IRS Form 4868: How to File, Deadlines, and Penalties

IRS Form 4868 gives individual taxpayers an automatic six-month extension to file a federal income tax return, moving the deadline from April 15 to October 15. The word that matters is “file.” The form does nothing about payment. Any tax you owe is still due on the original April deadline, and interest starts running the next day on whatever you haven’t paid.

What the Form Covers

The full name is “Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return.” It applies to the entire 1040 family, including the 1040-SR for taxpayers 65 and older and the 1040-NR for nonresident aliens.1Internal Revenue Service. About Form 4868, Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return Any individual can use it, regardless of income or filing status.

“Automatic” is literal. You don’t give a reason, and the IRS doesn’t approve or deny based on your circumstances. You file the form (or take one of the equivalent steps below) and the October 15 deadline is yours.

One side effect worth knowing: if you also owe federal gift tax, filing Form 4868 for your income tax return automatically extends your Form 709 gift tax return to October 15 as well.2Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 709 (2025) Nothing extra to submit.

How to File It

You have several ways to get the extension, and one of them doesn’t involve the form itself.

Pay and Get the Extension in One Step

If you make a payment through IRS Direct Pay, EFTPS, or a credit or debit card and mark it as an extension payment, the IRS treats that payment as your extension request. No separate Form 4868 is needed.3Internal Revenue Service. IRS Reminds Taxpayers an Extension to File Is Not an Extension to Pay Taxes On Direct Pay, select “Extension” as the payment type and “Form 4868” as the form so the payment is linked correctly.4Internal Revenue Service. Commercial Software or Paper

Most commercial tax software includes an option to e-file Form 4868. If you’d rather mail it, download the form from IRS.gov, complete it, and send it with a postmark no later than April 15.1Internal Revenue Service. What You Put on the Form

The form is short. You provide your name, address, and Social Security number. Joint filers also add the spouse’s name and SSN. A name-and-SSN mismatch against IRS records is the most common reason for rejection, so check both against your Social Security card.

The substantive line is your estimated total tax liability for the year (line 4). Use whatever you have to make a reasonable good-faith calculation: W-2s, 1099s, records of estimated payments. Enter what you’ve already paid through withholding and estimated payments on line 5, and the difference is your balance due on line 6.

The estimate matters. The Form 4868 instructions warn that if the IRS later finds your estimate wasn’t reasonable, the extension can be declared void.6IRS.gov. Application for Automatic Extension of Time To File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return A voided extension is treated as if you never filed one, which drops you into the much steeper failure-to-file penalty. You don’t have to be exact. You can’t lowball to duck a payment either.

What Happens After You Submit

Usually, nothing. The extension is automatic, so the IRS doesn’t send an approval notice. You’ll only hear back if the form is rejected, typically because of a name or SSN mismatch.1Internal Revenue Service. About Form 4868, Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return If you e-filed, expect an electronic acceptance or rejection within 24 to 48 hours. Look at that confirmation rather than assume it went through. A rejection for a data-entry problem can usually be corrected and resubmitted before the deadline.

Penalties and Interest If You Owe

This is where the “extension to file, not to pay” rule shows its teeth. Form 4868 protects you from the failure-to-file penalty. It does not touch the failure-to-pay penalty or interest. Both of those start on April 16 if you have a balance.

Failure-to-File Penalty

Without a valid extension, filing late costs 5% of the unpaid tax for each month or partial month the return is overdue, capped at 25%.7Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 U.S. Code 6651 – Failure to File Tax Return or to Pay Tax If the return is more than 60 days late, the minimum penalty is the lesser of $525 or 100% of the unpaid tax.8Internal Revenue Service. Failure to File Penalty A valid Form 4868, followed by filing by October 15, eliminates this penalty entirely. That alone makes the form worth filing even if you can’t send a dollar with it.

Failure-to-Pay Penalty

The failure-to-pay penalty is 0.5% of unpaid tax per month, also capped at 25%.7Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 U.S. Code 6651 – Failure to File Tax Return or to Pay Tax Form 4868 doesn’t stop it. You can avoid it, though, if you meet two conditions: pay at least 90% of your total tax by April 15 through withholding, estimated payments, or a payment sent with Form 4868, and pay the rest when you file.6IRS.gov. Application for Automatic Extension of Time To File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return Miss the 90% mark and the 0.5% monthly charge begins on April 15.

Interest

Interest on unpaid tax accrues at the federal short-term rate plus 3 percentage points, compounded daily.9Internal Revenue Service. Quarterly Interest Rates Unlike penalties, interest can’t be waived or abated for reasonable cause. It’s statutory.10Internal Revenue Service. 20.2.5 Interest on Underpayments Sending even a partial payment with your extension request reduces both interest and the failure-to-pay penalty, because both are calculated on the unpaid balance.

If You Miss the October 15 Deadline

File Form 4868 and then blow past October 15, and the protection is gone. The failure-to-file penalty kicks in as of October 16 at 5% per month on the balance you still owe.7Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 U.S. Code 6651 – Failure to File Tax Return or to Pay Tax Both major penalties then run at once.

Extensions You Get Without Filing Form 4868

Some taxpayers get extra time automatically, no form required.

Combat Zone Service

Members of the U.S. Armed Forces serving in a combat zone, along with qualifying support personnel like Red Cross workers and certain civilians, have filing and payment deadlines postponed for their entire time in the zone plus 180 days after they leave. Hospitalization outside the U.S. for combat zone injuries adds to the extension. Hospitalization inside the U.S. for such injuries can extend the deadline by up to five years. In most cases the service member’s spouse gets the same extended deadlines.11Internal Revenue Service. Extension of Deadlines — Combat Zone Service

Federally Declared Disaster Areas

When the IRS grants disaster relief, affected taxpayers get automatic postponements for filing, payment, and other time-sensitive actions. The IRS identifies taxpayers in the covered area and applies the relief without any call or filing on your part.12Internal Revenue Service. U.S. Citizens and Residents Abroad

If your tax home and main place of residence are both outside the United States and Puerto Rico on April 15, you get an automatic two-month extension to June 15 without filing Form 4868. Interest still runs from April 15 on any balance. If you need more time past June 15, file Form 4868 to extend to October 15.1Internal Revenue Service. Your State Return Is a Separate Question

A federal extension does not automatically cover your state income tax return everywhere. Some states accept a copy of your federal Form 4868 as a valid state extension. Others require a separate state form. State payment deadlines and late-payment penalty rates also vary. If your state has an income tax, check your state tax agency’s rules before assuming the federal extension covers you on both sides.
