IRS Refund Processing Time: Timelines, Delays, and Reviews

Most federal tax refunds are issued within 21 days when you e-file and choose direct deposit. Paper returns take six weeks or more from the date the IRS receives them, and IRS refund processing time can stretch further when a return is flagged for identity verification, income mismatches, or certain credits that Congress has told the agency to hold.1Internal Revenue Service. Standard Refund Timelines

E-filed returns move through automated checks as soon as they hit IRS servers. If nothing is flagged, the refund is generally issued within 21 days of receipt.1Internal Revenue Service. Processing Status for Tax Forms Many arrive sooner.

Paper returns are slower by design. The IRS has to receive, sort, and key in every line before processing begins, which pushes the timeline to six weeks or more from the day the return is received.2Internal Revenue Service. Refunds Returns mailed near the April deadline tend to sit at the longer end of that range.

How you asked to be paid matters after processing finishes. Direct deposit is the fastest delivery method and the one the IRS encourages.3Internal Revenue Service. The Benefits of Having a Tax Refund Direct Deposited A paper check adds mail transit on top of whatever the processing took.

The EITC and ACTC Hold

If your return claims the Earned Income Tax Credit or the Additional Child Tax Credit, federal law prohibits the IRS from issuing your refund before mid-February, regardless of how early you filed. The hold applies to your entire refund, not just the portion tied to those credits.4Internal Revenue Service. When to Expect Your Refund if You Claimed the Earned Income Tax Credit or Additional Child Tax Credit Congress imposed the delay through the Protecting Americans from Tax Hikes Act to give the agency more time to verify these credits.

If you e-file early with direct deposit and your return has no other issues, the IRS estimates your EITC or ACTC refund should arrive by early March.4Internal Revenue Service. When to Expect Your Refund if You Claimed the Earned Income Tax Credit or Additional Child Tax Credit Filing in January puts you near the front of the line once the hold lifts, not ahead of it.

Why Refunds Get Delayed

Income Mismatches

The IRS cross-references your return against the W-2 and 1099 forms your employers and banks submit. When the numbers don’t line up, the return gets pulled for review. This can happen because an employer filed a corrected W-2 you never saw, or because you forgot a small 1099 from a side job. Sorting it out adds weeks.

Math Errors and Adjustments

If the IRS catches a calculation mistake or a credit claimed incorrectly, it corrects the return and mails you a notice. A correction that reduces your refund comes with a CP12; one that produces a balance due comes with a CP11. You have 60 days from the notice date to dispute the change. After that, the IRS treats it as accepted.

Identity Verification

Returns flagged for possible identity theft are frozen until the taxpayer proves who they are. The IRS sends a 5071C-series letter with instructions to verify online at irs.gov/verifyreturn or by calling the number on the notice.5Internal Revenue Service. Understanding Your CP5071 Series Notice You’ll need the notice, the return in question, and supporting documents like W-2s or 1099s. The refund doesn’t move until verification is complete.

Incomplete Paper Returns

Paper returns missing a signature, a schedule, or a Social Security number get pulled for manual handling. A tax examiner has to contact you, wait for your response, and re-enter the corrected return. That can add several weeks to an already long paper timeline.

CP05 Review Notices

If the IRS needs extra time to verify income, withholding, or credits, it may send a CP05 notice. The notice doesn’t ask you to send anything. It tells you a review is underway and asks you to wait up to 60 days from the notice date. Only call the IRS if you still haven’t heard back after that window closes.6Internal Revenue Service. When the Refund Is Smaller, Not Late

A refund that comes in short isn’t necessarily delayed. Through the Treasury Offset Program, the Bureau of the Fiscal Service can reduce your refund to pay past-due child support, federal agency debts, state income tax, and certain state unemployment compensation debts.7Internal Revenue Service. Reduced Refund Congress authorized these offsets under 26 U.S.C. ยง 6402.8Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 6402 – Authority to Make Credits or Refunds

