IRS Form 8453: Attachments, Mailing, and Common Mistakes

IRS Form 8453 is the transmittal cover sheet you mail after e-filing your Form 1040 when a specific paper document has to reach the IRS separately. Most e-filed returns never need it. When they do, you have three business days after the IRS accepts your return to get the envelope in the mail, and it goes to a single address in Austin, Texas no matter where you live.1Internal Revenue Service. When You Need to Send Form 8453

The form only exists to carry a short, fixed list of documents the IRS cannot accept electronically. If one of those documents belongs with your return, check the corresponding box on Form 8453, mail it in, and your e-filed return stays intact. If the document you need to submit is not on that list, Form 8453 will not help you and you generally cannot e-file at all; the return has to go on paper.1Internal Revenue Service. There is also a way to skip the paper entirely. Some tax software can attach PDFs of the required documents directly to your electronic return through the IRS Modernized e-File system. When that option is available and you use it, no Form 8453 is needed.2Internal Revenue Service. Do not send W-2s, W-2Gs, or 1099-Rs with Form 8453. Those were already transmitted with your return. Paper copies create extra handling and can slow processing.3Internal Revenue Service. About Form 8453 A copy of your 1040 does not belong in the envelope either.

Documents You Can Attach

Each allowed document has its own checkbox on the form. Only these may be sent with Form 8453:1Internal Revenue Service. Form 8453 – U.S. Individual Income Tax Transmittal for an IRS e-file Return

How to Fill Out the Form

Enter your name, address, and Social Security Number exactly as they appear on your e-filed Form 1040. On a joint return, list both names and SSNs in the same order. If the identifying information does not match the electronic return, the IRS may not be able to link the paper attachments to it.3Internal Revenue Service. About Form 8453

Electronic Return Originators enter their EFIN in the designated field. If you are filing through an online provider on your own, that field may not apply to you.

Check every box for a document you are enclosing, print the form, and place it on top of the attachments as the cover page. Do not sign it. The form itself prints “DON’T SIGN THIS FORM” in bold.1Internal Revenue Service. Where to Mail It and When

Every Form 8453 goes to the same address:7Internal Revenue Service. Where to File – Forms Beginning With the Number 8

Internal Revenue Service
Attn: Shipping and Receiving, 0254
Receipt and Control Branch
Austin, TX 73344-0254

The IRS does not publish a separate address for taxpayers abroad. Austin is the address given for this form.

The package has to be mailed within three business days after the IRS acceptance acknowledgment for your e-filed return. If you filed through an online provider, that same clock starts when your transmitter confirms acceptance. No acknowledgment? Contact your provider or transmitter directly.1Internal Revenue Service. Three business days is tight. Have the paper documents ready before you e-file. If you know Form 8332 or Form 8283 needs to go in, print the form, gather the supporting appraisals or signed releases, and address the envelope the same day you transmit.

Payments do not go in this envelope. If you owe, mail your payment separately with Form 1040-V by April 15, 2026, or pay electronically. The IRS recommends electronic payment when possible.1Internal Revenue Service. Form 8453 – U.S. Individual Income Tax Transmittal for an IRS e-file Return

Form 8453 vs. Form 8879

These two get mixed up constantly. Form 8879 is the signature authorization. You sign it to let your preparer transmit the return electronically, and you sign it before the return is filed.8Internal Revenue Service. About Form 8879, IRS e-file Signature Authorization

Form 8453 is a cover sheet. It carries no signature and only exists to route paper attachments to your already-filed electronic return. If your return needs no paper attachments, you may never touch Form 8453 at all.

Mistakes That Delay Processing

Signing the form is the most common one. People sign anything addressed to the IRS by reflex; on Form 8453 that reflex causes confusion.

Including W-2s or 1099-Rs is the next most common. Those were already sent electronically. Paper duplicates create extra work at the IRS end.

Attaching something that is not on the checkbox list also fails. If the IRS wants a document and it does not appear as an option on Form 8453, the form cannot carry it, and the return generally has to be filed on paper instead.1Internal Revenue Service. Other Versions for Non-1040 Returns

The Form 8453 described above is for individual returns only. The IRS uses separate variants for other return types. Form 8453-FE, for instance, is used by estates and trusts filing Form 1041 electronically and does more than transmit paper: it authenticates the electronic return and can authorize electronic funds withdrawal for tax payments.9Internal Revenue Service. About Form 8453-FE, U.S. Estate or Trust Declaration for an IRS e-file Return If you are filing a business, partnership, or estate return, use the variant that matches.
