An IRS paper check refund usually arrives about three weeks after you e-file, or six or more weeks after the IRS receives a mailed paper return. You can watch its progress in the “Where’s My Refund?” tool, and if the check never shows up, gets stolen, or expires, the IRS has a defined process to void the original and send a replacement.
How Long a Paper Check Takes to Arrive
The timeline turns almost entirely on how you filed:
- E-filed return: about three weeks from the date you e-filed.
- Paper return mailed in: six or more weeks from the date the IRS received it.
Those windows cover the whole path from receipt through printing and mailing. The IRS does not publish a separate “mailing window” after approval; the weeks above include everything.1Internal Revenue Service. Refunds
Amended Returns
If your check comes from a Form 1040-X, plan for a much longer wait. The IRS generally needs 8 to 12 weeks to process an amended return, and some cases stretch to 16 weeks. Status shows up about three weeks after you submit the amendment in the separate “Where’s My Amended Return?” tool.2Internal Revenue Service. Where’s My Amended Return?
Injured Spouse Claims
Filing Form 8379 adds time. Filed electronically with a joint return, expect about 11 weeks. Filed on paper with a joint return, roughly 14 weeks. Filing Form 8379 by itself after a joint return has already been processed is the fastest at about 8 weeks, though processing errors can push any of those further out.3Internal Revenue Service. How to Track Your Paper Check
The primary tracker is “Where’s My Refund?” on IRS.gov. You’ll need three pieces of information: your Social Security number or ITIN, your filing status, and the exact whole-dollar refund amount from your return.4Internal Revenue Service. About Where’s My Refund?
The tool moves through three stages: Return Received, Refund Approved, and Refund Sent. Once it hits Refund Sent, the display shows the date the check was mailed. The IRS2Go mobile app gives you the same information.5Internal Revenue Service. Check the Status of a Refund in Just a Few Clicks Using the Where’s My Refund? Tool
When to start checking depends on how you filed. If you e-filed, the system updates within 24 hours of the IRS acknowledging your return. If you mailed a paper return, wait four weeks before checking, because the system won’t have your information before then.4Internal Revenue Service. About Where’s My Refund?
For a little extra visibility, USPS Informed Delivery can show you a preview image of incoming mail, including government checks, before they reach your box. It’s free.
If You Moved After Filing
A paper check sent to an old address will not always be forwarded. If you move after filing, tell the IRS as soon as possible by submitting Form 8822 (Change of Address). Address changes can take four to six weeks to fully process, so file it the moment you know your new address rather than after the check fails to arrive.6Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 157, Change Your Address – How to Notify the IRS
If USPS can’t deliver the check, it goes back to the Bureau of the Fiscal Service, which cancels the check and freezes your account until the address is fixed. Once you update your address through Form 8822, by calling the IRS, or when you file your next return, the IRS can reissue the check. A reissued check typically arrives about four weeks after the address is corrected.7Internal Revenue Service. Returned Refunds/Releases
If Your Check Is Lost or Stolen
If the check hasn’t arrived within a reasonable window after the “Refund Sent” date, generally five weeks or more for a paper check, you can start a refund trace. The simplest route is inside “Where’s My Refund?”, which offers a trace option once enough time has passed. You can also call the IRS or mail Form 3911 (Taxpayer Statement Regarding Refund).8Internal Revenue Service. About Form 3911, Taxpayer Statement Regarding Refund
What happens next depends on whether the original check was cashed:
- Not cashed: the Bureau of the Fiscal Service voids the original and the IRS issues a replacement. The review can take up to six weeks.9Internal Revenue Service. Refund Inquiries
- Cashed by someone else: within about six weeks you’ll get a claim package that includes a copy of the cashed check. You complete the paperwork so the Bureau can compare signatures and investigate. If the Bureau finds the check was forged, it issues a replacement refund.
One important limit is spelled out on Form 3911 itself: the IRS cannot issue a replacement if you endorsed the check and someone else then cashed it. In that situation there was no forgery, and the law treats your endorsement as authorization.10Internal Revenue Service. Form 3911 – Taxpayer Statement Regarding Refund
If the Check Has Expired
Treasury checks expire one year after the date printed on the check. If you find one in a drawer past that mark, don’t try to deposit it. Banks and the Treasury Check Verification System won’t process checks older than 13 months.11U.S. Department of the Treasury. Treasury Check Verification System (TCVS)
To get a replacement, call the IRS at 800-829-0115. If you still have the expired check, write “VOID” on the back and destroy it. The IRS sends replacement checks only to your address of record, so confirm your address is current before calling. A replacement should arrive within 30 days.12Internal Revenue Service. Verifying a Check Is Real
If a Treasury check arrives and something looks off, the Treasury Check Verification System at tcvs.fiscal.treasury.gov can help, though it’s designed mainly for financial institutions. A bank can enter the routing transit number, check number, and amount to verify the check was actually issued by the Treasury. The system is available daily from 6:00 a.m. to midnight Eastern time. A check that doesn’t appear in the system isn’t automatically fake, and not every legitimate Treasury check carries the newer secure seal.11U.S. Department of the Treasury.
