Every transcript type is free.1Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 156, How to Get a Transcript or Copy of Your Tax Return Before you request one, decide which of the five types you actually need, because ordering the wrong one is the most common reason people end up doing this twice.

Which Transcript You Need

Five transcript types exist for individuals, and each pulls a different slice of your IRS records.2Internal Revenue Service. Transcript Types for Individuals and Ways to Order Them

  • A tax return transcript shows most line items from your original Form 1040 as filed, plus attached forms and schedules. It does not reflect amendments or IRS adjustments made afterward. Available for the current year and three prior tax years. Most mortgage lenders accept this version for income verification.
  • A tax account transcript shows basic account data such as filing status, taxable income, and payment types, and it does reflect changes made after your original filing. Available for the current year and nine prior years through the online account, but only the current year and three prior years by mail or phone.
  • A record of account transcript combines the return transcript and the account transcript into a single document. Available for the current year and three prior years.
  • A wage and income transcript lists data from information returns filed on your behalf, including W-2s, 1099s, 1098s, and 5498s. Available for the current year and nine prior years, with the current processing year generally appearing in early February. If you have more than roughly 85 income documents, the online request won’t generate and you’ll need to submit Form 4506-T.
  • A verification of non-filing letter confirms the IRS has no record of a processed return for a given year. It doesn’t mean you weren’t required to file, only that the IRS hasn’t received one. Available after June 15 for the current tax year and anytime for the three prior years. Students applying for federal financial aid use this most often.

The IRS masks your Social Security number on every transcript, showing only the last four digits. If a lender needs a way to match the transcript to a loan file, Form 4506-T has an optional Customer File Number field that prints on the transcript in place of your full SSN.3Internal Revenue Service. Get It Online: Individual Online Account

The fastest route is the IRS Individual Online Account at IRS.gov. Once you’ve verified your identity, you can view, print, or download any of the five transcript types as a PDF right away.2Internal Revenue Service. Transcript Types for Individuals and Ways to Order Them

First-time users go through ID.me verification, which requires uploading a government-issued photo ID and taking a video selfie. You must be at least 18 to create an account this way.

The online account is also the only channel that reaches back further than three prior years. Tax account transcripts and wage and income transcripts are available for nine prior years through the online account; return transcripts and record of account transcripts still cap at three prior years.4Internal Revenue Service. Get It by Mail or Phone

If you can’t or don’t want to set up an online account, use the Get Transcript by Mail tool on IRS.gov or call the automated line at 800-908-9946. Either way, the transcript ships to the mailing address the IRS has on file for you. Delivery typically runs 5 to 10 calendar days.2Internal Revenue Service. Transcript Types for Individuals and Ways to Order Them

Only two transcript types come through these channels: the tax return transcript and the tax account transcript. Both are limited to the current year and three prior years.

Get It by Form 4506-T

Form 4506-T covers the situations the online and phone options don’t: transcripts older than three years by mail, wage and income transcripts, and delivery to a third party. Download the form from IRS.gov, complete it, and mail or fax it to the IRS office listed in the instructions for your region. Most requests submitted this way are processed within 10 business days.5Internal Revenue Service. Form 4506-T, Request for Transcript of Tax Return

If you only need an individual tax return transcript, the shorter Form 4506-T-EZ works.6Internal Revenue Service. About Form 4506-T-EZ, Short Form Request for Individual Tax Return Transcript For any other transcript type, use the full Form 4506-T.

On the form, check the box for the transcript type you want and enter the tax year’s ending date (December 31 for most individual filers). If you need transcripts for multiple years and your address on file changed between them, you may need to submit a separate form for each address.

What to Have Ready

Whichever method you use, have these three things in hand: your Social Security number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number, your date of birth, and the mailing address that appears on your most recently filed return.

The address is where most people trip up. The IRS matches your request against the address on file, and small differences — an abbreviated street name, a missing apartment number — can cause a rejection. If you’ve moved since filing, the address you need is the one from your last return, not your current one.

Why Requests Get Rejected

The IRS enforces Form 4506-T requirements strictly, and rejections cluster around a handful of errors.

