klarna will review your finances and offer repayment plan options based on what you can afford.12Klarna. Financial Hardship Support Reaching out before you miss a payment is far better than ignoring the problem. Once the balance moves to collections, Klarna no longer controls what happens to it.

If a balance has already gone to collections, contact the collection agency directly to negotiate. Many collectors will accept a lump sum for less than the full balance, especially on small debts where chasing the full amount isn’t worth their time. Get any settlement agreement in writing before you pay. Paying a collection account doesn’t remove it from your credit report; the entry will show as “paid” instead of “unpaid,” which looks better to future lenders but still stays on your report for the remainder of the seven-year window.
