IRS In-Person Appointment: Scheduling, What to Bring, and Language Help

To book an IRS in-person appointment, call 844-545-5640. Every IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center (TAC) runs by appointment only, and that single scheduling line, open Monday through Friday, handles bookings for every office in the country.1Internal Revenue Service. Here’s What Taxpayers Should Know Before Visiting an IRS Office2Internal Revenue Service. Let Us Help You Before you call, it’s worth checking whether your issue even needs an office visit, because many of the reasons people assume they have to show up in person can be handled online in a few minutes.

Check Whether You Need to Come In at All

Your IRS online account covers more than most people realize. You can view your balance and up to five years of payment history, check refund status, pull transcripts and wage documents like W-2s and 1099s, set up or modify a payment plan, schedule bank payments up to 365 days out, and request an Identity Protection PIN.3Internal Revenue Service. Online Account for Individuals Digital copies of certain IRS notices and the status of a mail audit are available there too.

If any of that is your reason for considering a visit, skip the trip. A TAC appointment makes sense when you need a human being to look at original documents, or when your issue is tangled enough that phone reps keep sending you in circles.

One boundary worth knowing: TAC employees do not prepare or file tax returns. If that’s what you need, ask about the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) or Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) programs instead.4Internal Revenue Service. What Taxpayer Assistance Centers Handle

TACs focus on a specific set of services. The common ones:

  • ITIN applications and renewals, which require original identification documents (passport, national ID card) that the IRS authenticates on the spot.6Internal Revenue Service. Where to Submit an ITIN Application – IRS Courseware
  • Identity verification when a letter like 5071C or 6483C tells you to appear in person.
  • Account and notice issues that phone support couldn’t fix.
  • Tax account transcripts when online access isn’t working and you need a copy for a loan or other purpose.
  • Cash tax payments, which require 30 to 60 days of lead time because not every office accepts cash.7Internal Revenue Service. Pay Your Taxes With Cash

How to Schedule

Start on the IRS “Contact Your Local Office” page to find the nearest TAC, confirm which services that location offers, and get the address.8Internal Revenue Service. Contact Your Local IRS Office Then call 844-545-5640. If you’re in Alaska or Hawaii, use Pacific time for the phone hours.2Internal Revenue Service. Let Us Help You

When you reach a representative, explain the specific tax matter. They’ll screen the request and may resolve it on the call or point you to an online tool if an office visit isn’t necessary. If you do need to come in, you’ll give your name, phone number, and the service you need, and the IRS will send a confirmation with your date, time, and location.

For cash payments, call 30 to 60 days before the date you want to pay.7Internal Revenue Service. Pay Your Taxes With Cash

Saturday Hours During the 2026 Filing Season

Many TACs open on select Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The 2026 dates are February 28, March 28, April 11, April 25, May 30, and June 27.9Internal Revenue Service. IRS Face-to-Face Saturday Help All routine services are available except cash payments. Not every location participates on every date, so confirm your local office on the IRS website before heading out.

Deaf or Hard of Hearing Taxpayers

If you need a sign language interpreter, the IRS will schedule you for a later date so one can be arranged. You can also book directly through TTY/TDD at 800-829-4059.9Internal Revenue Service. IRS Face-to-Face Saturday Help

What to Bring

Exact requirements depend on your reason for visiting, but some items are universal. Bring a current government-issued photo ID (driver’s license, state ID, or passport) and your Social Security card or ITIN letter. For a joint return, bring the same identification for your spouse. Have copies of any IRS notice or letter that triggered the visit, plus the tax return for the year in question.

Identity Verification Appointments

If a Letter 5071C or 6483C sent you in, the documentation is more involved. Bring the letter itself, the tax return referenced in it with all supporting documents like W-2s and 1099s, and a prior year’s tax return as well.10Taxpayer Advocate Service. Letter 5071C

For a 6483C letter, the IRS asks for two to three identity documents. At least one must be from the primary list (a government-issued photo ID showing your current name and date of birth), and at least one must show your current address. You may also need a document displaying your full Social Security number. Acceptable secondary documents include a Social Security card, birth certificate, marriage certificate, school ID with photo, voter registration card, or vehicle registration.11Internal Revenue Service. Understanding Your Letter 6483C Recent utility bills, bank statements, and medical bills work for address verification, but they can’t be older than 90 days. Your appointment confirmation email will spell out exactly which documents your case needs.

Sending a Representative

If you can’t attend yourself, an authorized representative can go, but only with the right paperwork. Form 2848 (Power of Attorney and Declaration of Representative) lets a qualified individual, such as an attorney, CPA, or enrolled agent, represent you before the IRS and access your confidential tax information.12Internal Revenue Service. About Form 2848, Power of Attorney and Declaration of Representative If you only need someone to view your tax information without the authority to advocate or sign for you, Form 8821 (Tax Information Authorization) is the lighter option.13Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 8821

Language Help

If English isn’t your primary language, interpretation is available at your appointment. When a bilingual staff member is on hand, they’ll help you directly. Otherwise, the IRS uses an Over-the-Phone Interpreter service that connects a three-way call between you, the IRS employee, and a professional interpreter.14Internal Revenue Service. IRS Language Services Mention your language when you schedule so the office can prepare.

Appointment Day

Arrive early. IRS offices are federal facilities with security checkpoints, and clearing them takes time. Expect belongings to be screened, which can include opening bags or running them through an X-ray machine. Firearms, ammunition, replica weapons, explosives, pepper spray, and other dangerous items are prohibited and will get you turned away at the door.15Internal Revenue Service. 10.2.18 Physical Access Control (PAC) – Section: Prohibited Items Leave anything borderline in the car.

After security, you’ll check in with a staff member who verifies your identity and appointment. Running late? Call the appointment line as soon as you can, because arriving late may mean rescheduling. During the meeting the representative reviews your documents, works through the issue, and explains next steps, which often include something to submit or wait for by mail.

If the Visit Doesn’t Fix It

Sometimes a TAC appointment doesn’t resolve the problem. If you’ve been dealing with the IRS for more than 30 days without a fix, missed a promised response date, or are facing economic harm like a frozen refund you need for rent, the Taxpayer Advocate Service (TAS) may be able to help. TAS is an independent organization within the IRS, and it accepts cases involving financial hardship, immediate threats of adverse action like a levy or lien, and situations where IRS systems and processes have failed to resolve the problem.16Internal Revenue Service. 13.1.7 Taxpayer Advocate Service (TAS) Case Criteria

Reach TAS at 1-877-777-4778 or submit Form 911 (Request for Taxpayer Advocate Service Assistance) by mail, fax, or email.17Taxpayer Advocate Service. Contact Us A TAC representative can also refer you directly during your appointment if your issue qualifies. Once TAS accepts the case, you’ll get a dedicated advocate and should hear from them within 30 days of submitting the form.
