IRS Tax Return Transcript: Contents, Access, and Timing

An IRS tax return transcript is a free summary of most line items from your original Form 1040 for a given tax year, including your adjusted gross income, filing status, taxable income, deductions, and credits. Mortgage lenders, financial aid offices, and courts handling support cases routinely ask for it as proof of income. The fastest way to get one is through your IRS Individual Online Account, where you can view and download it immediately after verifying your identity. If you can’t verify online, you can request it by phone or mail and have it delivered in about five to ten days.

What a Tax Return Transcript Shows

The transcript mirrors most line items from your Form 1040 or Form 1040-SR as filed: total income, adjusted gross income, taxable income, tax liability, payments, refund amount, and the deductions and credits you claimed. It also captures data from attached schedules such as Schedule A for itemized deductions and Schedule C for business income. For a lender running debt-to-income calculations, the AGI line is usually the figure that matters most.1Internal Revenue Service. Transcript Types for Individuals and Ways to Order Them

What it does not show: attachments you sent with the return, such as receipts or explanatory letters, and any changes made after you filed. If you later amended the return on Form 1040-X, those revised figures will not appear on this transcript.1Internal Revenue Service. Transcript Types for Individuals and Ways to Order Them

How to Request a Tax Return Transcript

Online for Immediate Access

The IRS online transcript tool lets you view, download, and print your transcript on the spot. You’ll need an IRS Individual Online Account, which requires identity verification through ID.me. ID.me offers a self-service option that takes about five to ten minutes and a video call option with an agent; both require a government-issued photo ID. Once your account is set up, you can pull transcripts for any available year without waiting.2Internal Revenue Service. Get Your Tax Record

By Phone or Mail

If you’d rather skip online verification, request a transcript by mail through the IRS website or by calling the automated line at 800-908-9946. Both options send the transcript to the address the IRS has on file for you, so it won’t help if you’ve moved and haven’t updated your address. Delivery takes five to ten calendar days.1Internal Revenue Service. Transcript Types for Individuals and Ways to Order Them

Paper Request Using Form 4506-T

When the online and phone routes don’t work, submit Form 4506-T by mail or fax. You’ll need your Social Security Number or ITIN, filing status, and the mailing address from your most recent return. On line 6, enter “1040” and check box 6a to specify a return transcript. A single form can cover the current year plus up to three prior processing years. Mail it to the IRS office listed for your region in the form instructions; most requests are processed within about ten business days after the IRS receives them.3Internal Revenue Service. When Your Transcript Becomes Available After Filing

A freshly filed return does not produce a transcript right away. The wait depends on how you filed and whether you owed a balance:

  • E-filed with no balance due or paid in full at filing: two to three weeks.
  • Paper-filed with no balance due: six to eight weeks.
  • Balance due, paid after filing: three to four weeks after the IRS receives full payment.
  • Balance due not paid in full: the return is generally processed by mid-May, with transcripts available by late May.

If a lender or aid office needs your transcript by a specific date, filing electronically and paying any balance with the return is the shortest path.4Internal Revenue Service. Current Year Transcript Availability

When You Need a Different Transcript Instead

The tax return transcript is the right choice for most income-verification requests, but it isn’t the only transcript the IRS offers, and picking the wrong one is a common reason people have to request again. Four other free transcripts cover different situations:

  • A tax account transcript shows filing status, taxable income, and payment types, and it reflects changes made after you filed. Available for the current year and nine prior years through your online account, or three prior years by mail or phone.
  • A record of account transcript combines the return transcript and the account transcript into one document, so it shows both the original figures and any later adjustments. Available for the current year and three prior years.
  • A wage and income transcript shows data from information returns the IRS received about you, including W-2s, 1099s, 1098s, and 5498s. Limited to roughly 85 documents per year. Available for the current year and nine prior years.
  • A verification of non-filing letter confirms the IRS has no processed return on file for a specific year. Available after June 15 for the current year, or anytime for the prior three years.

If you filed an amended return and need the corrected figures to show, the tax account transcript or record of account is what you want, not the return transcript.1Internal Revenue Service. Transcript Types for Individuals and Ways to Order Them

Letting a Lender Pull Your Transcript Directly

Mortgage lenders often need to pull your transcript straight from the IRS rather than accept a printout you brought in. This runs through the Income Verification Express Service (IVES). The lender gives you Form 4506-C to sign and submits it to the IRS on your behalf.5Internal Revenue Service. Income Verification Express Service

Only IRS-approved IVES participants can submit Form 4506-C, and the form must name both the IVES participant and the client company that will receive the data. Your signature is valid for 120 days; if the lender doesn’t submit it within that window, the request is rejected and you’ll have to sign a new one.6Internal Revenue Service. You can also authorize a lender to request your transcript through your IRS online account, which skips the paper form.5Internal Revenue Service. Income Verification Express Service

Transcript vs. Full Copy of Your Return

All five transcript types are free. A transcript is not the same as a photocopy of your actual filed return. If you need a complete copy, including every attachment as filed, use Form 4506 and pay $30 per return. Payment goes by check or money order payable to the United States Treasury, and processing takes considerably longer than a transcript request.7Internal Revenue Service. For most purposes the free transcript is enough. Mortgage lenders, student aid offices, and most attorneys accept it. Full copies tend to come up only in audits, certain legal disputes, or when you’re reconstructing records after a disaster and need every page exactly as filed.
