For most people, an IRS refund arrives by direct deposit within 21 calendar days of the date the IRS accepts an electronically filed return. Paper filers wait six weeks or longer. Those windows assume no math errors, no identity verification holds, and no debts that trigger an offset. When something does go wrong, the delay is usually measured in weeks, not days.
The 21-Day Benchmark
The 21-day window is the IRS’s own benchmark for e-filed returns that clear automated processing without issues.1Internal Revenue Service. Processing Status for Tax Forms The clock starts when the IRS accepts the return, not when you submit it. Acceptance typically comes 24 to 48 hours after submission, and your tax software will confirm it.
Paper returns are slower by design. Staff have to open mail, sort documents, and key the data in before any automated processing begins. The IRS asks paper filers to wait at least six weeks before checking on a return, and peak-season backlogs can stretch that further.2Internal Revenue Service. Let Us Help You
The February 15 Hold for EITC and ACTC
If your return claims the Earned Income Tax Credit or the Additional Child Tax Credit, a separate rule overrides the 21-day timeline no matter how early you file. Under 26 U.S.C. ยง 6402(m), the IRS cannot issue any refund on these returns before February 15, and the hold applies to the entire refund, not just the credit portion.3Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 6402 – Authority to Make Credits or Refunds4Internal Revenue Service. When to Expect Your Refund if You Claimed the Earned Income Tax Credit or Additional Child Tax Credit
The delay exists so the IRS can cross-check reported income against employer W-2 filings. In practice, most early EITC and ACTC filers who use direct deposit see their money in early March. For tax year 2025 returns, the IRS estimates most of these refunds will arrive by March 2 if nothing else flags the return.4Internal Revenue Service. When to Expect Your Refund if You Claimed the Earned Income Tax Credit or Additional Child Tax Credit The Where’s My Refund tool usually updates the status of these returns by February 21.
What Pushes a Refund Past 21 Days
The most common triggers are simple: math errors and mismatched Social Security numbers. When the automated system catches a discrepancy, the return is pulled out for a human reviewer, and you’ll typically get a notice explaining any changes.
Returns flagged for possible identity theft take longer. The IRS may require you to verify your identity online or by phone before any money moves. If a return is pulled for a more thorough review, resolution can take anywhere from 45 to 180 days depending on how many issues need examining.5Taxpayer Advocate Service. Held or Stopped Refunds Repeated calls do not speed the review.
When the Deposit Is Smaller Than Expected
A refund can arrive on schedule but come in short. The most common cause is the Treasury Offset Program, which lets the federal government intercept refunds to cover past-due debts such as unpaid child support, defaulted federal student loans, and overdue state or federal obligations.6Bureau of the Fiscal Service. Treasury Offset Program You’ll receive a notice showing how much was taken and which agency received it.
The IRS itself can also adjust a refund. A CP12 notice means the agency corrected an error and recalculated the amount; the notice explains exactly what changed.7Internal Revenue Service. Understanding Your CP12 Notice
Injured Spouse Claims
If you file jointly and your spouse’s debt triggers an offset, Form 8379 (Injured Spouse Allocation) asks the IRS to split the refund and protect your share. Processing is slow: about 11 weeks if attached to an e-filed return, 14 weeks with a paper return, and roughly 8 weeks if filed separately after the return has already been processed.8Internal Revenue Service. When the Direct Deposit Fails
Entering the wrong routing or account number on a return is largely unrecoverable once the IRS accepts it. If the numbers point to an account that doesn’t match your name, or to no account at all, the bank rejects the deposit. The IRS then mails a paper check to the address on the return and sends a CP53C notice explaining what happened; the agency asks you to allow up to 10 weeks for the situation to be resolved.9Internal Revenue Service. Understanding Your CP53C Notice
Verify your routing and account numbers against a voided check or your bank’s online portal before filing. It’s the single easiest way to avoid weeks of delay.
Tracking the Deposit
The IRS offers two tools for checking status: the Where’s My Refund page on irs.gov and the IRS2Go mobile app. Both require your Social Security number, filing status, and the exact whole-dollar refund amount from the return.10Internal Revenue Service. Refunds The tracker updates once per day, usually overnight, so checking repeatedly during the day shows nothing new.11Internal Revenue Service. Check the Status of a Refund in Just a Few Clicks Using the Where’s My Refund Tool
The tool moves through three stages:
- Return Received, meaning the IRS has the return and is processing it.
- Refund Approved, which often includes a projected deposit date.
- Refund Sent, meaning Treasury has initiated the transfer to your bank.
Direct deposits typically post within a few business days of the “sent” status, depending on your bank.
The Refund Says Sent but Nothing Arrived
The IRS asks you to wait at least 21 days after e-filing, or six weeks after mailing a paper return, before contacting them.12Taxpayer Advocate Service. I Don’t Have My Refund Calling earlier generally gets you a request to keep waiting.
If Where’s My Refund shows the refund was sent but nothing has hit your account after five business days, you can request a refund trace by filing Form 3911 (Taxpayer Statement Regarding Refund). Both spouses must sign the form on a joint return.13Internal Revenue Service. About Form 3911, Taxpayer Statement Regarding Refund The trace involves coordination between the IRS and your bank and can take several weeks to resolve.
Interest if the IRS Runs Late
The IRS has 45 days from the later of the filing deadline or the actual filing date to issue a refund without owing you interest.14Internal Revenue Service. Interest After that, interest accrues on the unpaid amount, compounded daily. For 2026, the individual overpayment interest rate is 7% for the first quarter and 6% for the second.15Internal Revenue Service. Quarterly Interest Rates
Refund interest is taxable. The IRS will issue a 1099-INT if the interest paid exceeds $10, and it has to be reported on the following year’s return.
