IRS Form 4506 is the request you file to get an exact photocopy of a federal tax return you already submitted, including every schedule, W-2, and attachment. Each year costs $30, payment goes to the United States Treasury by check or money order, and the IRS keeps returns available for the current tax year plus seven prior years.1Internal Revenue Service. Form 4506 – Request for Copy of Tax Return Before you mail anything, though, check whether a free transcript will do the job. Most people who reach for this form don’t actually need it.
Try a Free Transcript First
A transcript is a line-by-line summary the IRS generates from its own records. It shows most of the same data as your original return, including adjusted gross income, taxable income, and payment history, but it doesn’t look like your filed 1040 and won’t include attachments.2Internal Revenue Service. About Form 4506-T, Request for Transcript of Tax Return Mortgage lenders, student loan servicers, and most government agencies accept transcripts.
You can view, download, and print transcripts instantly through your Individual Online Account at irs.gov.3Internal Revenue Service. When You Actually Need the Full Copy
Reach for Form 4506 when someone specifically requires the original formatting of your return, when you need the actual W-2 attachments from a year the IRS no longer holds wage records for, or when you’re in litigation that demands certified reproductions. If nobody has told you a transcript won’t work, ask before spending the money.
Don’t Confuse 4506 with 4506-T or 4506-C
Three similar forms trip people up constantly. Form 4506 gets you the paid photocopy. Form 4506-T gets you the free transcript.5Internal Revenue Service. About Form 4506, Request for Copy of Tax Return Form 4506-C is what mortgage lenders and other authorized participants in the IRS Income Verification Express Service (IVES) use to pull your transcript directly during a loan application.6Internal Revenue Service. Income Verification Express Service If a lender handed you a 4506-C, you’re not requesting anything for yourself. You’re giving them permission to verify your income with the IRS, and they handle the submission.
What to Put on the Form
The IRS matches every detail on your request against its master file, and small errors get requests kicked back. Have these ready:
- Your full name exactly as it appeared on the original return. If your name has changed since, the form asks for both.
- Your Social Security Number, or your Employer Identification Number for a business return. For joint returns, include both spouses’ names and SSNs.1Internal Revenue Service. Form 4506 – Request for Copy of Tax Return
- The address that was on the original return, not necessarily your current address. If it’s changed, enter both.
- The type of return you filed, such as 1040, 1120, 1065, or 941. Requesting the wrong form type causes an automatic rejection.
- Each tax year you need. The $30 fee applies separately to each one.
For joint returns, only one spouse needs to sign, though including both signatures can prevent complications if the IRS has questions.1Internal Revenue Service. Form 4506 – Request for Copy of Tax Return
Why Requests Get Rejected
The IRS scans these forms with optical character recognition, which makes them unforgiving about formatting. Common reasons for rejection: the name or SSN doesn’t match IRS records exactly, the address doesn’t match what was on the original return, a signature strays outside its box, or the payment doesn’t cover every year requested. Type or print clearly and double-check every number.
Fee and Payment
The IRS charges $30 for each tax year you request. Three years of returns costs $90. Full payment must accompany the form or the IRS rejects it outright.
Pay by check or money order made out to “United States Treasury.” Cash is not accepted. Write your SSN (or EIN for a business) and “Form 4506 request” on the check so the payment lands on the right account.1Internal Revenue Service. Where to Mail It
Individual returns go to one of three RAIVS Team locations based on the state where you lived when you filed the return in question:7Internal Revenue Service. Where to File Addresses for Filing Form 4506
- Austin, TX 73301 (Stop 6716 AUSC) for Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, foreign countries, and U.S. territories.
- Ogden, UT 84409 (P.O. Box 9941, Mail Stop 6734) for Connecticut, Delaware, D.C., Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.
- Kansas City, MO 64999 (Stop 6705 S2) for Alaska, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Kansas, Michigan, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, North Dakota, Ohio, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming.
Business returns follow a separate address chart. Check the current addresses on the IRS website before mailing, because the addresses printed on the form itself sometimes lag behind updates online. If you’re requesting multiple years and the chart shows different addresses, send everything to the address that matches your most recent return.
How Long It Takes
Full copies take considerably longer than transcripts. The IRS pulls them from archival storage, verifies authorization, and assembles the complete package with all attachments. Plan for up to 75 calendar days from the date the IRS receives your request. Peak filing season or high request volume stretches that further.
To check status, call the IRS at 1-800-908-9946, the dedicated line for tax record requests.1Internal Revenue Service. Form 4506 – Request for Copy of Tax Return Keep a record of when you mailed the form so you have a reference point.
How Far Back You Can Go
The IRS keeps copies of returns available for the current tax year plus seven prior years.8Internal Revenue Service. Taxpayers Can Request a Copy of Previous Tax Returns Anything older is generally no longer retrievable through this form. A transcript may still exist for certain older years, but a full photocopy likely does not. If you think you might need original copies down the road, keep your own rather than counting on the IRS to hold them indefinitely.
Requesting a Deceased Person’s Return
Executors, estate administrators, and personal representatives can use Form 4506 to request a deceased person’s return, with additional documentation:9Internal Revenue Service. Request Deceased Person’s Information
- The deceased person’s full name, last known address, and Social Security Number.
- A copy of the death certificate.
- Either court-approved Letters Testamentary (sometimes called Letters of Administration) or IRS Form 56 (Notice Concerning Fiduciary Relationship) with a copy of the court letters attached.
The same $30-per-year fee applies. If a transcript would settle the estate matter you’re working on, filing Form 4506-T with the same supporting documents is free and faster.
