Hyperthyroidism is not automatically considered a disability under any U.S. program, but it can qualify you for benefits or legal protections depending on how much the condition limits what you can do. The Social Security Administration, the Department of Veterans Affairs, and the Americans with Disabilities Act each use a different framework, and none of them turns on the diagnosis alone. What matters in every case is functional impact: how the condition, its complications, and its treatment affect your ability to work and manage daily life.
Social Security Disability and Hyperthyroidism
The SSA removed all dedicated endocrine disorder listings from its Blue Book on April 8, 2011, after determining the listings “no longer accurately identified people who are disabled.”1Social Security Administration. SSR 14-3p: Evaluating Cases Involving Endocrine Disorders You can still receive Social Security Disability Insurance or Supplemental Security Income for hyperthyroidism, but your claim will be evaluated based on the complications the condition causes in other body systems rather than on the thyroid diagnosis itself.2Social Security Administration. Section 9.00 Endocrine Disorders – Adult
Which Complications the SSA Evaluates
Under Section 9.00 of the Blue Book, thyroid-related impairments are routed to the listing for whichever body system is affected:2Social Security Administration. Section 9.00 Endocrine Disorders – Adult
- Cardiovascular problems such as arrhythmias, atrial fibrillation, and other cardiac dysfunction are evaluated under Section 4.00.
- Significant unintentional weight loss is evaluated under the digestive listings in Section 5.00.
- Strokes from hypertensive cerebrovascular events are evaluated under the neurological listings in Section 11.00.
- Cognitive limitations, mood disorders, and anxiety linked to the thyroid condition are evaluated under the mental disorders listings in Section 12.00.
To meet the arrhythmia listing at Section 4.05, for example, the arrhythmias generally must be documented as recurring at least three times within a 12-month period and remain uncontrolled despite standard treatment.3Social Security Administration. Section 4.00 Cardiovascular System – Adult
The Treatment Hurdle
The SSA’s position is that treatment, whether thyroid-suppression medication, radioactive iodine therapy, or surgery, generally controls symptoms within 12 months.1Social Security Administration. SSR 14-3p: Evaluating Cases Involving Endocrine Disorders That expectation makes lasting disability harder to establish.
Treatment itself, however, can create new problems. Radioactive iodine destroys overactive thyroid tissue and frequently results in hypothyroidism that requires lifelong hormone replacement. Surgery carries a recovery period and the same need for permanent supplemental hormones.4CCK Law. Thyroid Disorders and Long-Term Disability Radioactive iodine can also cause chronic dry mouth, changes in taste and smell, and prolonged fatigue lasting up to a year.5Cancer Research UK. After Radioactive Iodine Treatment When treatment produces complications such as nerve damage, heart disease, or persistent cognitive effects, those complications can themselves form the basis of a claim.
Residual Functional Capacity
Most hyperthyroidism claimants will not neatly meet the criteria of any Blue Book listing. In that situation, the SSA moves to a residual functional capacity assessment, which measures the most you can still do despite your limitations, function by function. The RFC covers physical capacities like sitting, standing, walking, and lifting, and nonexertional ones like concentration, responding to supervision, and tolerating environmental conditions. Adjudicators must consider limitations from every impairment, including ones that would not be severe in isolation but become significant when combined.6Social Security Administration. DI 24510.006 Residual Functional Capacity Assessment
This is where hyperthyroidism claims are often won or lost. Fatigue, tremors, anxiety, and cognitive slowing may individually fall short of a listed impairment, yet together prevent sustained full-time work. The RFC must be supported by medical records, lab findings, reported daily activities, and the effects of treatment, including side effects.6Social Security Administration. DI 24510.006 Residual Functional Capacity Assessment
Evidence You Need
Your hyperthyroidism must be established as a “medically determinable impairment” through objective medical evidence, not just your reported symptoms. That evidence includes clinical signs such as tremors, tachycardia, exophthalmos, and goiter; laboratory findings showing thyroid hormone levels; and documentation from treating physicians.1Social Security Administration. SSR 14-3p: Evaluating Cases Involving Endocrine Disorders The SSA also weighs the combined effects of hyperthyroidism with any other impairments you have.
If Your Social Security Claim Is Denied
About three out of ten initial applications are approved. Denied claimants have four levels of appeal, each with a 60-day deadline to move to the next:7Social Security Administration. Understanding Supplemental Security Income – Appeals
- Reconsideration by a new examiner and medical team. Average wait around 241 days; reversal rate around 16%.8AARP. How to Appeal a Benefits Decision
- Hearing before an administrative law judge. Wait times have ranged from 6 to 17 months, with approval rates averaging around 50% since 2020.8AARP. How to Appeal a Benefits Decision
- Appeals Council review. Approves benefits in about 1% of cases and sends another 12% back for further review.8AARP. How to Appeal a Benefits Decision
- Civil action in U.S. District Court, filed within 60 days of the Appeals Council’s decision.7Social Security Administration. Understanding Supplemental Security Income – Appeals
The ALJ hearing is where many thyroid-related claims are decided, because it is the first stage where you can present testimony in detail about how symptoms affect daily functioning.
