Is Cash App FDIC Insured? Limits, Exclusions, and Savings

Yes, money held in a Cash App balance can be FDIC insured up to $250,000, but only through Cash App’s partner bank and only if certain conditions are met. Cash App is not itself a bank and cannot insure your funds directly. The insurance passes through from an FDIC-member partner bank, currently disclosed as Sutton Bank, and it applies only if your account is linked to an active Cash Card or is a Sponsored Account. Cryptocurrency and stocks bought through the app are not covered at all.1Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. How the Coverage Actually Works

Cash App is a financial technology company, not a federally or state-chartered bank. To give customers deposit insurance, it holds cash balances in pooled accounts at FDIC-insured partner banks. The FDIC then treats the underlying funds as belonging to individual customers for insurance purposes. This arrangement is called pass-through deposit insurance, and it exists under the same federal framework that insures deposits at any member bank.2Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 12 USC 1811 Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation

The partner bank identified in Cash App’s direct deposit account details is Sutton Bank.3Cash App. Direct Deposit Account Details Insurance is triggered by the failure of that bank, not by anything happening at Cash App itself. That distinction matters, and it’s the source of most misunderstandings about how safe Cash App money actually is.

What You Need to Qualify for Coverage

Simply having a Cash App account is not enough. According to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, a Cash App balance is eligible for pass-through FDIC coverage only if the account is linked to a Cash App prepaid card (the Cash Card) or if the account sponsors or is a Sponsored Account.1Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. If you use Cash App only for peer-to-peer transfers and never activate a Cash Card, your balance may not be classified as a covered deposit. Activating the Cash Card and completing identity verification are the practical steps that connect your funds to the partner bank’s insurance.

The $250,000 Limit and How It Aggregates

The standard maximum FDIC deposit insurance amount is $250,000 per depositor, per insured bank, per ownership category. That figure is set by federal statute.4Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 12 USC 1821 Insurance Funds

That limit is not $250,000 per Cash App account. It applies to your combined deposits at the partner bank. If you already hold a personal savings account directly at Sutton Bank and also carry a Cash App balance routed to Sutton Bank, the FDIC adds them together. Anything over $250,000 in the same ownership category is uninsured. Most users are nowhere near that ceiling, but anyone who happens to use the same bank both directly and through Cash App should know it.

What Is Not FDIC Insured on Cash App

Deposit insurance covers your cash balance. Two other things you can hold on the platform sit outside that protection completely.

Bitcoin and Other Crypto

Bitcoin and other crypto assets bought through Cash App are not FDIC insured. The FDIC has stated directly that deposit insurance does not apply to crypto assets, that these products are not deposits, and that they may lose value.5Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. Advisory to FDIC-Insured Institutions Regarding FDIC Deposit Insurance and Dealings with Crypto Companies Market losses and platform problems on the crypto side fall on you.

Stocks Bought Through Cash App Investing

Stocks purchased through Cash App Investing are not FDIC insured either. Cash App Investing LLC is a registered broker-dealer and a member of SIPC, not the FDIC system.6FINRA. Cash App Investing Customer Relationship Summary SIPC covers customers up to $500,000, including a $250,000 limit for cash held in the brokerage account, if the brokerage firm itself fails and customer assets go missing. SIPC does not protect against a decline in the value of investments.7Securities Investor Protection Corporation. What SIPC Protects If a stock loses value, that is a market loss, not a covered event.

The Savings Balance

Cash App offers a separate savings balance that earns interest.8Cash App. No-Fee Savings with High Interest Because the savings balance is held at the same FDIC-insured partner banks as your regular Cash App balance, it falls under the same pass-through insurance rules. It also counts toward the same $250,000 aggregate cap at that bank. Regular balance plus savings balance plus any direct account at the partner bank all get added together.

What FDIC Insurance Does Not Protect Against

FDIC insurance protects you when the partner bank collapses. It does not necessarily protect you when the fintech company sitting between you and the bank runs into trouble.

When the financial technology middleman Synapse filed for bankruptcy, tens of thousands of customers had funds frozen for months because the company failed to properly track customer account balances. The partner banks could not reconcile all the records necessary to return funds to individual users, even though the banks themselves were still operating. In a worst case, where a non-bank company offers deposit-like products without a proper bank partner, customers could become unsecured creditors of the bankruptcy estate and potentially lose their funds altogether.9Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Statement of CFPB Director Rohit Chopra on Stopping Fintech Deposit Meltdowns

If you keep meaningful amounts of money on Cash App, consider moving funds periodically to a bank where you hold a direct account relationship.

How to Check Your Own Coverage

You can find your partner bank information inside Cash App. On the mobile app, tap the Money tab, scroll to Direct Deposit, and view account details. On a computer, log in at cash.app/account, click Money, and view account details using your PIN. The banking information will show the partner bank holding your funds.3Cash App. Direct Deposit Account Details

Once you know the partner bank’s name, check whether you hold any other accounts at that same bank. The $250,000 limit covers your total deposits at that bank across all accounts in the same ownership category, not $250,000 per account.4Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 12 USC 1821 Insurance Funds The FDIC’s Electronic Deposit Insurance Estimator (EDIE) at fdic.gov can calculate exact coverage across accounts at the same institution.

Finally, confirm that you have an active Cash Card or a qualifying Sponsored Account. Without one, the pass-through mechanism does not apply, and your balance may sit outside the FDIC safety net entirely.1Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.
