Yes, January 1 is a bank holiday. New Year’s Day is one of the eleven federal public holidays,1Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 5 USC 6103 – Holidays and the Federal Reserve closes its payment systems that day,2Federal Reserve. K.8 – Holidays Observed by the Federal Reserve System 2026-2030 so nearly every bank branch in the country closes with it. In 2026, January 1 falls on a Thursday; branches reopen Friday, January 2.
What’s Closed and What Still Works
Branch lobbies and drive-throughs are closed. Phone lines at many banks run on reduced staffing or route to automated systems. The Federal Reserve’s administrative offices are shut, and because the Fed is the backbone for moving money between banks, commercial banks have little reason to open their doors.2Federal Reserve. Your everyday digital tools keep working. ATMs dispense cash, take deposits, and show balances. Mobile apps and online banking portals let you check accounts, review transactions, and move money between your own accounts at the same bank. Transfers between two accounts you hold at the same institution usually post right away. The catch is that anything crossing from one bank to another follows the holiday processing timeline.
Two newer payment systems do not pause for the holiday. The Federal Reserve’s FedNow Service runs 24 hours a day, every day of the year, and is specifically excluded from Fed holiday shutdowns.3Federal Reserve. About RTP Both require that your bank and the recipient’s bank participate.
Peer-to-peer apps are a mixed picture. Venmo’s instant transfer to an eligible bank account or debit card works 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.6Venmo. Instant Bank Transfer FAQ A standard Venmo bank transfer takes one to three business days, and holidays don’t count toward that window.7Venmo. Standard Bank Transfers FAQ Zelle will let you send on the holiday, but settlement between banks can lag a day or two compared with a normal weekday.
How Transfers and Deposits Are Delayed
The two main interbank systems, ACH and the Fedwire Funds Service, do not run on federal holidays. Fedwire treats every calendar day that isn’t a Fed-observed holiday as a business day, and January 1 is observed.8Federal Reserve Financial Services. Wholesale Services Operating Hours Anything you initiate through those rails on New Year’s Day sits pending until the next business day.
- Payroll scheduled to hit on January 1 may be credited a day early (December 31) or a day late (January 2), depending on when your employer submitted the batch.
- Electronic bill payments scheduled for January 1 won’t leave your account until January 2 at the earliest.
- Outgoing wires queue up and process on the next Fedwire business day.
- Paper checks deposited on the holiday are treated as deposited on the next business day for clearing purposes.
Hold times at the ATM follow the same logic. Under Regulation CC, January 1 is explicitly not a business day.9eCFR. Part 229 Availability of Funds and Collection of Checks (Regulation CC) A deposit made that day counts as received on the next business day, and the availability clock starts from there. A cash deposit at your own bank’s ATM on Thursday, January 1, 2026 would count as received Friday, January 2, with full availability by the second business day after that. The first $275 of a check deposit is generally available the first business day after the deemed deposit date, unless the deposit was made at an ATM your bank doesn’t operate.10Federal Reserve. A Guide to Regulation CC Compliance If you need funds the same day, cash from an ATM or an instant transfer through FedNow, RTP, or a debit-card-based app is more reliable than depositing a check.
If a Bill Is Due on January 1
Credit card and other open-end credit payments get a specific protection. If your card issuer does not accept or receive mailed payments on the due date, a mailed payment that arrives the next business day cannot be treated as late.11Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Regulation Z 1026.10 – Payments The protection is about mail. If the issuer accepts electronic or phone payments on the due date itself, you are still expected to pay by 5:00 p.m. on the due date through one of those channels.
If a creditor fails to credit a timely payment, it must reverse any finance charges or late fees imposed during that cycle. The simplest way to avoid the question is to pay electronically on December 31.
When January 1 Falls on a Weekend
This doesn’t apply in 2026, but matters for future years. When the holiday falls on a Sunday, all Federal Reserve offices close the following Monday, and most banks follow suit. When it falls on a Saturday, Federal Reserve Banks and their branches stay open the preceding Friday, though the Board of Governors closes.2Federal Reserve. K.8 – Holidays Observed by the Federal Reserve System 2026-2030 Federal employees on a Monday-to-Friday schedule observe the preceding Friday as their holiday.1Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 5 USC 6103 – Holidays Some private banks keep branches open with limited hours that Friday; call ahead if it matters.
The Stock Market Closes Too
The New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq close on New Year’s Day as well. The NYSE lists Thursday, January 1, 2026 as a market holiday.12NYSE. Holidays and Trading Hours You can place orders through your brokerage, but they will queue for execution when markets reopen January 2. When the holiday lands on a Saturday, the NYSE simply skips the closure that year rather than substituting a different day, which differs from the federal employee rule.
