Yes, Friday is a business day for banks in the United States. Federally regulated banks process deposits, transfers, and payments on Fridays the same way they do Monday through Thursday. What makes Friday different is what comes right after it: the weekend. A transaction that clears the Friday cutoff moves normally, but anything submitted late gets pushed to Monday, and the gap can stretch fund availability by two calendar days or more compared to a midweek deposit.
When Friday Is Not a Business Day
Under Regulation CC, the federal rule governing check processing and fund availability, a business day is any calendar day except Saturday, Sunday, and federal legal holidays.1eCFR. 12 CFR 229.2 – Definitions A Friday that lands on a federal holiday drops off the calendar for banking purposes, and no interbank processing happens regardless of whether an ATM stays lit or a branch door opens.2Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 5 USC 6103 – Holidays
Three Fridays in 2026 close the banking system:
- Friday, June 19 — Juneteenth National Independence Day
- Friday, July 3 — observed closure for Independence Day, which falls on Saturday, July 4
- Friday, December 25 — Christmas Day
The July 3 closure follows the Saturday observance rule: when a holiday falls on a Saturday, banks close the preceding Friday.3Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis. Federal Reserve Bank Holiday Schedule 2026 Any deposit or transfer you initiate on one of these Fridays waits until Monday to begin processing.
One more wrinkle worth knowing: a branch running reduced Friday hours might not qualify that day as a banking day for your specific location, even though it counts as a business day on the calendar.4FDIC. Expedited Funds Availability Act The availability clock for deposits ties to banking days at your particular branch, so an early-closing location can effectively push a deposit’s start date to the next full day of operations.
Cutoff Times That Turn Friday Into Monday
Every bank sets a daily cutoff hour. Anything received after it counts as if you submitted it the next business day. On a Friday, that next business day is Monday, so missing the cutoff by even a minute costs you an entire weekend.
Federal rules set floors on how early a bank can place its cutoff. For deposits made in person at a branch, the cutoff cannot be earlier than 2:00 p.m. For deposits at ATMs or other non-branch locations, the floor is noon.5Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. How Long Can a Bank or Credit Union Hold Funds I Deposited Actual cutoffs vary:
- In-branch teller deposits usually cut off between 2:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. local time.
- ATM cutoffs often match branch hours but can be as early as noon at off-site machines.6HelpWithMyBank.gov. What Is the Cut-Off Time for Deposits
- Mobile check deposits stretch latest, with some large banks accepting them as late as 8:00 or 9:00 p.m. ET and still crediting the same business day.
Check your bank’s specific cutoff before assuming. It appears in your account agreement, on ATM screens, and posted near the teller window.
How Friday Deposits Become Available
What you deposit, and how you deposit it, determines how quickly you can spend the money. Regulation CC sets maximum hold periods based on deposit type. Saturday and Sunday never count toward those periods.
Cash Deposits on Friday
Cash handed to a bank employee before the Friday cutoff must be available by the next business day, which means Monday.7eCFR. 12 CFR Part 229 – Availability of Funds and Collection of Checks Cash pushed into an ATM or drop box instead gets an extra day: the second business day after deposit, so Tuesday.
Check Deposits on Friday
Checks follow a tiered schedule. Low-risk items — government checks, cashier’s checks, and checks drawn on your own bank — qualify for next-business-day availability. A Friday deposit becomes available Monday.8eCFR. 12 CFR 229.12 – Availability Schedule
Most personal and business checks deposited on Friday must be available by the second business day after deposit, meaning Tuesday. These are maximum hold times; many banks release funds sooner for established accounts.
Friday Deposits After the Cutoff
If you deposit after the Friday cutoff, the bank treats it as a Monday deposit. A local check dropped off Friday evening might not clear until Wednesday. A Friday-night ATM cash deposit could sit unavailable until Wednesday as well, because the non-employee cash rule adds a second business day to the Monday start.
Situations That Extend the Hold Further
Even a well-timed Friday deposit can face a longer hold in specific circumstances.
Large Deposits
When total checks deposited on a single banking day exceed $6,725, the bank must release the first $6,725 under its normal schedule but can hold the excess for additional business days.9Federal Reserve. A Guide to Regulation CC Compliance For a Friday deposit, those extra hold days all fall during the following week.
New Accounts
Accounts less than 30 days old face the tightest rules. Certain low-risk checks get next-day availability on the first $6,725, but amounts above that can be held up to nine business days.7eCFR. 12 CFR Part 229 – Availability of Funds and Collection of Checks For ordinary personal checks deposited to a new account, Regulation CC sets no specific maximum hold period. If you just opened an account and need Friday deposit funds quickly, ask the bank before you deposit.
ACH, Wires, and Instant Payments on Friday
Non-deposit transactions run on different rails, each with its own Friday timing.
Standard ACH. Payroll direct deposits, recurring payments, and bank-to-bank transfers usually run through the ACH network. A standard ACH credit submitted before roughly 4:00 p.m. ET on Friday typically posts Monday, the next business day. Employers often submit payroll files a day or two ahead of the intended pay date, which is why a Friday paycheck usually lands Friday morning rather than Monday. If a submission slips to Friday itself, the deposit lands Monday.
Same-day ACH. Transfers initiated before the same-day deadline on Friday clear and post to the recipient’s account by end of day Friday.
Fedwire. The Federal Reserve’s Fedwire Funds Service operates Monday through Friday, opening at 9:00 p.m. ET the prior evening and closing at 7:00 p.m. ET.10Federal Register. Federal Reserve Action To Expand Fedwire Funds Service and National Settlement Service Operating Hours A wire sent Friday before your bank’s internal wire deadline (usually earlier than Fedwire’s 7:00 p.m. close) settles the same day with finality. Fedwire does not operate on weekends or Federal Reserve holidays.
Instant payments. Two networks run 24/7/365, including Friday nights and weekends. The RTP network from The Clearing House supports transactions up to $10 million and settles in seconds with finality.11The Clearing House. Real Time Payments The Federal Reserve’s FedNow service offers the same 24/7 settlement. Both banks in the transaction need to participate in the same network for these to work.
Avoiding Weekend Float Problems
The Friday-to-Monday gap is where overdrafts cluster. A check you deposit Friday afternoon may not clear until Tuesday, but a debit card purchase or scheduled bill payment can hit your account instantly. If your available balance doesn’t reflect the difference, you can overdraft over the weekend without seeing it until Monday.
A few habits worth keeping:
- Deposit early on Friday. Beating the cutoff starts the availability clock Friday rather than Monday, buying you a full business day.
- Don’t spend against pending deposits. The app might show a pending balance, but that money isn’t yours until the hold lifts. Schedule payments against your available balance.
- Time bill payments for midweek. If a payment is due Saturday or Sunday, most creditors apply it Monday. Submitting by Thursday gives ACH a full day to deliver before the weekend.
- Watch the three 2026 holiday Fridays. Each stretches a two-day gap into three. A Thursday afternoon deposit before a holiday Friday won’t begin processing until Monday.
Friday functions as a completely normal banking day, but the weekend sitting right behind it makes Friday timing more consequential than any other weekday. A midweek deposit gives you a next-day cushion. A Friday deposit gives you a two-day wait at minimum, and longer if the cutoff has passed or an extended hold applies.
