IRS Notice CP53C: Why Direct Deposit Failed and Next Steps

IRS Notice CP53C means your bank rejected the direct deposit of your tax refund, and the IRS is now holding the money for an 8-to-10-week review of your return before mailing a paper check or contacting you for more information.1Internal Revenue Service. Notice CP53C – Your Request for a Direct Deposit Refund It is not a simple “we’ll mail it instead” letter, and the wait is longer than most people expect.

What the Notice Actually Means

The IRS treats a rejected direct deposit as a potential fraud signal, not just a delivery failure. The notice explains that your return is being reviewed to confirm both its validity and your entitlement to the refund. Only after that review finishes will the IRS either send a paper check or write to you with follow-up questions.1Internal Revenue Service. Notice CP53C – Your Request for a Direct Deposit Refund

That distinction changes what you should expect. You are not simply waiting for a printer and an envelope. Your return is under active review, and the outcome could be a check, a letter, or a request for verification.

Why the Deposit Was Rejected

The most common cause is a wrong routing or account number on your Form 1040. A single transposed digit can send the deposit to an account that doesn’t exist or belongs to someone else. If the number fails the IRS’s own validation, you’ll hear back quickly. If it passes validation but the bank still can’t match it, the bank returns the funds to the IRS.2Internal Revenue Service. Banks also enforce name matching. If you filed a joint return and the account is in only one spouse’s name, or if the name on your return doesn’t line up with the name your bank has on file (maiden names, hyphenated names, recent changes), the bank can refuse the deposit.

Closed or dormant accounts are another common trigger. If you switched banks since your last filing and left an old account number on the return, the credit may not go through. Some banks also refuse government deposits into certain account types.

Finally, the IRS itself caps direct-deposited refunds at three per financial account per year. A fourth refund routed to the same account is automatically converted to a paper check.3Internal Revenue Service. Direct Deposit Limits The limit applies to prepaid debit cards too, and families who route several returns to a shared account hit it regularly.

The notice itself lists the routing and account numbers the IRS transmitted, along with the name on the return. Compare those against a voided check or your bank’s online portal. Whatever caused the rejection this time will cause it again next year unless you fix it before you file.

How Long the Wait Is

The CP53C review takes 8 to 10 weeks from the notice date. If you haven’t received your paper check or a follow-up letter within 10 weeks, call the phone number on your notice.4Internal Revenue Service. Understanding Your CP53C Notice Calling earlier won’t help. The IRS won’t have status information to share until the review period ends.1Internal Revenue Service. When the check is issued, it goes by U.S. Postal Service to the mailing address on your most recent return. You can watch the general status through the “Where’s My Refund?” tool at irs.gov, though updates during a CP53C review can be limited.5Internal Revenue Service. Also worth knowing: a federal Treasury check goes void one year after its issue date, and banks are not supposed to cash expired ones.7Treasury Check Verification System. Treasury Check Verification System – TCVS Don’t let a delayed check sit in a pile of mail for months.

Fix Your Address Now if It’s Wrong

Because the refund is coming as a paper check, an outdated address on file turns one problem into two. Update your address with the IRS as soon as you get the notice. You have three options:

  • File Form 8822 (Change of Address) and mail it to the address in the form’s instructions.
  • Call the IRS with your full name, Social Security number, and both old and new addresses. Expect identity verification questions.
  • Send a signed letter with the same information to the IRS service center where you filed. Joint filers need both signatures.

Address changes take four to six weeks to process, so acting quickly gives the update a chance to take effect before the check is mailed. File a forwarding request with your local post office as backup, but don’t rely on it alone. Not all post offices forward government checks.8Internal Revenue Service. If You Never Filed the Return

A CP53C for a return you didn’t submit is a serious identity theft signal. Someone likely filed a fraudulent return in your name and tried to collect the refund by direct deposit. The rejected deposit is actually the good news here, because the thief didn’t get paid. Now you need to move.

If the IRS also sent you a Taxpayer Protection Program letter (Letter 5071C, 4883C, or 5747C), follow those instructions to verify your identity and tell the IRS you didn’t file the return. Do not file Form 14039 (Identity Theft Affidavit) in that situation, because the Taxpayer Protection Program letter has already opened the case.9Internal Revenue Service. IRS Identity Theft Victim Assistance: How It Works

If no such letter arrived, file your legitimate return on paper and attach Form 14039 to the back. Once the IRS resolves the case, it places an identity theft indicator on your account and enrolls you in the Identity Protection PIN program, which issues a six-digit PIN required on all future filings.9Internal Revenue Service. IRS Identity Theft Victim Assistance: How It Works Also follow the Federal Trade Commission’s identity theft recovery steps and check with your state tax agency for a fraudulent state return.

If the Check Never Arrives

After the 10-week window, if there’s still no check and no letter, you can check “Where’s My Refund?” online, call the automated refund line at 800-829-1954, or reach an IRS representative at 800-829-1040.10Internal Revenue Service. Refund Inquiries

If the IRS confirms the check was mailed but you never received it, file Form 3911 (Taxpayer Statement Regarding Refund) to start a formal trace. Joint filers must both sign.11Internal Revenue Service. About Form 3911, Taxpayer Statement Regarding Refund If the check hasn’t been cashed, the IRS cancels it and issues a replacement. If someone cashed it, the Bureau of the Fiscal Service sends a claim package with a copy of the endorsed check, and the review adds about another six weeks.10Internal Revenue Service. Can You Give the IRS New Bank Details Instead?

No. Once your return has been posted and a CP53C has been issued, the IRS cannot re-attempt the direct deposit and you cannot update the bank information for that year’s refund. The paper check is the final resolution.

Starting in 2026, the IRS added a separate notice called the CP53E that gives some taxpayers a 30-day window to update bank details online through their IRS account. It applies in different circumstances and is a distinct notice from the CP53C.12Internal Revenue Service. Refund Inquiries 25 – Can I Change My Bank Account Information After I Filed My Tax Return? Your IRS online account will show whether a CP53E was issued to you. If only a CP53C is on file, you’re locked in for this year.

Getting It Right Next Year

Before you file next time, verify your routing and account numbers directly with your bank. A voided check works. Online portals sometimes list a different number for wire transfers than for ACH deposits, and you want the ACH routing number. Confirm the account name matches the name on your return. Joint filers depositing into a joint account should confirm the bank has both names on file. The same accuracy rules apply to prepaid debit cards.

Watch the three-deposit-per-account limit if you file for multiple family members. Spread refunds across different accounts once you hit three, or the fourth will be converted to a paper check and you’ll be back at the beginning of this article.3Internal Revenue Service. Direct Deposit Limits
