IRS Has the Wrong Birthdate: Fix It Through SSA and IRS

If the IRS has the wrong birthdate on file for you, the fix depends on where the bad data actually lives: correct it at the Social Security Administration if the SSA record is wrong, or go directly to the IRS if only its record is off. The mismatch is what causes your e-filed return to bounce back with rejection code IND-525, and the return won’t process until the underlying data lines up.1Internal Revenue Service. F1040-525-04 It’s fixable, but you’ll need identity documents and some patience while the agencies sync.

Find Out Which Agency Has the Wrong Record

The IRS sources its birthdate data from the SSA. That means if the SSA record is wrong, the IRS record will be wrong too, and correcting only the IRS side would get overwritten the next time the agencies sync. Diagnose before you act.

Log into your My Social Security account at ssa.gov and check the date of birth on file.2Social Security Administration. my Social Security Two possibilities:

  • If the SSA record shows the wrong birthdate, fix it at the SSA first. The IRS won’t override SSA data.
  • If the SSA record is correct but your return still gets rejected, the error is isolated to the IRS. Skip to the IRS steps.

Correct Your Birthdate With the SSA

The SSA handles a birthdate correction as part of issuing a replacement Social Security card.3Social Security Administration. Correct Date of Birth You can start online at ssa.gov, which will walk you through questions and route you to the right submission method. You can also call the SSA or walk into a local Social Security office.

Bring a government-issued document showing your correct birthdate, such as a birth certificate or passport. After the SSA updates its record, the replacement card typically arrives in 5 to 10 business days.3Social Security Administration. Correct Date of Birth

Once the SSA has made the correction, don’t call the IRS the next day. Give the update at least four to six weeks to transfer between agencies before you try to e-file again or ask the IRS to change anything. Move too soon and the IRS system will still be holding the old data.

Correct Your Birthdate With the IRS

If the SSA record is correct and only the IRS has the wrong date, you have three ways to request the fix.

Call the IRS

Call the individual assistance line at 800-829-1040, open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. local time, Monday through Friday.4Internal Revenue Service. Let Us Help You Before you dial, have your Social Security number ready, the incorrect birthdate the system is showing, your correct birthdate, and a copy of last year’s return for identity verification. The representative may start the correction on the call or may ask you to follow up with documentation by mail.

Visit a Taxpayer Assistance Center

An in-person visit tends to be the most effective route because the IRS employee can review your original documents on the spot. TACs run by appointment only. Call 844-545-5640 to schedule.5USAGov. Contact the IRS for Questions About Your Tax Return Bring your original birth certificate, passport, or state-issued ID.

Send a Written Request by Mail

Mail a letter to the IRS service center that processed your most recent return. Include your full name, Social Security number, current mailing address, and correct date of birth. Explain briefly that the birthdate on file is incorrect and that you’re asking for a correction. Attach clear photocopies of your supporting documents. Never send originals. The mailing address for your service center is in the instructions for the most recent Form 1040 you filed. Send it certified so you have proof of delivery.

Whichever route you choose, expect roughly four to six weeks for the change to fully update in IRS systems.

Documents You’ll Need

Both the SSA and the IRS need at least one government-issued document showing your correct date of birth. The commonly accepted ones:

  • A certified birth certificate from a state or local vital records office. The strongest proof, and it doesn’t expire.
  • A current, unexpired U.S. passport.
  • A current state-issued driver’s license or ID card that shows your date of birth.

At a TAC, bring originals. For a mailed request, send photocopies only.

If you file with an ITIN rather than a Social Security number, the documentation rules are stricter. A valid passport is the only single document that establishes both identity and foreign status; without one, you’ll need two supporting documents and at least one must include your photo.6Internal Revenue Service. Protecting Your Return While the Correction Is Pending

If your e-filed return was just rejected and the filing deadline is close, don’t wait for the correction to process. You have two ways to stay on the right side of the deadline.

File a paper return right away. Attach a short note explaining that your electronic return was rejected due to a birthdate mismatch and that a correction is in progress. Paper returns take longer to process, but the IRS treats a return as timely as long as it’s postmarked by the deadline.7Internal Revenue Service. About Refunds

Or file Form 4868 for an automatic six-month extension, moving your filing deadline to October 15. The extension covers filing, not paying. If you expect to owe, estimate and pay by the original April deadline to avoid interest and late-payment penalties.8Internal Revenue Service. Get an Extension to File Your Tax Return

After four to six weeks, try e-filing again. If it goes through, the correction worked. If it’s rejected a second time, call the IRS to check the status of the update.

When a Wrong Birthdate Could Mean Identity Theft

Most birthdate errors are ordinary data entry mistakes. But if the IRS suddenly has a different birthdate than it did last year, or you’re seeing other unusual activity, consider whether someone may have filed under your Social Security number using different personal details. Other warning signs: IRS notices about income you didn’t earn, a tax transcript you didn’t request, or being told a return has already been filed under your SSN.

If identity theft looks possible, file Form 14039, the Identity Theft Affidavit. You can complete it online and then mail or fax it, or submit it through the Federal Trade Commission’s website, which forwards it to the IRS electronically.9Internal Revenue Service. When to File an Identity Theft Affidavit Once the IRS confirms you’re a victim, they’ll typically flag your account and issue you an Identity Protection PIN each year.

Even without confirmed identity theft, any taxpayer can request an IP PIN voluntarily through their IRS Online Account.10Internal Revenue Service. Get an Identity Protection PIN It’s worth doing after a birthdate correction, since future returns will then be verified by a number that’s separate from the personal data that was already wrong once.

If the Correction Stalls

Birthdate corrections sometimes disappear into administrative limbo. If more than 30 days pass without resolution, or the delay is causing real financial harm, the Taxpayer Advocate Service can step in. TAS is an independent organization inside the IRS that helps taxpayers resolve problems normal channels haven’t fixed. Submit Form 911 or file a request through the TAS website.11Taxpayer Advocate Service. Can TAS Help Me With My Tax Issue

TAS prioritizes cases involving financial hardship, imminent negative IRS action, or situations where the agency has failed to respond within its own timeframes. A birthdate error holding up your refund for months, blocking a payment plan, or generating incorrect penalty notices all fit that description.