Address mismatches cause the most rejections. The address on the form must match what the IRS has on file for the specific tax year you’re requesting, not necessarily your current address. Filing from one address in 2022 and a different one in 2024 and putting both years on a single form can force separate submissions.

Name and SSN mismatches come next. The name and taxpayer identification number on the form must exactly match the IRS master file. Maiden names, legal name changes, or transposed digits will trigger a rejection.

Alterations disqualify the form automatically. White-out, crossed-out entries, or a mix of typed and handwritten fields will get it thrown out. Start over on a clean form instead of correcting.

The signature must match the taxpayer name on the form, and the IRS must receive the form within 120 days of the signature date. Electronically signed forms need accompanying audit trail documentation. If you’re faxing, don’t sign in blue ink; it can become illegible in transmission.

If your request triggers an identity theft flag (a “Code 10 rejection”), the alert stays on your account indefinitely. Call the IRS Identity Protection Specialized Unit at 800-908-4490 to clear it before any future transcript request will go through.

When Someone Else Requests Your Transcript

Lenders, tax professionals, and other third parties can pull your transcripts directly with your authorization. The right form depends on why they need it.

Form 8821 for Information Access

Form 8821 authorizes a specific person or organization to inspect or receive your tax information for the tax types and years you list. The designee can access records verbally, in writing, or through the IRS online portal, but cannot represent you before the IRS or sign anything on your behalf.7Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 8821

If you’re using Form 8821 for income verification rather than to resolve a tax matter, the IRS must receive it within 120 days of your signature date. You can submit it online at IRS.gov, by fax, or by mail.

Form 4506-C for Mortgage Lenders

Mortgage lenders and other financial institutions typically use the Income Verification Express Service (IVES). You sign Form 4506-C authorizing the IRS to release your transcript to a designated IVES participant, the lender submits it, and the IRS delivers the transcript electronically.8Internal Revenue Service. Income Verification Express Service The 120-day window applies here too.9Internal Revenue Service. Form 4506-C, IVES Request for Transcript of Tax Return If a lender hands you this form during a loan application, that’s what’s happening in the background.

Form 2848 for Representation

Form 2848 goes further. It authorizes an enrolled agent, CPA, or attorney to represent you before the IRS, sign agreements, and perform essentially any act you could yourself on the tax matters listed. It’s built for active disputes or professional representation, not routine income verification.

Requesting a Transcript for a Deceased Taxpayer

If you’re managing an estate, submit Form 4506-T along with proof of your authority: a copy of the death certificate and either court-approved Letters Testamentary or a completed Form 56 (Notice Concerning Fiduciary Relationship). You’ll also need the deceased person’s full name, last known address, and Social Security number.10Internal Revenue Service. Request Deceased Person’s Information

Online requests for a deceased taxpayer’s transcript are mailed to the deceased person’s address of record, not yours. To have it sent to you as executor, submit Form 4506-T by mail or fax.

Disaster Area Expedite

If your home, business, or tax records are in a federally declared disaster area, the IRS will expedite transcript requests at no additional charge, and it waives the $30 fee for a full copy of a return under Form 4506. Write the disaster name across the top of the form when you submit.11Internal Revenue Service. FAQs for Disaster Victims

To request expedited transcripts, call the IRS Disaster Hotline at 866-562-5227, or fax Form 4506-T to your assigned IRS campus with the disaster designation written at the top. Tax professionals registered for IRS e-Services can also pull transcripts electronically for affected clients.

When a Transcript Isn’t Enough

A transcript is not a photocopy of your return. It’s a reformatted summary the IRS generates from its records. For most purposes, including mortgage applications, student aid, and resolving a balance, a transcript is what’s expected. If you actually need the return as filed, with all attachments and schedules in their original format, request a copy using Form 4506.2Internal Revenue Service. Transcript Types for Individuals and Ways to Order Them

Full copies cost $30 per return, payable by check or money order with the request or the IRS will reject it.12Internal Revenue Service. Form 4506, Request for Copy of Tax Return If the IRS can’t locate the return, the fee is refunded. Legal proceedings and situations where a specific attachment matters (an auditor reviewing a complex Schedule C, rather than just confirming adjusted gross income) are the usual reasons to pay for the full copy.
