IRS Reject Code IND-452: Causes, Fixes, and IP PIN Prevention

IRS reject code IND-452 means the IRS has already accepted a federal tax return filed under your Social Security number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number for the same tax year. It is not an adjusted gross income mismatch, and resubmitting the same return will not clear it. Someone — you, a family member, or an unauthorized filer — already filed under your number, and until you figure out who, you cannot e-file. In most cases the fix is to print your return and mail it.

What the Rejection Actually Says

When your software transmits a return, the IRS checks whether it already holds an accepted return for that SSN or ITIN and that tax year. If it does, the second submission comes back with IND-452. The IRS is not challenging your identity or your figures. It is telling you a return is already on file under your number. That distinction matters because no edit to your AGI, name, or data in the return will change the outcome. The duplicate on the IRS side has to be accounted for first.

Why It Happens

Innocent explanations are far more common than fraud, so start there.

  • A family member already filed using your information. A spouse may have submitted a joint return, or a parent may have claimed you as a dependent before you filed on your own.
  • You accidentally transmitted the same return twice, which is easy to do if you switched software partway through the season or clicked submit a second time.
  • A digit of the SSN was transposed on your return and happens to match another taxpayer’s number.
  • Someone used your SSN to file a fraudulent return and claim a refund.

How to Resolve IND-452

Rule Out the Simple Explanations First

Check the SSN on your return digit by digit against your Social Security card. Then ask anyone who might reasonably have filed using your information: a spouse, a parent who may have claimed you as a dependent, or a tax preparer who could have transmitted the return already. If you tried more than one software product this year, log into each account and look for a transmitted return.

If you find the duplicate — say your spouse already filed jointly — coordinate from there. Depending on the situation, the right move may be amending the existing return rather than filing a second one.

Print and Mail Your Return

If the SSN is correct and no one you know filed on your behalf, electronic filing is off the table for this tax year. The IRS system will keep rejecting your submissions because it already holds an accepted return under your number. Print the full return, sign and date it, and mail it to the IRS service center for your state. The IRS publishes mailing addresses organized by state and by whether you are enclosing a payment.1Internal Revenue Service. Where to File Addresses for Taxpayers and Tax Professionals Filing Form 1040 If you are sending a check with Form 1040-V, use regular mail; private delivery services can delay payment processing. A paper return does not require prior-year AGI verification because your handwritten signature authenticates it.

When to Treat It as Identity Theft

If you have ruled out every innocent explanation and no one you know filed under your SSN, someone else likely did. Act quickly.

File Form 14039, Identity Theft Affidavit. You can submit it online at irs.gov or complete the paper version and mail or fax it in.2Internal Revenue Service. When to File an Identity Theft Affidavit Also report the theft at IdentityTheft.gov, run by the Federal Trade Commission, which can transfer your Form 14039 to the IRS electronically on your behalf.

Paper-file your own legitimate return alongside the affidavit. The IRS will investigate the fraudulent filing, but expect the process to take several months. Monitor your IRS online account and your credit reports while it works through.

If the Rejection Hits Near April 15

Timing matters, because retransmitting won’t rescue you. The IRS generally allows a five-calendar-day grace period after the deadline to correct and retransmit a rejected e-filed return, but IND-452 is not a fixable data error. You need a paper return in the mail.

A paper return is treated as timely if it is postmarked by the due date. If you are already past it, mail the return as soon as you can to limit penalties. The failure-to-file penalty is 5% of unpaid tax per month, capped at 25%. The failure-to-pay penalty adds 0.5% per month on any unpaid balance, also capped at 25%. If the return is more than 60 days late, a minimum penalty applies: for returns due in 2026, the lesser of $525 or 100% of the tax owed.3Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 653, IRS Notices and Bills, Penalties and Interest Charges Interest accrues daily on unpaid balances from the original due date. If you are owed a refund, these penalties do not apply, but filing promptly is still how you start the clock on getting your money.

Stop It From Happening Again: Get an IP PIN

An Identity Protection PIN is a six-digit number the IRS assigns to you that blocks anyone else from e-filing a return under your SSN. When you have one, your tax software asks for the IP PIN in place of prior-year AGI verification.4Internal Revenue Service. Validating Your Electronically Filed Tax Return Any taxpayer can request one, through any of three routes.5Internal Revenue Service. Get an Identity Protection PIN

  • Online account. The fastest option. Create or log into your IRS online account and find the IP PIN on your profile page. You will need to verify your identity through ID.me if you do not already have an account.
  • Form 15227. If you cannot create an online account and your AGI on your last filed return was below $84,000 ($168,000 for married filing jointly), submit Form 15227 online. The IRS will call to verify your identity and then mail the PIN within four to six weeks.
  • In-person visit. Schedule an appointment at a local Taxpayer Assistance Center. Bring a government-issued photo ID and one additional form of identification. Your PIN arrives by mail within about three weeks.

Even if this year’s IND-452 turned out to be an ordinary duplicate, requesting an IP PIN takes a few minutes and is the most effective step you can take to keep anyone else from filing under your number next year.
