Is Gold a Liquid Asset? Taxes, 1099-B, and IRA Rules

Gold is a liquid asset, but it sits a step below cash, money market funds, and publicly traded stocks. How quickly you can turn it into spendable money depends on what form you hold. Shares of a gold ETF sell in seconds during market hours and settle the next business day. Physical coins and bars take longer, cost more to convert, and come with a higher tax rate than most other investments when you sell at a profit.

How Quickly Gold Converts to Cash

The form of gold you own drives everything about the timeline.

Gold ETF Shares

Investors who hold gold through funds like SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) experience liquidity comparable to owning a stock. Shares are backed by physical bullion and trade on the New York Stock Exchange during the core session from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. ET.1NYSE. Trading Information Your broker executes the sale electronically, and proceeds settle in your account the next business day under standard T+1 rules.2U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. New T+1 Settlement Cycle – What Investors Need To Know Moving the money from your brokerage to your checking account typically adds another one to two business days by electronic transfer.

Physical Bars and Bullion Coins

Selling American Eagles, Gold Buffaloes, or cast bars requires retrieving the metal, finding a buyer, and often shipping the item. A local coin shop can pay you the same day for smaller quantities. You will receive less than spot price, though. Dealer spreads generally run 2 to 5 percent above spot for standard bars and 3 to 8 percent for popular one-ounce coins, depending on market conditions.3LBMA. About LBMA Daily Auction Prices

Shipping to a national buyer or refinery adds several days for transit, and the buyer may verify purity before wiring payment. USPS Registered Mail, the standard method for precious metals, caps insurance at $50,000 per package.4Postal Explorer. 503 Extra Services Larger shipments have to be split across multiple packages or covered by private courier insurance, and Registered Mail has to be handed to a postal employee in person rather than dropped in a mailbox.

Numismatic and Collectible Coins

Rare or collectible gold coins are the least liquid form of gold. Value depends on scarcity, condition, and collector demand, and premiums can exceed 30 percent above the metal’s melt value. Realizing that premium usually means working through auction houses or waiting for the right collector. If you need cash quickly, you may only recover the underlying gold value, which makes numismatic coins a poor choice for anyone prioritizing liquidity.

What the IRS Takes When You Sell

The IRS classifies gold as a collectible, whether you hold physical bars, coins, or ETF shares backed by bullion. Long-term gains on collectibles are taxed at a maximum federal rate of 28 percent, higher than the 20 percent top rate on most long-term capital gains from stocks or bonds.5Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 409, Capital Gains and Losses If your ordinary income rate is below 28 percent, you pay at your ordinary rate. Gold held one year or less is taxed as a short-term gain at your regular income tax rate.

Your taxable gain is the sale price minus your cost basis, which includes what you originally paid plus any dealer premiums and commissions. Keep purchase receipts, because dealers do not always track your basis for you.

Inherited Gold

Gold you inherit generally receives a stepped-up basis equal to the fair market value on the original owner’s date of death. Appreciation during the decedent’s lifetime is never taxed. You only owe capital gains tax on the difference between the stepped-up value and your eventual sale price, so accurate documentation of the date-of-death value directly reduces your tax bill.

Reporting That Can Surprise Sellers

Two federal reporting rules touch ordinary gold transactions.

Form 1099-B on Sales

Dealers must file Form 1099-B on certain precious metals sales, but the threshold is narrower than many sellers assume. A sale is reportable only if the gold is in a form that satisfies a CFTC-approved regulated futures contract and the quantity meets or exceeds that contract’s minimum delivery size. For qualifying gold coins, the current minimum is 25 coins, so selling 24 or fewer in a 24-hour period does not trigger a filing.6Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 1099-B (2026) Sales to a single customer within a 24-hour window are aggregated. Whether or not a 1099-B is filed, you still owe tax on any capital gain and must report it on your return.

Form 8300 on Cash Purchases

Any business that receives more than $10,000 in cash in a single transaction, or in related transactions, must file Form 8300 with the IRS and FinCEN.7Internal Revenue Service. Form 8300 and Reporting Cash Payments of Over $10,000 This applies when a dealer takes cash for gold, and structuring a purchase into smaller amounts to stay under the threshold is a separate federal offense.

Gold Priced at the LBMA Benchmark

The global reference price for gold is the LBMA Gold Price, set in U.S. dollars per troy ounce and published twice daily.8LBMA. LBMA Gold Price FAQs For financial statements or estate valuations, multiply the weight of your holdings in troy ounces by the LBMA price at the close of the reporting period. Physical gold should be valued at the underlying metal content only, without dealer premiums or numismatic markups.

Gold in an IRA Is Not a Liquidity Backstop

Gold can be held inside a self-directed IRA, but it does not function as a source of quick cash. Permitted holdings include U.S. gold coins in one-ounce, half-ounce, quarter-ounce, and tenth-ounce denominations minted by the Treasury, along with certain bullion meeting a minimum fineness of 99.5 percent. American Gold Eagles qualify despite their 22-karat purity because of their government backing.9Internal Revenue Service. Publication 590-B (2025), Distributions from Individual Retirement Arrangements (IRAs)

The gold has to remain in the possession of the IRA’s custodian. Taking personal delivery of coins or bars from an IRA is treated as a distribution, which triggers income tax and a 10 percent early withdrawal penalty if you are under 59½.9Internal Revenue Service. Publication 590-B (2025), Distributions from Individual Retirement Arrangements (IRAs) Approved depository storage typically runs $100 to $300 per year. Selling requires coordinating with the custodian, which adds processing time, and any distribution creates a tax event. If you want gold you can turn into cash on short notice, hold it outside a retirement account.