If your refund was offset, the Bureau of the Fiscal Service sends a notice identifying the amount taken and the agency that received it. You can also call the automated Treasury Offset Program line at 800-304-3107 for offset details.9Bureau of the Fiscal Service. Contact Us The IRS can’t reverse an offset; you deal directly with the agency that holds the debt. If you filed jointly and the debt belongs to your spouse, Form 8379 (Injured Spouse Allocation) lets you reclaim your share, and it takes up to eight weeks to process on its own.10Internal Revenue Service. Checking Your Status

The IRS runs a “Where’s My Refund?” tool on irs.gov and inside the IRS2Go mobile app. You’ll need three pieces of information from your return: your Social Security number or ITIN, your filing status, and the exact whole-dollar refund amount.2Internal Revenue Service. Refunds Any mismatch will lock you out, so check against the filed return.

Status becomes available 24 hours after you e-file or four weeks after you mail a paper return.11Internal Revenue Service. Check the Status of a Refund in Just a Few Clicks Using the Where’s My Refund Tool Before those windows the system simply won’t find the return.

The tracker shows three phases:

  • Return Received: the IRS has it and is reviewing.
  • Refund Approved: the review is finished and payment is being prepared.
  • Refund Sent: the Treasury has released the money to your bank or mailed a check.

The system updates once a day and goes offline for maintenance every Monday between midnight and 3 a.m. Eastern Time.12Internal Revenue Service. When Is Where’s My Refund Available Checking multiple times a day won’t show anything new.

What to Do When Yours Is Overdue

Wait out the standard window before calling. The IRS asks you not to call before 21 days after e-filing or six weeks after mailing a paper return.13Internal Revenue Service. Let Us Help You Earlier calls put you in a long queue for information a representative can’t give you yet.

If the tracker shows “Refund Sent” but a paper check never arrived, request a refund trace by submitting Form 3911 to the IRS Refund Inquiry Unit for your state, by mail or fax.14Internal Revenue Service. About Form 3911, Taxpayer Statement Regarding Refund Before that, use Where’s My Refund or IRS2Go to confirm the check was actually mailed and that the IRS has the right address.

If the delay is causing serious financial harm, such as being unable to pay rent, keep utilities on, or buy food, the Taxpayer Advocate Service may be able to step in. TAS considers cases involving financial hardship, an immediate threat of adverse action, or irreparable damage like harm to your credit report.15Taxpayer Advocate Service. Can TAS Help Me With My Tax Issue You can request assistance through the TAS website or your local TAS office, and you may need documentation of the hardship.

Interest on Late Refunds

When the IRS takes too long, it owes you interest. If your refund isn’t issued within 45 days of the filing deadline (or 45 days after you filed, if you filed late), interest accrues from the original due date of the return.16Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 6611 – Interest on Overpayments You don’t have to ask; the IRS adds it automatically to the payment.

The rate changes quarterly. For the first quarter of 2026, the rate on individual overpayments is 7% per year, compounded daily.17Internal Revenue Service. Interest Rates Remain the Same for the First Quarter of 2026 For April through June 2026, the rate drops to 6%.18Internal Revenue Service. Internal Revenue Bulletin 2026-8 The interest is taxable income and must be reported on next year’s return.

Amended Returns Run on a Different Clock

If you filed Form 1040-X to correct a previously filed return, processing takes 8 to 12 weeks, and some cases run to 16 weeks.19Internal Revenue Service. Where’s My Amended Return Status becomes visible about three weeks after submission, but only through the separate “Where’s My Amended Return?” tool. The regular refund tracker doesn’t carry amended-return information.

Deadline to Claim a Refund

Refunds have a hard expiration date. You generally have three years from the date you filed, or two years from the date you paid the tax, whichever is later. Miss it and the money becomes permanent property of the U.S. Treasury.20Internal Revenue Service. Time You Can Claim a Credit or Refund Returns filed before the due date are treated as filed on the due date for this calculation.

Limited exceptions apply to taxpayers affected by a presidentially declared disaster, those who served in a combat zone, and claims involving a bad debt or worthless security, which get a seven-year window.20Internal Revenue Service. Time You Can Claim a Credit or Refund If you have unfiled prior-year returns and think a refund is waiting, file them soon. The clock runs whether you file or not.
