IRS Paper Check: Delivery Times, Tracking, and Cashing Deadlines

An IRS paper check is a U.S. Treasury refund check printed and mailed by the Bureau of the Fiscal Service after the IRS approves your refund. It stays valid for exactly one year from the issue date, and once the IRS marks your refund “sent,” you should generally allow about four weeks for it to reach your mailbox.1Internal Revenue Service. Why You Got a Paper Check

Most people who receive a paper check didn’t ask for one. The IRS defaults to mailing a check whenever direct deposit fails or isn’t available. Common triggers:

  • A mistyped routing or account number caused the bank to reject the deposit. You’ll also get a CP53E notice explaining what happened.2Internal Revenue Service. Understanding Your CP53E Notice
  • Your account has already received three IRS direct deposits this year. The fourth refund and any after it automatically convert to a paper check. The limit is a fraud-prevention rule and can catch families who share one account.1Internal Revenue Service. Direct Deposit Limits
  • You filed a paper return without any bank information.
  • You requested a deposit to an account not in your own name and the IRS routed the refund to a check instead. If a bank accepts a deposit to the wrong account, recovering the money is between you and the bank; the IRS won’t intervene.3Internal Revenue Service. Refund Inquiries 18

If you’ve moved since filing, the check will go to the address on your last return. File Form 8822 to update it, and expect four to six weeks of processing.4Internal Revenue Service. Change of Address – Form 8822

How Long Delivery Takes

Paper checks are slower than direct deposit at every step. Total time depends on how you filed:

  • E-filed return: about three weeks. The IRS won’t research a missing refund until 21 days have passed.5Bureau of the Fiscal Service. Tax Refund Frequently Asked Questions
  • Paper return: allow six weeks or more from the date the IRS receives it.6Internal Revenue Service. Refunds

Once the status shows “Refund Sent,” add roughly four more weeks for postal delivery.1Internal Revenue Service. Direct Deposit Limits Calling the IRS earlier won’t help; phone representatives can’t do anything until the waiting period ends.

Tracking Your Check

Use the “Where’s My Refund?” tool at irs.gov or the IRS2Go app. You’ll need your Social Security number or ITIN, your filing status, and the exact whole-dollar refund amount from your return.6Internal Revenue Service. Refunds The tool moves through three stages: Return Received, Refund Approved, and Refund Sent.7Internal Revenue Service. How Taxpayers Can Check the Status of Their Federal Tax Refund “Refund Sent” for a paper check means Treasury has handed it to the postal service, not that it’s on your porch.

If the Check Never Arrives

Once the waiting period has passed, the IRS can trace the check. Two ways to start:

Form 3911 asks for your name, Social Security number, address, filing status, tax year, and whether the check was lost, stolen, destroyed, or never received. If you filed jointly, both spouses must sign. Mail or fax the completed form to the IRS service center for your state; the addresses are listed on the form’s page.9Internal Revenue Service. Form 3911 – Taxpayer Statement Regarding Refund

The IRS then coordinates with the Bureau of the Fiscal Service to see whether the original check was cashed. If it wasn’t, expect a replacement in about six weeks. If it was cashed, the Bureau will send you a claim package with a copy of the cashed check so you can review the endorsement. If the signature isn’t yours, the package walks you through filing a forgery claim. Return it within the timeframe specified; missing that deadline can void your claim. If the Bureau confirms forgery, it issues a replacement.10Taxpayer Advocate Service. Lost or Stolen Refund

If the Check Is Smaller Than You Expected

The most likely explanation is a refund offset. The Bureau of the Fiscal Service can reduce your refund before the check is printed to cover past-due federal taxes, unpaid child support, defaulted federal loans (including FHA mortgages), state income tax debts, and unemployment overpayments owed to a state.11Taxpayer Advocate Service. How to Prevent a Refund Offset

You should receive a notice explaining the reduction. For past-due federal tax, it comes from the IRS. For any other debt, it comes from the Bureau of the Fiscal Service.12Taxpayer Advocate Service. Notice CP49 Overpayment Adjustment No notice but a shortfall anyway? Call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040 for tax debts, or the Bureau of the Fiscal Service at 1-800-304-3107 to find out which agency received the money.13Bureau of the Fiscal Service. Tax Refund Offset

If you filed jointly and the offset was for your spouse’s debt and not yours, file Form 8379, Injured Spouse Allocation, to reclaim your share. A separate form is required for each affected tax year, and you have three years from the date the return was filed or two years from the date the tax was paid, whichever is later.14Internal Revenue Service. How Long You Have to Cash It

Every Treasury refund check is printed with “VOID AFTER ONE YEAR” above the signature line. Federal law says a Treasury check must be cashed within 12 months of the issue date, after which banks are not supposed to accept it.15Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 31 USC 3328 – Paying Checks and Drafts Uncashed funds go back to the agency that authorized the payment.16Treasury Financial Experience. Chapter 7000 Cancellations, Deposits, Reclamations, and Claims for Checks Drawn on the US Treasury

The debt to you doesn’t vanish with the check. If you find an expired refund check, destroy it and call 1-800-829-0115 to request a replacement. The IRS typically mails a new one within 30 days.17Internal Revenue Service. Understanding Your CP237A Notice Don’t wait indefinitely, though. The standard statute of limitations for claiming a refund is three years from the date you filed the return or two years from the date the tax was paid, whichever is later.

Interest the IRS May Owe You

Federal law gives the IRS 45 days from the filing deadline (April 15 for most people) or from the date you actually filed, whichever is later, to send your refund without owing interest. After that window, interest accrues from the original due date of the return until a date no more than 30 days before the check is issued.18Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 6611 – Interest on Overpayments

For 2026, the IRS overpayment rate for individuals is 7% for the first quarter and 6% for the second quarter.19Internal Revenue Service. Quarterly Interest Rates The rate is set quarterly and compounds daily. You don’t have to request it. If the IRS owes it, the amount is added to your refund automatically, and a notice explains the calculation.

Checks Made Out to a Deceased Taxpayer

A refund check in the name of someone who has died can’t just be endorsed and cashed. A surviving spouse who filed a joint return can generally claim the refund without extra paperwork. Everyone else — children, other relatives, estate representatives — needs to file Form 1310, Statement of Person Claiming Refund Due a Deceased Taxpayer, to show they’re legally entitled.20Internal Revenue Service. About Form 1310, Statement of Person Claiming Refund Due a Deceased Taxpayer A court-appointed executor or personal representative can claim the refund without Form 1310 by attaching a copy of the court appointment to the return.

Processing takes longer on these claims. The IRS reviews them more carefully, and delays of several weeks beyond normal timelines are common. Keep the death certificate and probate documents handy in case the IRS asks.

Switching to Direct Deposit

Direct deposit is faster and removes the risk of a lost or stolen check. Set it up on your tax return by entering your bank routing and account numbers through tax software, through your preparer, or in the designated section of a paper Form 1040. You can split a refund across up to three accounts.21Internal Revenue Service. Tell IRS to Direct Deposit Your Refund to One, Two, or Three Accounts

The IRS has signaled it will phase out paper refund checks for individuals in the near future, with alternatives like prepaid debit cards and digital wallets for taxpayers who can’t use direct deposit.22Internal Revenue Service. IRS to Phase Out Paper Tax Refund Checks Starting With Individual Taxpayers If you rely on cashing Treasury checks at retailers or check-cashing stores, opening a bank or credit union account before that transition takes hold will save the retail cashing fees that can run from a few dollars to a small percentage of the check.