VA Disability Ratings for Veterans
Veterans who developed hyperthyroidism during or as a result of military service may receive a VA disability rating. Hyperthyroidism, including Graves’ disease, is rated under Diagnostic Code 7900.9Cornell Law Institute. 38 CFR § 4.119 – Schedule of Ratings, Endocrine System
Under the current schedule, which took effect December 10, 2017, the VA assigns a 30% rating for the first six months after initial diagnosis. After that six-month period, the condition is rated based on whatever residual effects or treatment complications remain, using the diagnostic code for the affected body system. Hyperthyroid heart disease is evaluated separately under Diagnostic Code 7008, and eye manifestations of Graves’ disease such as double vision or reduced visual acuity are rated under their own codes.9Cornell Law Institute. 38 CFR § 4.119 – Schedule of Ratings, Endocrine System
In a 2023 Board of Veterans’ Appeals decision, a Vietnam veteran was granted service connection for a thyroid disorder after an endocrinologist opined that his Graves’ disease and resulting hypothyroidism from treatment were related to herbicide agent exposure during service. The Board credited the physician’s explanation and resolved reasonable doubt in the veteran’s favor.10VA Board of Veterans’ Appeals. Citation Nr. A23001692
Workplace Protections Under the ADA
The Americans with Disabilities Act does not keep a list of qualifying conditions. You are covered if you have a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities, have a record of such an impairment, or are regarded as having one.11EEOC. The ADA: Your Employment Rights as an Individual With a Disability Whether hyperthyroidism qualifies depends on how it affects you personally.
Hyperthyroidism can produce fatigue, muscle weakness, heat sensitivity, tremors, anxiety, and sleep problems, symptoms that may substantially limit activities like concentrating, walking, or performing manual tasks.12JAN (Job Accommodation Network). Thyroid Disorders When those limitations rise to the level of a substantial impairment, you can request reasonable accommodations from your employer. Employers must provide them unless doing so would cause undue hardship.11EEOC. The ADA: Your Employment Rights as an Individual With a Disability
The Job Accommodation Network, a service of the U.S. Department of Labor, suggests accommodations that fit specific symptoms. For fatigue and reduced stamina, flexible schedules, telework, periodic rest breaks, and ergonomic workstation setups. For tremors, alternative input devices such as modified keyboards or mice, and speech recognition software. For heat sensitivity, fans, portable air conditioners, cooling clothing, and modified break schedules.12JAN (Job Accommodation Network). Thyroid Disorders For cognitive and stress-related difficulties common with Graves’ disease, noise-canceling headsets, job coaching, flexible scheduling, and telework options.13JAN (Job Accommodation Network). Private Long-Term Disability Insurance
Private long-term disability policies and plans governed by the Employee Retirement Income Security Act evaluate thyroid claims based on the plan’s own definition of disability. Most policies use one of two standards: “own occupation,” meaning you cannot perform the duties of your current job, or “any occupation,” meaning you cannot perform any job for which you are reasonably qualified. The “any occupation” standard is far harder to meet.
Insurers commonly deny thyroid claims for insufficient medical evidence, particularly when lab results do not clearly track the severity of reported symptoms. Fatigue, cognitive impairment, and anxiety are subjective and hard to prove without supporting documentation such as functional capacity evaluations or neuropsychological testing.4CCK Law. Thyroid Disorders and Long-Term Disability Insurers also argue that periods of improvement demonstrate an ability to work, and gaps in treatment can be used against you.
For ERISA-governed plans the rules are stricter in two important ways: missing a filing deadline can permanently forfeit your rights, and if the case reaches court, you generally cannot introduce new evidence that was not in the original administrative record.4CCK Law. Thyroid Disorders and Long-Term Disability Every relevant medical document needs to be in the file during the initial claim and administrative appeal.
How Hyperthyroidism Actually Affects Work
Research supports the idea that hyperthyroidism has a real, measurable impact on employment. One study found that hyperthyroidism impaired work ability in roughly one-third of affected patients and that those patients faced a significantly higher risk of long-term sick leave than the general population, particularly in the first year after diagnosis. Patients with Graves’ disease who also developed thyroid-associated eye disease showed an even higher risk of sick leave and work disability, especially when double vision was involved.14National Library of Medicine. Thyroid Disease and Work Disability
The symptoms most relevant to an inability to work include rapid or irregular heartbeat, which can progress to atrial fibrillation and congestive heart failure; anxiety, irritability, and depression that impair concentration; muscle weakness and fatigue during ordinary activities; hand tremors; and Graves’ eye disease, which can cause double vision, light sensitivity, and in severe cases vision loss.15Mayo Clinic. Hyperthyroidism – Symptoms and Causes Fatigue on its own has been identified as a significant predictor of unemployment and impaired work ability across thyroid disease patients.14National Library of Medicine. Thyroid Disease and Work Disability
One Boundary Worth Knowing
Hyperthyroidism itself does not receive expedited processing at the SSA. Thyroid cancer is included in the Compassionate Allowances program, which fast-tracks claims for conditions the agency considers obviously disabling, but no other thyroid-related condition appears on that list.16Social Security Administration. Compassionate Allowances Conditions If your hyperthyroidism stems from or coexists with thyroid cancer, the cancer diagnosis may offer a more direct path to benefits.
