IRS hold times run from about three minutes on the main individual tax line to roughly 26 minutes on specialized lines like the one for setting up payment plans, and the fastest way through is an early-morning, mid-week call to the specific number that matches your issue. Many common tasks don’t need a phone call at all.
What the Wait Actually Looks Like
The IRS runs dozens of phone lines, and the wait depends heavily on which one you dial. During the 2025 filing season, the main Accounts Management lines that handle Form 1040 questions averaged a three-minute hold, with 87 percent of callers getting through to a person.1Taxpayer Advocate Service. Review of the 2025 Filing Season
Specialized lines are slower. Over the same period, callers to the Taxpayer Protection Program line (for returns flagged as possible identity theft) waited an average of 17 minutes. The Automated Collection System line averaged 22 minutes. The Installment Agreement and Balance Due line, where taxpayers try to set up payment plans, averaged 26 minutes.1Taxpayer Advocate Service. Review of the 2025 Filing Season The share of callers who actually reach a person is lower too. In fiscal year 2024, the Taxpayer Protection Program line reached only a 20 percent level of service, and the Installment Agreement line managed 48 percent.2Taxpayer Advocate Service. Season matters too. Volume peaks from January through mid-April, when waits can easily double or triple. A secondary spike hits in May and June as taxpayers respond to notices. If your question can wait until July or later, that’s when lines are shortest.
The Best Time and Day to Call
Individual (800-829-1040) and business (800-829-4933) lines are open Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. local time.3Internal Revenue Service. Let Us Help You
The single best window is the first hour after lines open, roughly 7:00 to 8:00 a.m., before the queue builds. Late afternoon thins out as callers give up or finish for the day. Callers on the West Coast get an extra advantage: at 4:00 p.m. Pacific, East Coast lines have already closed and nationwide volume has dropped.
Mondays are consistently the busiest day, and the day after any federal holiday runs the same way as pent-up demand hits. Tuesday through Thursday offers the best odds. An early call on a mid-week day is the closest thing to a shortcut the system offers.
Take the Callback if It’s Offered
When hold times run over 15 minutes, the phone system may offer a callback so you can keep your place in line without staying on hold. The option is available on most toll-free lines during business hours.3Internal Revenue Service. Let Us Help You It won’t always appear during extreme volume, but when it does, take it. One catch: if your call gets disconnected, the IRS generally will not call you back. You’ll have to start the queue over.

What to Have in Hand Before You Dial
Representatives have to verify your identity before discussing anything on your account, and a missing item can end the call.12Internal Revenue Service. Be Ready to Verify Your Identity When Calling the IRS Pull together:
- Your Social Security number or ITIN for everyone on the return.
- The filing status used on the return in question.
- A copy of that return, plus the prior-year return. Verification sometimes uses details from the earlier filing.
- Any W-2s, 1099s, or notices tied to your issue. If you got a letter, the letter ID and its date will speed things up.
- If you’re calling for someone else, a signed Form 8821 or Form 2848 already on file with the IRS.13Internal Revenue Service. About Form 2848, Power of Attorney and Declaration of Representative
Keep pen and paper next to the phone. Write down the representative’s name, their employee ID number, and any case or reference number they give you. If the call drops or you need to follow up, that record spares you from starting over.
When You Don’t Need the Phone at All
A lot of common tasks can be handled online with no hold at all. The IRS Online Account lets you see your balance, review up to five years of payment history, pull transcripts, make or schedule payments, set up payment plans, and receive digital copies of over 200 types of IRS notices. You can also approve or manage power of attorney and tax information authorization requests through it.14Internal Revenue Service. IRS Individual Online Accounts – An Easy Tool for Taxpayers
For refund tracking, “Where’s My Refund?” on IRS.gov shows the same information phone representatives see. It updates within 24 hours after the IRS receives an e-filed return, or about four weeks after a paper return is mailed.5Internal Revenue Service. If your issue is too complex for the phone, local Taxpayer Assistance Centers offer in-person appointments. Call 844-545-5640 to schedule. Once you have a slot, you get dedicated time rather than competing with the general queue.16Internal Revenue Service. Contact Your Local IRS Office
When to Escalate to the Taxpayer Advocate Service
If your issue has gone more than 30 days without resolution, or you’re facing financial hardship because of an IRS action or delay, the Taxpayer Advocate Service is a separate organization within the IRS that can step in. It can help when normal channels have failed, when representation costs are mounting, or when the IRS hasn’t followed through on a promised resolution date.17Internal Revenue Service. One Warning Before You Search for a Number
The IRS will not leave a pre-recorded voicemail threatening arrest, demand payment by gift card or prepaid debit card, or call you out of the blue about a tax debt without first sending a written notice.18Internal Revenue Service.
